The keel was laid on 11 October 1954, and launching 20 J 1956 After commissioning on 20 August 1956 she steamed to Galveston, Texas, on a goodwill cruise and then on to Norfolk, was on anuary . Virginia, to be loaded and outfitted. ALAMO arrived in San Diego on 13 October 1956 and joined the amphibious force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and began a series of deployments to the Far East. On her first Western Pacific cruise in 1957, ALAMO participated in the Bikini atomic tests before proceeding to Yokohama, Japan. During her fifth deployment to the Western Pacific beginning in October 1962, ALAMO was diverted to Guam with emergency relief supplies for the inhabitants of that typhoon-stricken Island. Later that year she provided emergency relief for victims on the flooded Island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The spring of 1964 again found her on a relief mission, this time to the earthquake-ravaged Kodiak, Alaska. In June she departed on her sixth WESTPAC deployment, stopping en route at Hawaii to participate in Fleet Exercises. Her tour of duty with the Amphibious Ready Group that year earned ALAMO her first medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Vietnam Operations. After participating in Fleet Exercises off the West Coast in 1965, ALAMO was called upon to make two special trips to WESTPAC, thus living up to her motto: "WE DELIVER ANYTHING-ANYTIME-ANYWHERE." In November 1967 after completing various lifts between Guam, the Philippines and Danang, R.V.N., ALAMO rejoined the Amphibious f th 7 t f d t O eratin within sight of the Demilitarized Zone throughout most of her seven-month tour with Amphibious Ready Group or ano er our o u y. p g Ready Group ALFA, ALAMO participated in four amphibious operations and gave needed support to the Allied forces struggling against the increasing enemy action. In addition, as part of the U.S. Disaster Assistance Force in the Philippines during heavy rains and flooding, ALAMO recovered a downed CH-53 Sea Stallion Helicopter. The ALAMO completed her 71f2-month deployment on 8 November 1972. D rin ALAMO's six-month WESTPAC Deployment in 1974 she participated in Kangaroo I, a joint allied exercise off the coast of Australia. U g Returning to the the States ALAMO underwent overhaul, November 1974-June 1975. Refresher Training consumed the next three months and the ALAMO again deployed to WESTPAC in October, returning to San Diego in May 1976. ALAMO'S present deployment, her eighth began on 29 March 1977. The A AM I Mission San Antonio De Valero In 1718 by the authority of Spain's Viceroy of Mexico, Father Antonio de Olivares established the Mission San Antonio de Valero in San Antonio. The cornerstone of the chapel known today as the Alamo was laid in 1744. Named in honor of St. Anthony de Padua and the Marques de Valero, Spanish viceroy, the mission was founded for the purpose of Christianizing and educating the Indians. The four acre mission establishment included stone living and teaching quarters for the converted Indians, and a two-story building for the monks. The various buildings were situated around a verdant, irrigated plaza and enclosed by the thick quadrangle wall. The mission's activities eventually ceased and it was abandoned in 1793 and the Mission archives were removed to San Fernando Parish Church in San Antonio. It was before Mexico's revolution rom pa 1 buildings as barracks. Thus was probably derived the name "ALAMO". - The Alamo defenders held the garrison through 13 days of siege. Subsequently, the Alamo was used as a Commissary by the United States Government, and as a Confederate quartermaster depot during the Civil War. Care of the sacred shrine finally was given by the State of Texas to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, who are the present custodians. f S n'sh rule that a company of Spanish soldiers from Alamo del Parras in Mexcio, used the mission A LIFE i 1 1 1 'lm' ' l we ' 'Snr ,ip ':.
