BH 01' Suppose for just a minute we were back in the year 1939 In March to be exact As we look into various homes about 50 we see preparations being made for a big day Kindergarten' As we approach the school we see Bonnie Dlouhy and Joanne Roden skipping merrily along to their doom We could say something about them just skipping school now but they would never think of domg that Oh what luck' Here comes little Donny LeRoy Tarr from the west end Whos that coming from behind that tree Why if it isn t Johnny Nordean Even then they had team work coming into school together Oops who s this com mg so fast Well whatdlya know Wed Wider Wiley He was the Hopalong Cassidy of our grade Boy how we envied him and h1s red wagon Here comes Doctor Ed qulst Oh how he liked to paint Muriel Hogan s tonsils with the paint brush And so with Mike Daly cutting his initials on the door of our beautiful little play house we were booted into the f1rst grade Ah those were the days That was the year we all took part in the grade operetta as violets What a mis Judgment of character that was The entire year was hi lighted with the noon perfolmances given by a few tal ented people The biggest hit was Goldllocks and the Three Bears wlth Mike Daly in the leading role The Papa Bear I mean He sure was scary' By some miracle of miracles we entered the second grade What a year this was going to be thought the boys Pretty Miss Green There vias many a broken heart when she got married and lf ft us That was the year we were Joined by bramy Bev St John flirty Sandra Jenmson ba hful Cladys Thomas and others We continued to learn our ABC s and lady klller Bill Smart decided to put some of this knowledge to work Too bad Weesie couldn t control herself when she recelv ed that note B111 had to write those romantic words I love you 100 times on the board We ended that year up with a bang The games weren t too good at the school picnic but those dime cups sure were On the first day of the third grade we all had the g S E S' PP There standing by the door was an innocent looking httle girl Everybody was askmg everybody else who that fat girl was Come to find out her name was Betty Jane Olson If you ve ever had a dull year and who hasn t you know how much we appreciated the enrollment of Richard Modln We ve never had a dull moment since Much to the distress of Joanne Moore and Alice McGown Lorrame Courier a five foot five brunette descended up on us Joanne and Ahce who were usually neck and neck for first place during the school picnics had to concede defeat to Lorraine Now the battle was for second place and that was soon lost when Lorraines younger sister Emma enrolled she being five foot six On the first day of the fourth grade we crept around the corners with caution Most of our year was broken up by scarlet fever but no serious after effects resulted At least I hope not This was the year when it was quite common to see Donny Tarr and Tommy Mickley come flying through the door This was followed only by the remark that Thirza Wedel was practicing her Jlu Jitsu Miss Lehn and Miss Downing were our next victims Miss Lehn was the teacher who showed us how to chew gum She was forever pulling out her gum and twisting her hair This year J1m Miller Joined our happy ranks Oh Jim Miller the heart throb the irresistible the lady killer The big romance of this year though was Thirza Wedel and Bob Gabrio Those daxly love pats given Bob were sure romantic' It was this year when we showed our moms how clever we were by making them a pres ent of a parrot made of milk pods or some wax fruit What artistic ability' It took the Janitors a week to get rld of the milk pods Mrs Ewy and Mrs Anderson were next to have the task of trying to pound something 1nto our heads Bob Newton began to show his love for music by tipping over the piano That s what you d call startmg out your musx cal career with a bang Andrew Bodin was with us this year and used to love to draw for Th1rza Wedel Did you ever try drawmg with one arm twisted behind your back Joanne Moore and J1m Steeg kept Richard Modin in suspense durmg grade band by Jim holdmg his hom at arms length and Joanne playing her own Poor Richard he never dld figure out how that horn played without Jim blowing in it It was also this year that the class started to show its mterest in sports Basketball and wrestling The two sixth grade rooms tangled in a game whlch had everyone spellbound Don Tarr was the hero of the day making the wmmng two points What was the score' You guessed it Two to nothing The wrestling team was also very well matched Thirza We-del weigh mg 127 pounds and Joanne Moore weighing 97 had their daily rounds in the cloak room I wonder who won The year finallv arrn ed we were in our first year of Jr High We thought we were really high and mighty until we met Miss Hanson and her detention slips Most everybody s school day was a half hour longer that year Newcomers that year were Ruth Buhlman Mary Cald well Charlotte Kell Pat Johnson and Mouse Robbie Bobby Ball and Sandra kept the romance department ahve that year The boys were saddened at the leaving of Jean Tully and Janet Ward Those were the days in 8th grade With the arrlval of Weesle Arens to our grade you would frequently see girls in formals tripping up the long walk to her house to those exciting parties Ruined more formals that way aye Wees1e This was also the year we had the big strike in English We poor little chilluns had Just too many books to carry Well as they say Time Marches On o we marched to the ninth grade Ah wheels at last first year of high school This year we made our mark in thc school wmmng the trophy for the best float We haven t seen lt since Anyway we had fun working on the float Newcomers th1s year were many Among them were Joanne Lundeen Marlene Kib bey Allene Buss Mike Daly Doug Melby Rip Chord Buster John on Ben Re-em Willard Bauman Lucy Keath and Jeane Paugh Tenth grade at last and for those who made lt through Algebra Geometry So others ln the class would girls of the class acted as waitresses at the Jr Sr Prom and Banquet The Aitkin Band pent one week in July at Winnipeg helplng them celebrate the 75th annlver sary of the city Our Jumor Class Play Drums of Death under the dlrectxon of Miss Kinder and Mr Webkmg was a mag nifxcent success The highlight of the year was the Jr Sr Prom and Banquet Faraway Place was the theme and class president Weesle did a fine Job of appomting committees and carrymg out the work After the Prom most of the couples turned up at the Y which had been reserved earlier Our class picnic was at Garrison We spent the day playing baseball swimming fa few of the silly onesh and riding m a motor boat on Lake Mille Lacs New students this year were Muriel Lundeen and Rich Pursley We were very sorry to see two of our favorite classmates leave us Mouse Robbie and Buzzy Lind August 27 1950 brought us back once again to AHS for the last time The first kickoff of the season ended with Aitkin 26 Deer River 0 We won t mention the oth er games but what a year for Mmnesota and us' October 20 Homecoming mmus a parade was quite a success OK A1tk1n KO Cloquet was the theme and that we did winning 9 6 Alice McGown and Buster Johnson reigned over the festivities The A Book Carnival an all school play The Hasty Heart and a Sadie Hawkins Day dance followed Two new boys Joined our ranks friendly Phillip Ullrich from Germany and athletic Larry Shields War threats were again present and much to our sorrow several boys from our class left wlth the 47th Guard DIVISION Mike Daly Jim Collins and Rich Purs ley The year is half gone now and we are looking for ward to the Banquet and Prom the Semor Tea Senior Class Play Skip Day Baccalaureate and
