My dear Youngsters Some time ago I had to haue my driver s license renewed The man so fussed me that seem ingly everything was wrong He called me an unqual ified social menace I feebled that for over twenty years I had never had any accident at all Then he deflated me nOther people must have been ve intelligent Somehow th1t snappy come back has ruffled the spirit ever since but I still chortle Now to make good use of this You know I taught at Alameda High School for more than thirty years and know Yes the other people must have been very intelligent You youngsters were better than that You were tolerant you were kind you were loyal you gave me friendship you made me feel a part of your endeavor I am enriched by it all One of the truly awful things about being old is that every now and then some trusting youth some editor of the Acorn for instance expects words of wisdom to be produced immediately A worse thing is when the oldster tries to do t I find the demand more disconcerting than to arrive at school and suddenly to discover that the teeth have been left at home on the piano No perfunc tory wisdom otherwise stuffiness is the eighth of the Seven Deadly Sins To be on the shelf is a blessed experience provided the shelf is big enough and has a bit of padding Time does not hang heavy for me There are such wonderful things to know and love so many things to be a part of amusing things to do so much goes on within and without oneself Do you remember Leonardo's great phrase which you will find often in his notebooks HA great love is the daughter of 1 great knowledgeu? In other words the more one knows about anything or everything the greater the love and joy in it I think at times younger people make a mistake by thinking that they must like something MR.CHlPS SMCKES 1 : .
