ALABAMA «0? -{X -U -Or -{X -Or -Or The U.S.S. ALABAMA (BB60), fourth vessel of her class, was commissioned August 16, 1942, and joined th e fleet early in 1943. Since that time she has logged many a mile, and compiled a combat record of day to day excellence in performance of duty, while participating in each phase of the war, that every man aboard may well be proud of. The Mighty " A " has been with naval forces participating in— 1943 Spring and Summer — Operations protecting NORTH ATLANTIC supply routes. Operations with the BRITISH HOME FLEET, including — The NORWAY Invasion Feint. Fall— Operations protecfing and supporting SOUTH PACIFIC supply routes and operations. November — Operations in support of the occupation and capture of the GILBERT ISLANDS. December — Bombardment of NAURU ISLAND. 1944 January— Bombardment of Jap-held islands of KWAJALEIN ATOLL in the MARSHALLS. February — Operations in support of the occupation and capture of the MARSHALL ISLANDS. The First TRUK Raid. The raid on SAIPAN and TINIAN, in the MARIANAS, including — A thirteen-hour ship vs plane battle in which a sustained Jap air attack was repelled without damage to our forces. March — Strikes on PALAU, YAP, and WOLEAI, in the western CAROLINES. April- Operations in support of the occupation and capture of HOLLANDIA, NEW GUINEA. May — The Second TRUK Raid. Bombardment of PONAPE, in the CAROLINES. June — Operafions in support of the occupation and capture of SAIPAN, TINIAN and GUAM, in the MARIANAS, including — Bombardment of shore installations on SAIPAN, and — The Battle of the PHILIPPINE SEA. July— Strikes on the PALAU ISLANDS. September — Raids on the CENTRAL and NORTHERN PHILIPPINES. Operations in support of the occupation and capture of the southern PALAUS. October — Strikes on the NANSEI SHOTO (Ryukyu Islands), FORMOSA, PESCA- DORES, and VISAYAN-LUZON are as. Battle East of TAIWAN (Formosa) in which sustained Jap air attacks were repelled. Operations in support of landing operations on LEYTE, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS. The Battle of the PHILIPPINES. In the course of these operations, the ALABAMA has steamed more than 175,000 miles, ranging through 92 degrees of Latitude and 250 degrees of Lon- gitude. Veteran officers and men of the ALABAMA are more than qualified members of the Ancient and Honorable Orders of BLUENOSES, SHELLBACKS, and THE GOLDEN DRAGON, for she has crossed the ARCTIC CIRCLE 6 times, the 180th MERIDIAN an equal number of times and the EQUATOR no less than 24 times. For combat duty they are entitled to wear seven stars. We may each of us be proud of THE MIGHTY " A " s combat history of par- ticipation in each phase to date of the CENTRAL and WESTERN PACIFIC Cam- paigns, and perfect record as heavy support (or good luck charm) in that no aircraft carrier has suffered damage from enemy action while screened and sup- ported by the ALABAMA. -C? « -Cr -Or -t? -C?
