At no time since the spring of 1935 when Alameda s CSIM chapter acted
as hosts of the Bay Section convention, has the honor society been so busy
as this year. This time Chapter 240 has had the honor of being hosts to all
the chapters of San oaquin Valley Salinas Valley and the Bay Region for
the annual Students Conference of Central California. The ex ent al-
though scheduled for Alameda High School, was changed to Treasure Is-
land by popular demand from other schools. Bob Hayes, our state chair-
man, very ably planned and organized several committees for the purpose

The German Club meets every other week in the German room. Dues
are very small in comparison to the activities the club affords. This past year
under the able leadership of our presidents, Barbara Padel and -lerome liab-
cock, we have planned and held a sale of football emblems, .1 Cfhristmas
party, a skating party and an excursion to the lfxposition.
Our emblems were the yellow and white hornet pom-poms which were
very popular. The Christmas party was held in the cafeteria with refresh-
ments and presents. The skating party and the trip to the Fair were very
successful.
Next year we hope to have even more activities.

The members of the Spanish Club Wish to take this opportunity to ex-
press their thanks to the ofhcers for their efforts in making the meetings of
this year a success.
The meetings, both those of the spring and fall terms, have been enjoyed
by all who attended because of their interesting and varied character.
At one of the spring term's meetings a part of the entertainment which
met with general acclaim was the traditional Mexican hat dance, performed
in costume by Juliette Perez and Felix Uribe. At a later meeting a sparkling
Spanish comedy was well received.
Great interest has been shown also this term in the financial standing of
the club, with Wilda Holman acting as the enthusiastic manager of several
money-making projects. The results have left the treasury in a prosperous
condition.
Once more, congratulations from the Spanish Club members to this
year's officers, and best wishes to those who will serve next year.

Le Cercle Francais is an organization composed of students who are
interested in French. At the monthly meetings we discuss methods for rais-
ing money. These methods include theater parties and sales.
The membership fee is reasonable, only ZS cents a semester, and it in-
cludes the right to attend the meetings. Entertainment and refreshments
follow the business of the day and the afternoon is enjoyed by all.
Our organization is one of the most prosperous in the school, a fact of
which we are very proud.

Boys' Block QA" Society
Under the leadership of Presidents xlohn Van Sieklen and lfugene judge,
respectively, the Block "A" Society has enjoyed another prosperous year.
The society conducted two very successful skating parties, and a banquet
was given in the cafeteria for the new membersg another one will be given
this June.
The annual Thanksgiving baskets were distributed again last fall and
all the boys worked hard to make it a happy Thanksgiving for everybody.
The society is expecting many new members at the end of this term to
bolster their already bulging ranks.

Tliefiirlsdilocls."1X"Socicty has grown since its organilation, not only
in membership, but also in the recognition and respect of the Student Body.
The society llas assumed a much greater responsibility this past year in con-
ducting the after-school sports program. liach actiye member has taken
complete charge of an actiyity, subiect to the .idyice of a faculty member.
The result has been that our extra curricular program compares very fax'-
orably with that of any school in the Federation of Girls' Athletic Associa-
tions.
Hours of work went into making the big pom-pons that made the
girls' rooting section at the football games more colorful. During the spring
term .1 joint roller-skating party was held withthc Boys' Block Society.
The proceeds from all our projects help us to do what we can for the beneht
of our school gymnasium.

Alameda Track H139
The Alameda track team of 1939 was the best since the North Coast
champions of 193 5. Consistent point winners were: "Slats" Micheli, Wayne
Girdner, Jerome Sabatini, Jim Scott, Bill Summerheld, Herb Cleaves, Bill
Olivera and Kaz Yoshioka.
In the A. C. A. L. meet at Berkeley, Alameda took fourth place, but
qualified Wayne Girdner, Sabatini, Micheli and Scott to represent the
school in the state meet at Hollister.
Coach Jolley predicts a well-balanced team for next year and a possi-
bility for the A. C. A. L. title.

Football
Alameda scored on Berkeley for the first time in I6 years and beat Pied-
mont after 12 years. This fact alone will set the football team of 1958 down
in the athletic records of A. H. S. for all time.
This year the team was fortunate enough to have for its coach Bob Carl-
ton, who did a fine piece of work. Coach Carlton spent most of his efforts
this year in training the younger fellows on the team who are the potential
stars for 1939.
All in all the Varsity team this year showed the fight, fire and good
sportsmanship that is common among the men of Alameda High. John
Van Sicklen was the captain, and Bob Gannon, Eugene judge, Tom Gay
and Larry Thomas were our outstanding players.
The following are the scores for Alameda's A. C. A. I.. season.

Basketball
Much enthusiasm was shown by the students over basketball. The turn-
out for basketball was so great that many could not be accommodated.
Coach Gilcrease gave preference to those who would have a few more sea-
sons on the team. This plan should give us a team near the top in a few years.
Seniors who were used and played well were Harmola, Bell, McNeil and
Christenson. Against Alban y, Harmola broke the Southern California Con-
ference record, with a total of 36 points. Harmola broke the A. C. A. L.
League record with a total of 121 points for the season.
The 130-pound basketball team showed a great deal of promise this
year. It consisted of Thomas, Powell, Mills, Presco and Parshall. It is ex-
pected some of these boys will soon be playing Varsity.

ship golf team. The Hornet squad won six of its practice games, and with
one game left, is in a tie for first place in the A. C. A. I-. The members of
the 1939 Varsity are Iirie Honeyman, Bill Phelan, Alden Smith, Bob Stovel,
jack Kappeler, Fred Long, Bob Price, W'yatt Parshall, Rodney Mastick and
Armitte Kimbrough. Wfith seven members ofthe Varsity returning, Coach
Cvilcrease has hopes for establishing the Alameda High School team of I9-I0
as the outstanding high school team on the Pacific Coast.

Crew
Once lgun the Alameda High School ciux
has proven its invincibility by retaining the
Northern California Championship title for
the fourth consecutive year. This year a Ber-
keley crew competed for the first time along
with the Oakland, Sacramento, Fremont,
Oakland Tech, and Alameda crews for the
state title. In the initial race of the season Ala-
meda easily defeated Berkeley by IS lengths
of open water. The following week-end the
crew traveled to Sacramento. After their re-
gatta on the river the schools met on the listu-
ary for the hnal race of the season. Allowing
their closest rival, Sacramento, an early lead,
the Alameda crew came from behind to de-
feat all five contenders in a "repeat perform-
ance .
Six members of the crew will graduate this
semester. Thus, Alameda is looking forward
to a difficult season in defense of its title next
year. The crew consisted of Felton Maillot,
stroke, .lim Moore, Dave Bridges, Bob Gen-
try, xlames Farley, captain, Flbert Swensen,
XValter von Tagen, John Goerl, Lockredge
Key, coxswaing Pertti Lindfors, substitute,
and "Zeke" XVestbrook, substitute.

B. 0. T. C.
The Alameda R. 0. T. C. battalion has just completed what may be
called its most successful year. XWe feel that Major L. KI. Bowler, our P. M.
S. 81 T., has made this unit one of the best developed in the bay area. Sgt.
M. W. Boyer, the military instructor, has one of the best rifle teams we
have had.
It is with deep regret that we are compelled to announce on this page
the retirement of our commanding officer, Dr. George C. Thompson. The
deep interest he has always taken in this command, and the encouragement
he has always given, is in a very large measure the reason for its unusual
success.
The annual competition was something to be remembered by the school,
as color and action were plentiful. The coveted streamer for the honor com-
pany went to Company "B",
The Federal inspection was probably the INOSK successful our unit has
yet enjoyed. The inspecting officer, Major Wfinters, was greatly impressed
by our calisthenics done to music which is usually attempted only by regular
army troops.
The Military Ball was attended by officers from every R. O. T. C. unit
in the bay area, and created a feeling of fellowship among the different units
of R. 0. T. C. Much of the success of the ball was due to Mr. Earl Shriber,
our faculty advisor.

Sword and Shield
The Sword and Shield Society is composed of past and present oihcers
of the Alameda R. O. T. C. unit. The society manages the Military Ball,
which is an inter-city affair this year. The advertising manager, Cadet Lt.
Col. Bryant, and the manager, Cadet Captain Marymont, have made nu-
merous trips tothe different R. 0. T. C. around the bay, in the hope that
this ball will increase the ties between schools.
The faculty advisor, Mr. Earl Shriber, has done more than his share of
work to make the ball the success it was, and the society feels indebted to
him.
Our retiring honorary president, Dr. Thompson, will be missed by the
society, as we feel that his guiding hand has led us through many difficulties.
