MR. BRYAN’S The Alameda High School had its beginning in the year eighteen hundred seventy-four, in a small room over a store on the southwest corner of Park Street and Santa Clara Avenue. In its seventy-one years of service to the young people of Alameda it has developed certain ideals and aims for which it stands and for which it ever strives. It is my purpose, in this short mes- sage, to recall to you some of those ideals and aims. The Alameda High School aims to reaffirm constantly the basic prin- ciples of true Americanism as set forth in our nation’s basic documents. It believes that it is the duty of every student of the school to know and live the American’s Creed: “T believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable, established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Consti- tution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.” [6]

PARKER ARTHUR LOMBA MINORU NAKAYAMA RICHARD MONTELL FREDERICK NIELSEN Praper God of the Free, we pledge our hearts and lives today to the cause of all free mankind. Grant us victory over the tyrants who would enslave all free men and nations. Grant us faith and understanding to cherish all those who fight for freedom as if they were our brothers. Grant us brotherhood in hope and union, not only for the space of this bitter war, but for the days to come which shall and must unite all the children of earth... . Weare all of us children of earth—grant us that simple knowledge. If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hunger, we hunger. If their freedom is taken away, our freedom is not secure. Grant us a common faith that men shall know bread and peace, that he shall know justice and righteousness, freedom and security, an equal chance to do his best, not only in our lands, but throughout the world. And in the faith let us march toward the clean world our hands can make. Amen. STEPHEN VINCENT BENET

MESSAGE The school strives to build a democratic friendly spirit which bestows admiration on individual accomplishment, and creates friendliness and interest on the part of both students and faculty. Through the student body government, class activities, and clubs it aims to develop the ability to work with others in a democratic way and to develop the social side of the student’s nature. The school stands for high scholarship so that the students may be better prepared for the life that will follow graduation. It believes that strenuous work is a very definite preparation for that life. The school stands for the essence of good sportsmanship as revealed in the ability both to greet victory with enthusiasm and to accept defeat with grace. It aims to create school loyalty so that every student will have a pride in his school and be loyal to its ideals and traditions. In summary, Alameda High School strives to foster an environment conducive to preparation both for a living and for life. The young men of ancient Athens took an oath that they would transmit their fatherland, “not only not less, but greater and better than it was transmitted to them.” I would urge you, the students of Alameda High School, to transmit your school, not only not less, but greater and better than it was transmitted to you. The preparation and publication of a year book such as our AcoRN is a difficult and arduous task. To Mrs. Le Hew, faculty adviser, Don Ed- wards, editor, Frederick Maurer, business manager, and the Acorn Staff I extend my sincere thanks and my hearty congratulations for the splendid service they have given the school .
