John David Meyer
Elba Briggs Shepard
IN MEMCRIAM
Like a poem or a prayer, the influence of loved ones lingers. The
death of our friends and classmates, Elba Briggs Shepard and John
David Meyer, saddens us. To give up someone that we love dearly is a
'task to which we are not yet adjusted. We can only say that their
memory is as bright as their individual personalities were- glowing
and unforgettable. Our only comfort was, and still is, that we were able
to call these two boys our close companions. To honor them is beyond
our power, but to pay tribute to their memory is our endeavor.

Summary For The I952-53 Football Season
The Alamo Heights Mules opened the 1952 football season with the Tech Buffs. Although the Mules, play
often looked superior to the Buffs, they came out the losers, 7-6.
The Lockhart Lions scored on a long pass on the last play of the first half in their game with Heights, in
Lockhart. Aside from this one play, the Mules soundly out-played the Lions, the game ended in a 6-6 deadlock.
The Mules found themselves in their third game and ran over the hapless Lanier Voks, 36-6. Rodney Rhodes
solved our extra point problem, found in the previous games, by booting four out of five.
Alamo Heights scored two touchdowns in the first half and held on for a 12-6 victory over Burbank. David
Rochelle took over the district scoring lead as the Mules won their second straight league outing.
In the next game, with Victoria, Rochelle scored two touchdowns as the Mules came from behind three times to
win, 25-19.
The sixth game of the season found the Mules battling the Seguin Matadors on a muddy field. Because
neither team succeeded in reaching pay dirt, the final score was 0-0.
On the Halloween night the Mules were jinxed by the Tivy Antlers in Kerrville. After a Tivy score on the
second half kick-off, the Mules roared back in championship fashion to tie the game. All this was wasted when the
Antlers scored on a 64 yard pass play in the last seven seconds to win, 14--7.
The Mules held the New Braunfels Unicorns to a 7-7 deadlock at the half, but The powerful Unicorn running
game finally wore down the fighting Mules in the last quarter and they handed Heights their second straight defeat,
27-13.
The clitmpionship bound Edison Bears put the stopper on the Mules offensive attack and ran up four touch-
downs of their own as Heights dropped its next to the last game, 28-0. The Bears allowed the Mules to get across
the midfield stripe only once as they took no chances with the dangerous Heightsters.
After holding their own with Harlandale through three quarters, the Mules' defense fell apart in the final canto
and the Indians ran up three touchdowns. The Mules played a great game against the highly favored Redskins and
the score was 12-12 at the end of the third quarter, but Harlandale eventually came out on top, 30-12.

The Season in Review
The Alamo Heights Mules started their 1952-53 basketball rally in fine style with a hard fought victory over
the Tech Buffaloes on December 2. The Mules fell before the more experienced Jefferson Mustangs in their
second game, 46-43.
In the South San Antonio Invitational Tournament, Alamo Heights was impressive in defeating South San,
Pleasanton, Central Catholic, and Harlandale in that order before bowing in the finals to San Antonio Tech.
The defending state champions played their first district games the following week and split two tilts. They
lost their first game to Kerrville and defeated New Braunfels.
The Mules were the only Class AAA team to reach the semi-finals in the San Antonio Invitational Tournament.
They defeated Kingsville and Lanier before bowing to Austin, a team that later reached the State Finals.
Alamo Heights won their next games in district 7-AAA from Victoria, Seguin, Burbank, and Lanier before
losing to Edison, 37-34. They finished the first half of their season with a victory over Harlandale.
In the second half, the Mules lost to only Harlandale and Kerrville, as they finished the district race in third
place with a record of twelve wins and four losses.
The Heights season's record was 20 wins and only 8 losses, a very successful season.
