I 2 x V. x - Q I r T "I ' I - :yn , THE FIRST CLASS The Hrst class to lease Alameda I-hgh School was mdeed a great contrast to the present class whneh ns about to lease ALLCJfdlIl2, to Mr Prank Perkms one of the suruung members of that class there were between enght and ten members nn the class wnth a teaching staff of n1ne mstructors dur :ng the four years Students bought thenr own text books and the subyects taught were very lumlted Mathematncs wats emphaslled, I"IlgllSl1 was studled, but there were no courses ln languages, or busmess In lneu of physlcal educa tlon, there was a recess perlod at 11 00 and 2 00 o clock There were no clubs or extracurrneular act1v1t1es, and the dnfferent grades had no chance for mterclass competltlon of any kmd All soclals and HCIIVIIICS had been saved for the semor year, but because of 1 change of admmlstratlon thelr plans were dnsrupted so that the class mxssed out not only on a busy senlor year but they d1d not have a formal graduatlon ceremony Howexer, every student was recenved 1nto the Umverslty of Callforma ID good standmg Although If would seem that llfe at hugh school 1n those days was xerx qulet, Mr Perkms recalls a thrlllmg mcxdent of high school lxfe One day durmg a peaceful rec1tf1t1on, the cry of Fxre' rang out and the school was thrown 1nto a panlc The fire was located as bemg over a furnace on the first floor and had started because of faulty constructlon As there was no fire department, the boys formed a bucket brlgade and xahantly worked to put out the fire The panlc of that class IS m sha1p contrast to the well ordered Hre dr1lls of today vsh1ch pres ents any fear or dlsorder From th1s comparlson of first and latest classes of the hlgh school, we may feel very proud and thankful for our many advantages 1n educa tlonal and social llfe over those of that flrst l1ttle class of Alameda Hlgh School 4101+ fs . e .Y . . x'3 As . , ,, N ' , ' I 1 - 7.7, 7 1 1 1 x 'y 5 Y I x . I3 M- - AN HISTORICAL SKETCH Aprll 17 1974 gust 60 years ago wltnessed the blrth of Alameda Hugh School On thlt date C T ohns was elected prmc1pal of the sehool wh1eh was loeated 111 a room known as Boehmer Hall oy er Llbe s Drug Store on the corner of Park Street and Santa Clara Ay enue The hrst class conslsted ot sex en glrls but lt grew so rapndly that 1t w as neces sary to bunld a larger school Thus was sntuated on the present sxte of Hanght School In 1888 there were 97 students enrolled but due to an mcrease to 190 students and sw teachers the school had to be moy ed 'lgalll thls time to Porter School The courses then taught 1ncluded mathematlcs Greek foreign languages hlstory and Latln The student meetmgs were held 111 the TVTLfl10dlSC Church 1nd the athletnc grounds were 1n MCKlHlCV 1 an k Dr A XX Scott beeame prnnclpal lI'1 1891 and 1LIU311'lLd ln tlns ofhee untnl 1904 when Dr George C Thompson replaced hmm The enrollment at th1t tlme was 377 pupxls and eleven teachers But before Doctor Scott left he had the honor to be prlncxpal durmg the perlod of the financing and bulldnng of the new hlgh school The passmg of the bond lssue 1n the years 1901 to 1903 was due largely to the efforts of the students On September 9 1907 the eornex stone was la1d at Central Ay enue and Wfal nut Stleet and the eonstruetlon began The dedlcatlon took place on N X 73 1903 Improy ements follow ed rapldly from then on a balcony was added to the assembly hall and bungalows were placed 111 the yard By the year of 1973 nt was necessary to pass a new bond xssue whlch resulted 111 the bulldmg of our present hlgh school In 1979 fun ther 1I'I1pI'OX ements were needed requ1r1ng the bunldlng of a sun room and a hy EICHC room and the entlre bulldmg was cleaned and repunted Our beautnful school of today IS now one of the foremost ot the state w 1th xts large enrollment of oy er 7000 students +114 ' f ' 11. 7 7' 1 1 1 V 1 , e , , 1 . , .
