Smile, it’ll all be over soon. - Sarah Leslie and Chris Edwards wait for a table for dinner. Take me out to the ball game! - Mark Birkhead and Cindy Bookspan take off for a baseball game. I love it when you smile like that! - Tom McPherron sweet talks Julie Storm into going to the movies on Friday night. Julie and Tom are in their junior year at AHS. IT TAKES TWO HS and dating al- synonymous in the world of student life. In the halls, at dances, or during lunch, you were bound to find a couple in a deep conversation. But just what was the definition of a date? How was it started? What went on? From an unofficial dating poll, students at AHS often walked up to a person and asked him her out if they found that person attractive, but a minor- ity of students did pre- fer being asked over the phone. Over 50% of dates began at 7 p.m. and usually lasted until 12 a.m. or later. The type of dress was usally casual, but if dinner at a sophisticated restau- rant was on the agenda, then a nice shirt, tie, or dress would be consid- ered. What fun activities did couples usually plan on dates? About 30% of the students began their night with dinner in San Francisco, but 60% usu- ally went to the movies. ents then ing or spent the night talking and getting to know each other better. On the average, the tab for such a night ran up to $20, although some stu- dents did spend up to $40. Most couples pre- ferred single dating to double dating. ‘‘It’s more intimate,’’ re- marked Junior Trudy Shiu. However, those couples who enjoyed double dating did say that they were more fun. Almost everybody had a perfect date in mind, whether it was a person or situation. Teacher Terri Olsen’s perfect date was to go to a Cal-Stanford game where Cal would win. Sophomore Denise Miller’s perfect date was quite different. ‘“‘The perfect date would be to go out and have fun talking to that person,” she said, ‘‘and you laughed.”
