NIGHT SIGHT: PART I Happy Hour Night sight, bright lights. Steppin ' off campus to do anything is great! Take me to Kroger and I ' m happy but I ' d really prefer Buckhead Beach, Packett ' s, or Harrison ' s. Peachtree ' s the main drag: Lenox, Phipps, McNeeley ' s, Carlos McGee ' s, and my favorite corner Gyro Wrap. A sandwich at D.B. Kaplan ' s anytime is fine; dancing at Scooter ' s, elan, and Tingles is better. Take me to dinner at Dailey ' s or brunch at Brennan ' s and I ' ll follow you anywhere. Nachos at Billy ' s, Alexander ' s Eagle, or Lullwater makes a good late-night snack — but when my pockets are empty I head for Dunkin ' , Krispy, or Zestos. A beer at Buckhead Cinema and Draft is a Friday night must. Pippin ' s still has the 1 pizza, but Athen ' s and P by C are still closer. Shaggin ' is best at P.J. Haleys; music is best at Agora and Moonshadow Saloon. See you at Brandywine Down ' s for happy hour! Just get me away from Decatur for awhile. It doesn ' t matter where just get me out of here! 26

7926 Freshman had it easy then — during Black Cat — in 1926, during Sophomore week, sophomores made freshmen wear short white dresses with pantaloons and tennis shoes, green bonnets and no makeup. A look back through the Student handbook reveals the stringent rules students faced. For example, underclassmen had to turn lights out at 10:30 every week night, and 10:00 on Sundays. After this time, visiting and talking in corridors or bathrooms was prohibited. Written parental consent was reqired in order to 1.) receive male callers, 2.) spend the day or night off campus, 3.) leave the campus with men, or 4.) meet men in the city. Permission from the dean was needed to go automobiling with men. In such a case it was necessary to have a faculty chaperone. Young men were not allowed on campus on Sundays, unless they were brothers or friends from out of town. All social functions were to be avoided as far as possible on Sundays. Church attendance was required. Students were on their honor not to dance if their parents did not approve, and dancing was only allowed in the gym and in Inman Lobby during special hours. No objectionable dances were allowed and men were not permitted to the dancing times. Restrictions were placed on talking to men in public places for over ten minutes. 1948 Cotillion club, ASC ' s social dance organization, sponsored the Fall Formal which was remembered for its black ties, swishing hoopskirts, flowers, skillfully decorated gym, and music « A by the Nomads. The Social Standards Club kept students aware of common mistakes in etiquette. 1951 Cotton dresses, sweaters, and skirts are recommended for campus wear. Hats, gloves and hose are appropriate for church. Students are urged to avoid wearing scarves and kerchiefs in the dining room at all times and are never to wear them to the dining room at dinner. Slacks and blue 1 jeans may be worn for picnics and hay rides. They may not be worn on the campus except by students working on extra- curricular activities (i.e., dramatic productions in Presser or in gym). NOW men can visit your room every weekend. 1982 As the years have progressed, students have been able to govern themselves according to contemporary social norm. Acting as responsible women, we have asked the school for changes never dreamed of as acceptable only a few years earlier. We found the school willing to reach back to us and make changes that we requested. By give-and-take , Agnes Scott has retained and even strengthened its high standards as an institute of higher education . . . an unconventional education for women who will soon be entering into careers never thought possible only a few years ago. Many things have changed for us here at Scott: clubs, dress, rules, classes; but while looking through those yearbooks-of-old, we found a common denominator. As always, a Scott student is a Scottie, and a Scottie is an angel in disguise. (from the class of 1952). 25
