Because of the teams motiva- tion, cooperation, and determination. Everyday the Raiders were out on the baseball diamond working up a sweat in effort to become a strong team. With the returning veterans the season turned out to be a fairly good one. Even though Pete Rose may not have been among the baseball play- ers, we were led by a host of talented guys. Under the direction of Coach Forgia and Coach Colacicco, the Raiders were still batting hard and sliding long. V .WN 14f VARSITY BASEBALL gi liies 57' off. ""' ' I ' . ,J ' - O 4 0 4 . YEARBOOKf53 Better Than Ever The Raiderettes began the 1981 year by traveling to .San Diego to at- tend a spirit camp. There they learned new cheers and routines. The Raider- ettes came back with many awards including a trophy, a unity award two spirit awards and many ribbons for superior routines and cheers. The group is sponsored once again by Mrs. Farmer and all the Raiderettes greatly appreciate her help. The Raiderettes have enlarged their group this year by adding a Freshman cheering squad. HE CREA TURE CREEP The play is set in the 19th century Tran- sylvania where Baron VonBlitzen lives in an ancient castle. The Baron, it turns out, is a mad scientist with a wife who loves to tell fortunes and who sings off key. He also has a daughter, Daisy, who is lovely but naive. The moldy old castle comes equipped with an old family servent named Gretchen and a hideous scientist's assistant named Mord. As the curtain rises we find Daisy returning home after four years of college. She is accompanied by her fiance, Frank, and her roommate, Babsy. As the plot unfold we meet the Barons wife, Maritza, and her sisters along with their fiances who amazingly look like the same man. ln the end after Frank, the fiance, discovers some disturbing facts about Daisy's family, and decides to run off with Babsy, leaving Daisy to be consoled by a talent scout who looks exactly like the man her aunts have just married. Oh! and of course, Mord and Gretchen get mar- ried because in Transylvania you take what you can get. Finally on Friday afternoon there was the traditional Homecoming Parade consisting of the Raiderettes, the A.H.5. Band, pep trucks, Homecoming Royalty, and ofcourse the class floats. At last the moment of truth came, at the football game that was to decide how the mood would be set for the rest of the even- mg. During the halftime ofthe game the King 6 Queen were crowned with Denise Garcia as Queen and Kary Allen as King. Susan Camp and Garda Olea were the alternates. The class floats were also judged with the Sophomores 1st, Seniors 2nd, Freshman 3rd and Juniors 4th, Sorry to say, the Coolidge Bears managed to win the game. Their record showing only four wins against six losses, but the returning Red Raiders gained the valuable experience for the 82-83 season. Another factor contributing to the season was the key injuries always coming at the wrong time. New to the coaching staff is coach John Thompson who took over the duties of head coach. Assisting him was veteran coach John Hickman seeing his first year as a varsity coach, although he has coached track for many years. Aja High will enter the Class B conference next year and hopes are that the Raiders wlll be able to face the new competition with better success. FOOTBALLX85 at AL 1 1 At the start of the 81-82 basketball season the Running Raiders were ready to face their opponents with perfected skills and winning attitude. All of this new found strength was partly do to the teams strong will to win. The driv- ing force behind that will was headed by coach Bo Whitelock. This was coach White- lock's first year and proved to many that he had the ability to keep the team at top shape. Ajo was predicted at the beginning of the season to be one of the lowest ranked team in the conference. This year's team was filled with much more talent then expected. MGIRLSA BASKETBALLXQ1 Prid 92fVOLLEYBALL Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massa- chusetts. It is one of the few sports in- vented that has extended around the world. The game was originally called Minonette, but was changed as players seemed to "volley" the ball back and forth. Six players make up a team- left, cen- ter and right forwards: left, center and right backs. There are no use of bats or sticks. The server must hit the ball with his fist or hand, but after that, you may use any part of the body. CCatching or holding the ball is a no-no!J The object of volleyball is to hit the ball back and forth over the net without letting it touch the floor in the team's own court. A player cannot hit the ball twice consecutively. Points are scored if the receiving team fails to return the serve. This happens when a player commits a foul. The serv- ing team then gets a point and contin- ues to serve until they fail. Neither team gets a point if the serving team fouls up. The other team then gets the ball. Each player on the team rotates clockwise and has a chance to serve. The scoring goes up to 15, but the winning team must win by 2 points.
