arecleucf .Maforg In the fall of the year 1941 37 11ttle f1rst grad ers made the1r appearance rn Akron Elementary School Miss Ethel Heltzel Cwho IS now Mrs Chuck M1llerJ was the1r tra1ner She had to have plenty of patience to be able to teach them somethmg Remember the p1ctures we drew of each other Those were the days Then 1n 1942 M1ss Sh1ery led us 1n our s cond grade work We had ga1ned and lost some stu dents but there were approxlmately 36 of us At Chrlstmas t1me MISS Shlery Jolned the Waves Then part of our class moved up one half grade 1nto the power of Mxss Morrls As the vear went on yve were promot d 1nto Mrs Eva Mathxesen s th1rd grade We had sev eral new students that year There were 42 of us We can still remember the mad rush to Mary Belks for bubble gum Whoever had the money was the p rson who had to loan some to the rest of us Then 1n 1944 Mrs Bettv Sanders gulded us on but she went to Joln her husband who was ln SCFVICC So for the rest of the year we had f1ve dxfferent teachers Thls year we lost nme students and ga1ned f1ve In the next year yve went lnto Mrs Mathle sen s hands once more Thls year we were back to 36 students We were gettlng older and we tried to act a l1ttle more grown up Fmally we came to the S1Xth grade Thxs was our last year at the old grade bu1ld1ng We were the big shots that year Mr Russel Shlpley was our teacher We had approxxmately 39 students enrolled 1n our class Then came the b1g year In the fall of 1947 a through the halls of A H S Learmng how to get from one class to another was our blggest trouble Everythmg was so dlfferent We elected off1cers and even had class dues The boys were play1ng basketball and we thought that thmgs couldnt get much dlfferent MISS Dust was our sponsor Then we went on 1nto the elghth grade Our subjects were gettlng a l1ttle harder Mr Bllck enstaff was our sponsor that vear Remember the flrst day of school Charles Ramsey came to class wlth h1S brlght red hat on Some of us had entered the band at th1s t1me We dldnt reahze how few years were left Then came our most 1mportant year of school These four years w1ll soon be happy' memorles We entered h1gh school yy1th 30 freshm n en rolled Thls vear Mr POHt1US was our sponsor We were a very rowdy bunch but I guess that IS to be expected of freshmen We elected Offl cers and they were as follows Pres1dent Harold Le1n1nger Vlce Pres1dent Steve Arter Secre tary Judy K1nney and Treasurer Charlene Dlck The boys ln our class had started playlng on the basketball team and th y thought they were really somethlng Thls year we lost some stud nts and ga1ned some Barbara Jacobs left us and w ent to Wabash Harry Carlton came to Jom us from South B nd and Robert Ollver came from the Ph1l1pp1nes go on to be Sopho noyy were feellng a Then yye were ready to mores Every one of us by Page I5 httle older Mr Pontlus sponsored us agam th1s year How he l1ved through It we'1l never know For our class offxcers th1s year we chose Pres1dent Harold Lemmger Vxce Pres1dent, Jerry Reed Secretary Barbara Waechter, Treasurer Suz1e Berger Remember the cake raffle we had at a ball game to make money for our treasury? Also do vou remember 1n December we held our flrst basketball game tw 1th Culverj ln our new gym? Th1s year yve lost and ga1ned some students also Dorothy Dnckson moved and IS now gomg to a South Bend school Jean Drudge wlthdrew from school So fmally we entered 1nto our Junlor year It se med as though everythlng started happemng at once Mlss Kurtz and Mr Casson were our sponsors The boys ln our class were promment on the basketball t am for this we should be very proud and we are Durmg the summer we lost Phyllls Cassldv and yve also lost Pat Harrls who moved to Champaxgn Ill1no1s Thls was regreted by us all but especlally by one member of our cl lss SUYIC Berger who had been w1th us ln our sophomore class moved to M1am1, Florlda Thxs year yye d clded to sell magazme subscr1pt1ons to bu1ld our class treasury We all made very good salesmen Th1s year we held our class party 1n Ester Dayvsons woods I dont th1nk any of us w1ll ever forget lt esou tally one member of the class who st1ll doesnt have the stlck tlght out of h1s Jacket Remember the four gallons of clder some of the boys borrowed Pmkv cut h1s thumb on a Jug that he broke whxle borrowmg It and thought he was go1ng to bleed to death' Then we gave a very nlce recept1on for the held at Warsaw After Chrlstmas t1me our class had charge of the canteen Thls 1S an experlence that none of us yvlll ever forget Also a Jltterbug bunch of Junlors presented the1r f1rst class play A Case of Sprmgtxme ' Mlss Kurtz dlrected our play Remember how some of us forgot our lmes We also ga1ned a student th1s year Jane Bow en came to Jom us from Gllead Th1S year yve ordered our class rmgs whxch we thmk about the prettlest anyone ever had ln A H S An automoblle acc1dent took the l1fe of our classmate J3Ckl Kamp March 19:12 We mlssed h1s sxlent presence ln our class but we shall al ways remember hlm We selected our offlcers as folloyymg Presl dent J rrv Reed Vlce Pres1dent Harold Le1n mger Secretarv Judy Kmney Treasurer Bar bara Waechter And now last but not least we entered 1nto our last year of h1gh school For some of us It was a glad dav and som yy Ish lt yvere only thelr fxrst But all of us no matter what our fee11ngs are are makmg th1s our best year of school Our sponsors are Mr Casson and Mr Deaton We elected thc same peopl for our offlcers as we had ln our Jun1o1 year e Q 9 ' ' , . . .
