Yes, no matter what the appearance of things, our generation must believe that there yet exists a grand, all-pervading pattern, inscrutable though it may seem. We have ma tured in times which are unparalleled in the history of the world—times of disturbance, of turmoil, of insecurity, and of hate. Grant us brotherhood in hope and union, not only for the space of this bitter war, but for the days to come which shall and must unite all the children of earth... . Weare all of us children of earth—grant us that simple knowledge. If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hunger, we hunger. BRYAN’S The Alameda High School had its beginning in the year eighteen hundred seventy-four, in a small room over a store on the southwest corner of Park Street and Santa Clara Avenue. In its seventy-one years of service to the young people of Alameda it has developed certain ideals and aims for which it stands and for which it ever strives. It is my purpose, in this short mes- sage, to recall to you some of those ideals and aims. The Alameda High School aims to reaffirm constantly the basic prin- ciples of true Americanism as set forth in our nation’s basic documents. It believes that it is the duty of every student of the school to know and live the American’s Creed: “T believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable, established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Consti- tution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.” [6] MESSAGE The school strives to build a democratic friendly spirit which bestows admiration on individual accomplishment, and creates friendliness and interest on the part of both students and faculty. Through the student body government, class activities, and clubs it aims to develop the ability to work with others in a democratic way and to develop the social side of the student’s nature. The school stands for high scholarship so that the students may be better prepared for the life that will follow graduation. It believes that strenuous work is a very definite preparation for that life. The school stands for the essence of good sportsmanship as revealed in the ability both to greet victory with enthusiasm and to accept defeat with grace. It aims to create school loyalty so that every student will have a pride in his school and be loyal to its ideals and traditions. In summary, Alameda High School strives to foster an environment conducive to preparation both for a living and for life. The young men of ancient Athens took an oath that they would transmit their fatherland, “not only not less, but greater and better than it was transmitted to them.” I would urge you, the students of Alameda High School, to transmit your school, not only not less, but greater and better than it was transmitted to you. The preparation and publication of a year book such as our AcoRN is a difficult and arduous task. To Mrs. Le Hew, faculty adviser, Don Ed- wards, editor, Frederick Maurer, business manager, and the Acorn Staff I extend my sincere thanks and my hearty congratulations for the splendid service they have given the school . 1. Financial Secretary Ye ll Leader JACK WEEDEN The Fall Term, 1944, is one which will be long remembered in A. S. A. H.S. history. The associated students were led by a president surpassed by none, Jack Weeden. His con- tinuous efforts for successful student meetings and his brilliant leadership guided the administration through an outstanding semester. Backing President Weeden at all times Vice President Doris Buzolich proved herself capable, efficient, and well worthy of her office. This administration boasts that for the first time in the school’s history, a recording secretary completed the term without a single correction of the minutes. Financial Secretary Dick Fetherstonhaugh added his name to the short list of ““Money men’ who have secured 100 per cent student dues. Yell Leader Bill Schacht gave sparkling enter- tainment to the meetings with his energy and school spirit. A wide variety of entertainment was offered during the term. The 53rd Infantry Band gave a fine concert; the semi-annual Student Talent program was excellent; the eminent author, Howard Pease, gave an enlightening talk on the art of writing. One other pro- gram is recalled in particular; namely, the “Chinese” Magician with a definite Brook- lyn accent. Some of the groups which promote a successful administration are the Student-Faculty Committee, the Ad Board, and the Men’s and Women’s Boards of Control. More im- portant than these, however, is the splendid codperation of a student body which under- stands that Alameda High is the finest school in the Bay Area and works to prove that fact. On behalf of my fellow officers and myself, I wish to thank one and all for the coéperation given this administration. The Vice President’s office was capably filled by Jeanne Kyriacos who gave genuine codperation to students and faculty. Recording Secre- tary Bill Wirt conscientiously fulfilled the duties of his office. Financial Secretary Ray McMullin worked hard on student cards, and was successful in adding several new Stu- dent Card rates to the list of benefits derived by members. As this goes to press, the student body is approaching the 100 per cent mark again. The students expressed their confidence in Yell Leader Bill Schacht by returning him to the office for a second term. His spirit, versatility, and excellent voice added immeasurably to the student meetings. The administration’s main objective was to secure bigger and better student meetings. This goal was attained through the efforts of the administration and the student faculty committee. Among the outstanding meetings were the singers from the Savoy Opera Company of San Francisco, the student talent program, and Jack McDermott, the master of the marimba. Thanks are hereby given to the Ad-Board, to both Men’s and Women’s Boards of Con- trol, to the Student-Faculty Committee, and to the other organizations and commitees for the kind help given us. Without their ready and willing assistance the term could not have been a success. The administration also thanks each and every member of the student body for his fine codperation. DON EDWARDS Four years is a long time; and yet, it seems no more than a few months ago that we, the members of the Class of June, 1945, trod uncertainly beneath the portals of Alameda High School. From the day of our introduction to Alameda, it was evident that our class was destined to become the greatest ever graduated. The achievement of this success was not easy. The trail was long and hard, and it was the fine leadership we had throughout these four years that made the ascent possible. A good start in financial affairs is one of the first essentials of class success in High School. We secured this essential in our Freshman term by giving two dansants, each of which helped to raise the balance in the bank. When Circus Day came in our High Fresh- man term, we were ready and our class helped in a great part to make that Circus Day one of the best ever enjoyed at Alameda. Among the many activities of our Sophomore year was the Soph Hop, “‘The Carefree Capers,” ably managed by Don Pries and Jane Formosa. We elected as our presidents in this year Howard Seymour and John Slater. Each did a fine job in his respective term of office. Then came the time revered by all lower classmen and remembered fondly by those above. Yes, we were upper classmen. Our list of activities continued with vigor, and under the very fine management of Buzz Thompson and Peggy Daley, we presented “‘The Moonlight Fantasy,” which will be remembered by all as one of the greatest Junior Proms given at Alameda High. As Circus Day appeared again, we found our chief weak- ness, that of joining with the rest of the school to have the best time ever. Our presidents this year were Ben Neff and Bob Asche. Bos ASCHE ADDISON THOMPSON We reached our peak in our Senior year, both in social and financial success. After many weeks of concentrated rehearsal under the able direction of Lloyd Sisler, the cast of “Heaven Can Wait” gave a performance which broke all records in attendance. Among the main characters were Don Pries, Pat Horrigan, Joe Kaney, Don Edwards, Rodna Walls, and Bob Campbell. In our Low Senior term we elected Don Edwards as president, and he did a fine job in getting our Senior Jackets out on the second day of our High Senior semester. The office of president in this 4B term was delegated to Buzz Thomp- son, who has made plans for a really enjoyable time to be had by all. In sports this class has been well represented. Even as a mere Sophomore Joe Kaney was high point man on the basketball team. Don Pries, Fred Terry, and Jim McQuaid were also on the Championship Team of 1943. Harry Jeffs, Ray Divine, Joe Kaney and Ducky Pries were outstanding on the baseball diamond; Bob Wilkinson, Buzz Thomp- son, Syd Hazelton, Fred Terry, Dick Cloux, Ray McMullin and Fritz Maurer in track; and on the 1945 basketball team were Lowell Jensen, Harry Jeffs, and Rodney Williams. Yes, our class has done a lot. Some of this achievement is due to the initiative on the part of the students; but, on the whole, our life through Alameda High has been guided by little praised but deserving people—the advisors—who are constantly prodding us to get things done. And so, now that we are on the last leg of our journey through a very happy and successful four years of high school, we wish to thank Mr. Bryan, Mrs. Hall, and all the members of the faculty who have given us that little shove needed for the achievement of success. A world mourns its foremost champion of freedom. The great and the humble stand hushed in their overwhelming sorrow. Armies march on to certain victory, remem- bering the vision and courage of their fallen com- mander in chief. Momentous plans take shape for translating into reality his dream of an enduring peace. The man with the golden voice and charming smile, the president who led with boldness and imag- ination, the humanitarian whose great heart em- braced the aspirations of mankind, moves to his immortal place in history. Our lives which he enriched seem empty and lonely, for he had the unique gift of intimacy and it is as though we have lost a loved one. In the farthest corners of a war torn earth his name is revered by all who cherish liberty. At a fateful hour in the story of civilized progress we pause to bow our heads in grateful memory. As Americans we are proud to have given the world so eloquent a spokes- man of its hopes for the future. Franklin Cummings. CLASS OF Officers — Fall, 1944 President . . cart eee .. DoroTHy WEDELI BILL STAGE It was with some trepidation, we must admit, that we, the class of January, 1946, first entered through the shining portals of A. H. S. We chose Wayne Jackson and Johnny Rapp as our Presidents for our Freshman year. Our main activity for this year was the Candy Booth, Circus Day. In our Sophomore year our class pep burst forth by giving the “Rain Drop Hop,” managed by Bill Stage and Jean Coughlan. Later in the term a gardenia sale was given which netted good returns. Our presidents for this year were Dick Gans and Peter Wright. Upper Classmen at last! In our 3B term we presented the great ““November Nocturne,” managed by Ed Blamire and Mary Tilly. Also in our Junior year we sponsored one of the main and largest booths on Circus Day, “Hot Dogs.” Presidents were Ronald Robin- son and Bill Stage. On the ninth of March “You Can’t Take It With You” was presented. Those who saw it will never forget the expert acting of Arline Ralston, Lu Bach, Bob Albers, Marilyn Norton, Joan Kellberg, Vic Schutzky, Tom Grunwald, Jim Goggin, Alma Dawson, JEAN FOSTER GLENN McLEAN JIM GOGGIN FEBRUARY 1946 Officers — Spring, 1945 President - Ep BLAMIR Vice President JOAN MANBERT Recording Secretary ; . rats EveLyN WHITE Financial Secretary aires 2 tts Jean COUGHLAN Yell Leader , - “este .Dave Cox Administrative Board . ‘ Jim Goccrn Administrative Board are Jean PeRaTA ED BLAMIRE Richard Lander, Ken McLaughlin, and many others. With this splendid cast and with Mr. Lloyd Sisler as director, the play was a big success. Our clear profits on this enter prise topped the $600 mark. By now many of our boys are active in sports; for example, Bill Wirt, Johnny Rapp, and Rodney Merrick in basketball, with Glenn McLean as manager; Wayne Raymond and Ed Reith in baseball; Larry Caviglio, Wayne Raymond, Bailey Clinkenbeard and Carlos Ingram in football; Ken McLaughlin, Bob Albers, and Gordon Richards in track: Jim Shiels in swimming. We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to our class advisors—Mr, Watt (chairman), Miss Barrett, Mrs. Berry, Miss Hays, Mrs. E. Herrick, and Mr. Frank Young. WARREN MUSSER As we stand at the end of our High Junior term, we able to look back on three years of hard work well done. Since our entrance into Alameda High School in September, 1942, the Class of June 46 has excelled in athletics, talent, and school activities. Our ability to work together was shown by the successful presentation of our Junior Prom, the “Magic Mood.” Under the capable management of Ed Childe and Lois Francis, the dance was acclaimed as a social success. In sports our class is outstanding. Rocky Mountain, Bill Simpson, Chuck King, Al Smith, Ed Childe, Jack Ginley, Bob Dunn, Carl Monser, Don Vander Schuur, and Glen Camper are only a few of our men who excel in the field of athletics. We wish to express our thanks to the faculty and advisors of Alameda High, who have given untiringly of their time and effort in assistance of our class activities, and without whose help we could not have done so well. At present we are looking forward to a pleas- ant and active Senior Year to conclude our four year stay at Alameda High School. DONNA MEUTER Recording Secretary PROMINENT HIGH JUNIORS MR. DON WEEDEN We, the class of February, 1947, have finally reached the day when we can proudly call ourselves “Upper Classmen.” Now we look forward to the day when we will be known as the High and Mighty Seniors. Looking back, we remember our excitement at being able to give a dance that stood out as being one of the best Soph Hops ever given. This Hop was called ‘“The Turn-About Hop,” and was very ably managed by Don Weeden and Shirley Gray. The evening was a social and financial success as many will remember. Our next successful money-making venture will be a movie which we plan to have about the first week in May. Many members of our class have been prominent in sports. Phil Thormahlen and Bob Wentz were on last season’s football team. Don Emmal and Don Weeden received their Block “A’’s for tennis. Nelson Wright was on the basketball team. Walt Jensen is very prominent in track, and Harold Hutchinson is on the baseball team. Girls going out for Block ‘“‘A”’s are Beverly Cleveland, Betty Conard, Nancy Crook Dot Hayes, Lois Kelton, and Barbara Krausse. We, the class of February, 1947, are proud of our record to date. These activities were under the management of Sid Dowling and Smith Anderson. When we were Low Sophomores, we again gave a dansant. As we came upon our High Sophomore term we proudly presented the “Hop Scotch Hop.” This was ably managed by Sid Dowling. However, after our first few weeks of razzing, and with the help of our kind upper-classmen, we began to pitch in to the school activities in earnest. The first thing we did was to elect class officers. Those elected were Terry Reed, Presi- dent; Nancy Stromberg, Vice President; Gerald Colburn, Recording Secretary; Gary Schweitzer, Financial Secretary; Jack Foster, Yell Leader; and Marilyn Closson, Ad Board. With these capable officers to back us up, we soon became 100 per cent for student body dues. At the end of the first semester we were quite self-confident. Again we elected officers and the results of this second election were: Gerald Colburn, President; Mary Sabatini, Vice President; Pat Gripon, Recording Secretary; Gary Schweitzer, Financial Secretary; and Terry Reed, Yell Leader. Again we became 100 per cent for student dues, and toward the middle of the semester we gave a very successful movie. Quite a few of our members have gone out for sports, and we see a very apt-looking varsity on the horizon. Altogether our first year in Alameda High has been a very successful one, thanks to our kind advisers, teachers, and upper classmen. The class of June, ’48 is looking toward a bright and hopeful future. There have been many occa- sions when we have feared that the Acorn could not be published. We consider ourselves indeed fortunate to be able to bring you this annual despite limitations on paper, cover material, and engraved area. The major portion of the credit for the production of the ACoRN goes to the real brains of the outfit, Mrs. LeHew, who brought order out of chaos time after time. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the members of the staff for the efficient, cooper- ative, and prompt manner in which they carried out their assignments. And finally, a great deal of credit goes to the students themselves, without whose assistance, our task would have been well-nigh impossible. Well, we have worked hard during the past few months in order to get this book to the press; yet we have enjoyed our job at the same time. A “Senior Edition” is becoming a tradition of the Oak Leaf, and we hope to make this year’s edition one of the best ever. Thanks is extended to the Editorial and Business staffs for their fine codperation. Both staffs wish to extend their gratitude to Miss Powers for her help as faculty advisor. Next year, when the call for help comes to you, don’t hesitate, get in and work to make your school paper the best possible for in this publication is reflected the spirit of Alameda High School. Under the expert direction of Mr. Lloyd Sisler, two great Senior Plays were pro- duced. During the Fall term, the Class of June 45 presented “Heaven Can Wait,” starring Don Pries, Joe Kaney, Don Edwards, Rodna Walls, Pat Horrigan, and Bob Campbell. In the Spring term, the Class of February ’46 presented the comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” with Lou Bach, Arlene Ralston, Bob Albers, Marilyn Norton, and a great cast. Under the joint direction of the Music and Drama departments, the annual Christmas Pageant and biennial operetta were produced. The Christmas Pageant, written by Mr. Sisler, presented Dave Giosso in the role of the philosophical old man, and was acclaimed as an excellent production. The popular ‘“New Moon” was presented as the operetta and was an immediate success. Starring in it were Barbara Penberthy, Bev Butler, Bill Schacht, and Rocky Mountain. es Pr ea =e ' ie 2 GIRLS’ GLEE CJ BOYS’ GLEE 7 f P — Lae e ; ‘4 €. af La oN Mo. NONCHALANT The Men Who Back Our Teams During the past four years several members of the Alameda High School coaching staff have either entered the service or have been promoted to other positions. However, each has been replaced by an equally successful coach. This year Alameda lost two more of its staff of coaches, Stan Schnepple and Homer Irwin. The present physical education department consists of Lewis Jolly, who heads the staff and coaches track; Chet Millett, who coaches baseball and football; Frank Young, who coaches swimming and “B” football; ‘‘Hank” Jones, who replaced Stan Schnepple and turned out an excellent basketball team; and R. W. Wiedman, who replaced Homer Irwin and is coach of “B” baseball. We are greatly indebted to the coaches for their whole-hearted and gracious efforts. JOHNNY Rapp VARSITY JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL... The football team of 1944 was one of the most hard hitting, high spirited teams that Alameda has ever had. This was shown by the fact that the squad took five defeats and then came back for the last game and beat one of the strongest teams in the league. Alameda was represented on the honorary all county team by Bill Nissen. Bill played exceptionally fine ball the whole season. Another player who was, however, overlooked was the very fast, hard hitting quarterback for Alameda, Hugh Williams. The Seniors not returning are Bill Nissen, Hugh Williams, Fred Terry, Dick Fether- stonehaugh, Grover Harader, Rolph Harader, Cliff Asvitt, Bob Foote, Leon Hunter, Lee Rebeneau, Allan Silva, and Bill Soares. Coach Chet Millet will have the following players to work with next year: George Lagorio, Jim Psaltis, Wayne Raymond, Phil Thormahlen, Larry Caviglia, John Brown, Glenn Camper, and Jim Marshall. The Junior Varsity had a very successful year under coaches Homer Irwin and Don Bell, and will have plenty of good material for the varsity next year. The ‘““B”s under Coach Frank Young, also had a pretty good season and will have some fine players for next term. The team as a whole worked fast and smoothly on the floor and broke the record for the most points scored in one game for this season. The most outstanding player of the team was tall Bill Wirt, who scored the most points ever to be scored by one player in one season. Under the able direction of Coach ““Hank” Jones there were three all county players named, Bill Wirt, our outstanding center, Fred Terry, a consistent forward, and Bob Dunn, an able guard. The seniors graduating are Fred Terry, Dick Gans, Harry Jeffs, Lowell Jensen and Rod Williams. Coach “Hank” Jones will have the following players returning next year: Bill Wirt, Jack Ginley, Jim Marshall, Bob Dunn, Johnny Rapp, Nelson Wright, Rodney Merrick and Ed Childe. The “B” team placed third, under Coach Jones. The team consisted of Clarence Doyle, Don Hector, Chuck King, Bill Thompson, Al Dias, Drexel Wesleder, Jim Sugru, Jim Ortner, and Jack Spires. JOHNNY Rapp VARSITY JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL... This year’s Hornet baseball team is an up and coming ball club. After losing the first few practice games, Alameda has finally found itself and has won two out of the first four A.C. A. L. games. The losses were to Richmond 2 to 1 and Hayward 10 to 1. The wins were over Berkeley 13 to 1 and Albany 8 to 3. Coach Chet Millett has formed a very strong pitching staff. This consists of Jack Stone, George Lagiorio and Bill McDonald. Jack and George are tied in the pitching league; each has lost one game. The Acorn goes to press before the league games are finished and we will not be able to give you all the scores. But Coach Chet Millett promises a fine record. The members of the team are Jack Stone, pitcher; Bill McDonald, pitcher; George Lagiorio, pitcher and catcher; Wayne Raymond, first base; Ray Ratto, second base; Al Smith, third base; Harold Hutchinson, short stop; Wally Curlett, outfield; Don Wilson, outfield; Ray Divine, outfield; Ed Childe, outfield; Will Ramos, outfield; Jim Ortner, outfield; Bill Wirt, outfield, and Jim Kerr, utility. Coach Raymond Wiedman has a lot of fine players and promises to have some on Varsity or Junior Varsity next year. Under the able supervision of fine officers, the club was very active. The C. S. F. is the highest scholastic club in the school. The requirement for life membership in our organization is four terms of membership, with one of these terms in the Senior year. Life membership entitles the student to the gold pin award and three gold seals; one for his diploma; one for office records, and one for college transcripts. Through the marvelous opportunity of scholarships, many C. S. F. life members are now attending colleges. The members sincerely hope that all students who are eligible will come and join the group. The:theme of the Fall term was Mexico. The first social meeting set the pattern when Miss Harriett Hughes gave a spirited and humorous account of her summer vacation trip to many points of interest in Mexico. The next meeting followed the same idea with the showing of a colored motion picture of some of the customs, people, and well known places of Mexico. Then the Christmas meeting, the most largely attended of the term, took the form of a Mexican Christmas party during which the breaking of the pinata was enjoyed by everyone. The Spring term has afforded pleasure to the Spanish Club members because of the talent shown by their interpretation of Spanish and Mexican music by fellow members of the club. Among those who have participated have been Lois Riley, Virginia McLain, Hazel Brewer and Malcolm Morey. At each meeting also, following the tradition of several years, the club song, “Carmen, Carmela,” has been sung by the student s present. Hoon, assisted by Staff Sergeant R. H. Huntington. On May 21, the cadets gave a brief resume of the course which they had been taught during the past year. The unit was inspected on this date by a Federal Inspector, and was judged on classes, extended and close order drill, physical training, and military courtesy and discipline. For the last five consecutive years the unit has attained the difficult title of ““Honor School.” On May 23, the Annual Competition was held. The four companies and the band com- ‘ peted against each other in the following capacities: extended and close order drill, physical training, and military courtesy and discipline. The cadets also competed indi- vidually in the drilldown, which is a test on the movements of the manual of arms. The R. O. T. C. rifle team, composed of cadets, was very active in the past year, engaging in numerous matches with other schools. There was, also, in the early part of the year, a demonstration of the R. O. T. C. course given to the members of the Parent Teachers’ Association. Following this, a street parade was given by the battalion as a part of a drive to secure homes for war workers. The classes taught in R. O. T. C. are combat principles, military organization, military sanitation and first aid, characteristics of infantry weapons, map reading, military history, and orientation, technique of rifle fire, and rifle marksmanship. The object of the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps is to train youths to be better citizens and leaders. The unit feels that this object is being carried out to its full extent. Under the leadership of Capt. Colin Devine in the fall, we sponsored a very successful dansant and held a picnic and house-party. During the spring term our biggest event is the Military Ball which was presented on May 25 under Capt. Bob Asche. Also, during this term we put on a dansant and held a picnic and house-party. We would like to thank Capt. Jackson F. Hoon, our advisor, for giving so generously of his time, and also the Battalion for the excellent support it afforded us in all our functions. C. rifle team has just concluded a very successful season. Seven of the high ten shooting members were representing the school in compe- tition for the first time. They came through very well in the Ninth Service Command Match, placing Alameda High School well up in the high third among teams from the eleven western states, and thus qualifying the team for entry in the National Inter- collegiate Match. In the latter match, all members increased their scores. and the team placed sixth among teams from the above mentioned states. Next year the seven new members will be veterans, and should do even better. A great incentive to the team has been the awarding of the small Block “A”. minor sports award, to the high ten shooting members for the season. This year the highest season total was fired by Grady White, a sophomore firing for the school for the first time. The other nine members who will receive the Block “A” award, in order of scores, are Richard Lander, Fred Berlin, Tom Collins, Don Herald, Edward Leal, Don Evers Wesley Pease, Edward Jorgensen, and Don Conant.
