AGERHOLM fired her guns two trips
to the gun line off South Yietnznm, The first,
20 days in March and Xpril, was spent in
Ill Corps in Song Nga Ray, the mouth of the
Saigon River. We fired into the Rung Sat
Special Zone from L1 position about one mile
from the heach. The second gun line period,
ll days in May, found us helping the lOlst
Airhorne near Phan Thiet in southern ll
Corps.
Each day in the river saw us slipping
up the channel in the early morning, firing
for many long, hot hours through the day,
and returning to sea to unrep or to a night
anchorage in the hay to provide night har-
assment tire.

worn?1-ardznent, patrolling. screening, and
escorting services for the United Nations
forces. During her second tour AXGER-
HOl,Til was hit by coniniunist shore fire.
ln May 1960. 1-.GliPtHOl,Xl reported
to Mare Island Naval Shipyard for conver-
sion un-'ler the Fleet Rehabilitation :ind
Iioflcrnization fFltXXli Program. NGICR-
PTUTAI lost part of her old World War ll

plus new electronic equipment that made her
a more modern warship. The modification
included Anti-submarine Rocket, helicopter
facilities, and new radar and sonar.
ln May 1962, AGERHOLM became the
first ship to fire an anti-submarine rocket
equipped with a nuclear war-head. Another
first for AGERHOLM was on 8 May 1968
when she became the first ship to fire a
Rocket Assisted Projectile QRAPj from
her Five-inch guns.
Since her commissioning in 1946,
AGICRHOLM has made sixteen cruises to
the Western Pacific, Since the beginning of
hostilities in Vietnam, she has patrolled
the Vietnam coast, provided gunfire sup-
port, provided search and rescue services
for downed pilots, and protected our air-
craft carriers against possible enemy
attack.
,Xt the end of this deployment AGER-
HOIAI was voted the outstanding CruDes-
Pac gunline destroyer off Vietnam during
the period 1 July19695 to 30 June 1969. The
honor came as a result of the Top Gun
.Xward competition held by the First Anglico
gunfire spotters who control all naval gun-
fire support off 'Vietnam..."Your rapid re-
sponse, cooperativeness, accuracy and re-
liability were key factors in selecting you
for this honor. Your accurate and timely
fires employed in support of ground forces
have proved to be an effective weapon
against hostile forces in RVN."
Model of AGERHOLM located at
the United States Naval Academy.
