FOREWORD
Music is a language that knows no boundaries. It is a part of
eoery life. To the Greeks it was a form of education. To us it
means much more. In our. school song, "Blue and Goldf, it
typifies the spirit of Alamo Heights. YVe hope that in years to
come it will bring back memories of pleasant times and old
acquaintances such as are recorded within these pages. The
staff, therefore, feels that it is fitting to have chosen our school
song, "Blue and Gold," as the theme of the 1950 Olmos.

just as familiar songs are remembered through the years as "old standbysf' so the gradu-
ating class of Alamo Heights High School will be remembered by all as the standbys of the
student body throughout each year of their high school career.
The class of 1950 has been an enthusiastic and diligent group, which has commanded the
respect and admiration of our community and our city. Their reputation as dependable and
reliable workers will entitle the members to their rightful places as citizens of our America.

In close harmony with the spirit and ideals of Alamo Heights, the junior Class has proved
by its support of all school functions and enterprising action that it is fully capable of assuming
the task of leadership in the coming year. Pride in their class has manifested itself in the
selection of Junior officers - each of whom personifies the integrity of the class. Success will
surely be the dominant chord in these young peoples lioes.

of American secondary schoolsf,
Candidates are selected on the basis of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. As only fioe

This year the Student Council at Alamo Heights has
again succeeded in performing efficiently its two major
functions, the promotion of more active student participa-
tion and the administering of school improvements.
The council was founded for the purpose of giving the
student body a voice in its own affairs and helping pre-
pare more students for our democratic way of life. The
organization is composed of two representatives from each
advisory, whose duty is to receive from the members of
their advisory suggestions concerning all problems related
to the school, and to present these problems to the council.
The burden of the group is borne by the comrnittees which
are designed to deal with those needs of the school that
come under their jurisdiction.

The Service Club aids various organizations in the school and in the community. Members are selected
by the vote of the faculty and of the club council. Such projects as buying a Braille book candy and fruit
for the Lighthouse for the Blind, furnishing Easter baskets for orphans, and observing Color Day are char-
acteristic of the work of the club.

The Stage Hands is one of the most active clubs
in school. Programs are generally original because
of the planned skits and stunts that are carried out
by the members. Participation in all types of dra-
matic art is greatly supported by this organization.
Under the sponsorship of the Stage Hands, the I un-
ior plays are presented each spring. The make-up
committee supplies all make-up for productions pre-
sented during the school year. Participants in the
State Forensic meets are usually Stage Hand mem-
bers. In other words "Stage Handsv is synonymous
with artistry and culture.

The unique plan of organization of the Latin Club, similar
to the plan of Roman government, offers opportunities to serve
and work.
The main offices are these: two consuls, who alternate as
presiding officer, a scribe, who keeps the record of the meet-
ings and attends to the correspondence of the club, a quaestor,
who looks after all financial matters and collects the club dues.
These officers, selected by popular vote, are assisted by various
other assistants appointed by the elected officers with the
sponsor acting as advisor.
The programs consist of interesting studies from Roman
history and literature, in addition to plays, music, skits, and
contests in both Latin and English.

In 1942 Mr. E. O. Arsers was secured as part-time band director. Since he assumed the direc-
torship of the band in the fall of 1943, it has won first division in state contests in concert, sight-reading,
and marching for the past six years. The band has grown in the past few years from a membership
of 28 in I 942 to a fully instrumented concert band of 75 members. The department now includes a
beginneris band of -Z I members, a junior High Band of 28 members, and the concert band. The trip
to Oklahoma City in February, where the band appeared at the invitation of the Oklahoma Music
Educatoris Association, culminated many years of effort and cooperation on the part of the Board of
Trustees, the School Administration, and the Faculty.

THE 1949 FOOTBALL SEASON IN REVIEW
In the opening game of the season the Heights eleven went down fighting against the
powerful Unicorns of New Braunfels, 33-6.
Heights played Laredo to a 13-13 tie in its second game with the Crowley to Stein-
man pass combination clicking for the touchdowns.
The opening Conference game of the season found Alamo Heights swamping Lanier
27-13, behind the brilliant running of Crowley and Zachry.
With Bobby Briggs running a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth
period Alamo Heights managed a 16-13 victory over Burbank.
Teddy Ritchey pushed over two touchdowns and Rusty Crowley rolled up 134 yards
rushing to defeat Edison 20-0.
For the first time in five years the Tech Baffoloes stampeded the stubborn Mules, who
went down before them 48-18.
Avenging their last year,s defeat by Alamo Heights, the Brackenridge Eagles flew into
the Mules and defeated them 45-0.
Being badly hampered by injuries, the once feared Mules fell before the Saint Anthony
Yellow Jackets 13-6.
Fighting valiantly, the Heights eleven fell before mighty Iefferson, the future state
champs, 51-0.
Injuries limiting the Heights squad to 21 boys, the Mules were defeated by the Harlan-
dale Indians 26-12.

The 1949-50 Alamo Heights basketball squad proved the
most fruitful team in the past few years. The Mules gallantly
won 21 out of 29 games this season. Placing fourth in the city
conference, the Heights cagers took over in 9 out of I4 district
ball games.
The Mules, win over Tech in the first district ball game in
which Tech led by I2 points at the half, the gallant loss to lef-
ferson by one point in two overtime periods, and the win by
one point over Burbank in one overtime are the highlightsof

Proclaimea' district champs, the Burros ended one of the
best seasons in their history. They lost their first game to Tech
37-42, but came back with a vengeance to take the next I3
games, finishing with a I3-I season record. jeff. gave the
heightsters the roughest tussle in a 38-37 thriller. No other team
came within I0 points of stopping the Burros. Tom O,Brien
