PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS ALAMEDA HIGH SCHOOL ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA Time present and time past Are both perhaps in time future, And time future contained in time past. T. S. Eliot from “Burnt Norton” Cable of Contents dvabadetration ‘5 ee las iy - “Classes . er vere _ Organizations. . — ; = + a Fite 3 Pacer Ser 5 Advertisements . .... . 196 . Alas poor Yorick ... “That’s no way to act like a tree.” Dedication A man who has a profound effect upon the history of Alameda High School — its past, present, and future — is Mr. Lloyd Sisler. Since the theme of the 1965 Acorn concerns time — past, present, and future — it is fitting that the yearbook should be dedicated to our noted drama instructor. Each year Mr. Sisler produces and directs the Senior Play, the Christmas Pageant, and the All- School Play — (The last two are innovations which he brought to AHS). The advanced drama classes annually entertain the students at assemblies. Besides being in charge of the Dramatics Department, Mr. Sisler is also a capable pianist and vocalist. Mr. Sisler was born in Fresno, California, and he is a graduate of Fresno State College. He re- ceived his Master of Speech Arts Degree from the University of Southern California. He has taught drama at Alameda High School over a period of twenty-three years — from 1939 to 1946, and from 1949 to the present time. In the three-year interval he was a drama director of the Opera Workshop at San Francisco City College, but fortunately he returned to our faculty. Throughout his career as a teacher, Mr. Sisler has been widely praised for his ability to transmit his talents to his students. He has a respect for Alameda High School, its students, its faculty and its traditions. Successful actors and actresses who were at one time under Mr. Sisler’s direction include: Bill Schacht, Rick Besoyan, Phyllis Winger, and Tom Rosqui. There are numerous former pupils of Mr. Sisler’s who return to Alameda High to see the man whom they have grown to respect and admire so very much. The 1965 Acorn Staff, in behalf of the student body, is extremely proud to dedicate this yearbook to so able and respected an individual, Mr. Lloyd Sisler. GEO. C. THOMPSON Principal of Alameda High School, 1911 RALPH W. CIOFFI Principal of Alameda High School, 1965 Administration — . Cioffi, busy at his desk. Without the able assistance of Mr. Cioffi, Dr. Snell, Mrs. Hoeksema, and Mr. Conner, the school would not be the same. This past fall, Alameda High received, with open arms, its new principal, Mr. Ralph Cioffi. The office of principal has many responsibilities; among these are attending meetings concerning the school, making an- nouncements at noon, and advising the bodies of the school on its decisions. The administration was without Mr. Cioffi for a four-month period due to his illness. During Mr. Cioffi’s absence, Dr. Snell had the added responsibility of being acting principal. He has the task of scheduling each student into his classes; he also sets up the school calendar. These tasks, along with checking the eligibility of student body candidates, are just a few of the responsibilities of Dr. Snell. If you read the Alameda Times Star, you have no doubt seen articles written by A.H.S. students. But, did you know that any article that goes into the paper is first checked by Mrs. Hoeksema? Besides this, she is also faculty advisor to the Girls’ Association, Women’s Board of Control, and the Courtesy Board. Despite these responsibilities, she always has time for a friend. This year, Mr. Conner took the newly-created office of Dean of Students. As “‘Dean’’, he not only handles the disciplinary problems, but he also advises the Men’‘s Board of Control, the Assembly Planning Committee, and the Ad Board. He also runs the student body elections and helps the officers plan the meetings. Mr. Cioffi and his three top aids run a tight ship and are always there to advise you. This year has been a most memorable experience in my more than thirty years of teaching for | have come to know the strong sense of friendship that has been traditionally associated with Alameda High School. The sparkling, sharp, buoyant, and creative students of today, backed by their fine dedicated teachers, assure us that the future of our community — and nation — will be left in strong hands. | have great faith in the ability of our youth to weigh the contributions of the past in the light of the present needs and come up with sensible solutions to future problems. May | offer my congratulations to all members of the 1965 Acorn staff for an outstanding publication and thank each person for his many hours of hard work. A special word of appreciation is due Paul Lacer and Deanna Demel, editor and copy editor, respec- tively; Jane Oliver, business manager; and Miss Judith Bristow and Miss Madge Holland, faculty advisor and business manager. Mr. Freeman and his wife have lived in Alameda for 37 years and have two children, both graduates of Alameda High. Mr. Freeman is himself a graduate of Stanford Univer- sity, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at Stanford, he played on the varsity football squad and was named All-American guard. His experience was put to good use during his many years as AHS football coach prior to becoming an industrial arts teacher. Over the years, Mr. Freeman has frequently been in charge of constructing properties for backstage. Without his assistance, many of the fine productions which we have en- joyed would not have been possible. For his years of service and assistance, the Acorn staff now joins with the school in saying, ‘“Thanks.”’ MR. CHRIS FREEMAN Good Bye aud Good Luck Also retiring this year is Dr. John Peoples, who has lived and taught in Alameda since 1933. Prior to coming to Alameda, Dr. Peoples attended Pennsylvania State College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then began his teaching career at Pennsylvania High School in Greensburg, Penn., where he taught courses in English, history and dramatics before coming to AHS. Besides teaching English and history here, Dr. Peoples found time to earn his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of California. He also was co-author of a world history textbook, Men and Nations, which is being used today at AHS. In 1962, in recognition of his achievements, the Acorn staff dedicated the yearbook to Dr. Peoples. This year’s staff joins with our predecessors in saluting Dr. Peoples for his years of service to the school. DR. Activities were numerous and all those who participated pronounced them a success. The Senior Class marched proudly into the auditorium, September 30, 1965, displaying its forest green jackets to the envy of the underclassmen. The Senior Play, ‘‘Pioneer, Go Home’’, whose managers were Teppie Harlan and Calvin Mew, was presented on November 6 and 7. The senior girls, in powder blue sweat shirts, carried on tradition by beating the Babies in the third annual Powder Puff football game on April 7, 1965. . i Senior Hat and Sock Day, May 20, a ridiculous array of headgear was displayed to the delight of all. Managed by Margie Burns and Henry Martinez, the Senior Picnic, at Castle Rock May 28, gave us a day of play away from school. eee The most entertaining Senior Meeting in years, under the direction of Laurie Grunewald and Nick Mashikian, was presented to the student body on June 10. It will surely be remembered for many years to come. That most awaited night of all, our Senior Bal!, managed by Linda Barry and Andy Santillina, came on June 11, 1965. The theme ‘Candlelight and Go!d’’, was carried out in an enchanting way. The following Sunday, the members of the class attended their Baccaulaureate service. Surely none will be able to forget the enjoyable evening, June 15, as we shared our Senior Banquet at Goodman’‘s Hall. And then came that final moment — Graduation! Commencement Exercises were held on the evening of June 17, 1965. Later that same evening, we met at Jack London Square for the last of our senior activities, the All-Night Party. As each goes his own way, may those four years of memories at Alameda High School never be forgotten. The Hornets scored in the first quarter on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Bill Schmitz to halfback Gerry Crawford. Ells came back and scored in the second half on a 53-yard breakaway run, which brought the score to 7-6 going into the 4th quarter of play. Tom Deal then smothered a blocked punt in the end-zone for a 2-point safety. The Ho rnet de- fense then held the Eagles and Alameda had their first victory of the season. The Hornets rolled over Pacifica 21-7 with the Vikings crumbling under the Alameda offense. Doug Royer and Bill Schmitz accounted for all of the Hornet scoring on a 5-yard dive by Royer, a one yard quarter- back sneak by Schimtz and a 29-yard pass touchdown from Schmitz to Royer, with Royer kicking all of the extra points. The mighty Hornet defense held the Vikings to a mere 110-yards passing and rushing in the whole game. The Hornets faced the San Leandro Pirates in the game that decided the A.C.A.L. championship. When the teams went into the dressing room at half time the score was 7-7. The Hornets scored on a 2-yard plunge by fullback Kamakau Napoleon after San Leandro went ahead on an 80-yard run. The Pirates scored the winning TD in the 3rd period on a 3-yard dive by their fullback. Alameda bounced back and defeated the Richmond u AM Oilers 19-0 in a well-executed attack. Leading the attack ae i was Doug Royer, who gained 74-yards in 16 carries — including a 12-yard TD romp and kicked one extra point. Gerry Crawford also stood out — scoring two TD's one on a 26-yard pass from Bill Schmitz. The Hornet defense kept the Oilers to 64 yards rushing and 51 yards passing. The Dons scored once on a four-yard run Alameda finished off the season at El Cerrito in a hard-tought game, winning 18-0. After a shaky first half, in which Royer scored the only TD on a five-yard run, the Hornets pulled together and scored the crowning touchdowns. Napoleon scored on the first play of the 4th period on a two-yard run, and Royer scored on a two-yard run. JIM MURPHY LARRY JANES End Guard MARTY VINLUAN TOM DEAL Tackle End Alameda then faced Berkeley in a game that saw the defense of both squads rule until the last 14 seconds, when the Hornets had the ball on the Berkeley four-yard line and Doug Royer kicked a field goal to win the game 3-0. Against thi tough defensive team, Bill Schmitz completed 9 of 17 passes for 112 yards. The Hornets played their non-league game with St. Elizabeth here. The Hornets dominated the whole game from the first Hornet offensive play, when Schmitz passed to Royer for a 68- yard TD. Schmitz threw the same pass for 65 yards and a TD on the next offensive series. Napoleon scored two TDs and gained 120 yards while Royer ran over the third TD, and picked up 58 yards. The game had added excitement with the presence of T.V. cameras from KGO TV for the tele vising of the high school ‘Game of the Week.’ The game started with Alameda kick- ing off to the Jets. The Jets were forced to punt, but roughing the kicker penalty gave the Jets renewed hope. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior girls are eligible for membership in the Girls’ Athletic Association (G.A.A.) which meets sixth period each school day. The girls are selected by the Girls’ physical education faculty on the basis of skill and citizenship. Girls in G.A.A. enjoy sports and want to become skilled in as many sports as possible. The girls are able to choose their own sport for each season from several which are offered. During the year, in addition to the sports offered in regular physical education, G.A.A. offers fencing, hockey, badminton, bowling, tumbling, archery, and modern dance. Activities of G.A.A. include sports- days and play-days with other schools and various money-raising events such as the semi-annual pencil sale. At the end of each semester, the “G.A.A. Spread”’ is held. Various awards are given throughout the year for excellence in certain sports and points are given accordingly. At the ‘Spread’, the newly elected officers are announced and the girls who have earned enough points receive the Circle ““A’’, Winged “A”, and Block “‘A”’, respectively. When a girl receives the Block ‘‘A’’, she becomes a member of the Women’s Block “A”. Ra : THE FALL 1964 G.A.A. This year, and the rest of our high school years, will live with us forever. The Acorn is a journal to preserve those experiences that we have had which are now only memories and which will be treasured remembrances of our past. Al- though one day is but a drop of water in the sea of life and one person is but a grain of sand on the great beach of humanity, each of us will think of the Acorn as a chronicle and a reminder of the days that were. Someday in the far distant future you may look upon this annual and make a wish — “Backward oh backward, go time in thy flight, Make me a teenager again just for tonight’. “Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past. If all time is eternally present All time is unredeemable”.—T. S.
