School were plagued throughout the season with injuries causing Coacn Kibbe to work with inexperienced personnel. As the year progressed more iniuries occurred and headaches became numerous for the coaches. But the small under rated team managed to pull out the best season in three years. What was the highlight of the year? Yes. you guessed it. the Agawam-West Side rival game. The second half determination of the Brownies to overcome the Terriers for the eighth straight year, estab- lishing it as the UPSET GAME OF THE YEAR. Behind the fine blocking of Don Young. Nick Longhi. Chip Shearer. Gerry Burke and Bob Morin, lead the small but determined Don Progulske. Scott Macey. Mike O'Brien and Mike Drewnowski to pile up yards and most important of all Touchdowns to shock not only the Terriers but also a crowd of a thousand spectators. The game will be long remembered in the hearts of many. We must say farewell to the tri captains Chip Shearer. Don Progulske and Scott Macey along with lettermen Gerry Burke. Steve Nooney. Paul O'Brien. Len Caron. Chip Kistner. and Jim Dempsey. Coaches Clifford Kibbe. Joe Modzelewski and Howard Murphy are looking forward to a fine season next year with returning lettermen Don Young. Mike O'Brien. Bob Morin. Nick Longhi and George Hill. TRACK “This Team is Really on the Track” The track team of Agawam High School under new coaches. Mr. Peter Frasca, and Mr. Craig Norton, finished a fine 1969 Track Season. Some impressing highlights of the '69 season were Rich- ard Brandoli's record breaking javelin throw of 178 feet 10 inches. Also a feature highlight of the season was a new win over South Hadley. The 1970 team looks very promising says Coach Frasca. The team will be led by Captains Doug Turner. Richard Brandoli, Chip Shear- er. and Don Smith. Other standouts for the season should be “Lit- tle” Mike Simonds, Dan Sullivan and Dave LeGrand. CROSS COUNTRY Successful Season Despite Many Newcomers” The 1969 Cross Country team finished a fair season with a 34 record and the middle spot of the Western Mass. Cross-Country League. Co-captains Mike Simonds and Don Smith were the only returning members from, last year s varsity team, but new- comers Doug Turner. Mark Oliver. Dan Sullivan. 8ob Meis- ter. Ed Rivers. John Doyle, and Gary Adams performed ca- pably throughout the season. Simonds finished 12th out of 220 runners in the Western Mass. Championships. With Simonds. Meister. Doyle. Rivers, and Sullivan returning. Coaches Frasca and Norton should have a solid nucleus to work with next year. 95 BASEBALL Not a Championship Team Since 1951 The 1969 Season brought in a new club and a new. first year coach. Gerald Smith. Coach Smith tried to break the 18 year old streak of playing less than 500 ball. The team, off to a slow start behind captain Gary Melbourne and senior members Bob Quinn. George Bick- ford. Paul Vella. Tom Mayfield and Bob Frank ended up with another frustrating season of 7 wins and 13 loses. Coach Smith feels that an erratic pitching staff, inconsistent clutch hit- ting and sloppy fielding resulted in the losing season. Returning starters for the 1970 Varsity will be infielders Lenny Caron. Bob Eldridge, Andy Ouimet, Don Progulske and Rich Skowera. in the outfield. Lou Conte. Peter Ronchi, Bill Walsh and pitcher Bob Leopardi. Coach Smith feels that a lot of desire and “guts” will make the '70 season a successful one. 97 aa ?• ' r ■' •. • ' jirf. % U -W- • • - « . . •’ Z IkLu '■J HOCKEY Small but Champions The students of Agawam High have much to be proud of when referring to our hockey team. The skaters started a fine season by capturing first place in the first half of the hockey season. They expect to skate right into the championship. They now stand 8-1-1. only losing to Westfield by a mere score of 5-4. The Brownies fought all the way but Westfield had a break late in the third period, thus scoring the winning goal. The tie game that came against the very strong and very fast skaters of East Longmea- dow was a thriller down to the wire ending 1-1. A like Drewnowski had a fine night in the net with 25 saves. We are the highest scoring team and the low- est team scored against in our league. Up to now we have the leading scorers of the league, Fred Pajer and Bill Sapelli. The skaters have a lot going for them, let’s hope they have enough to carry them through to a championship. 101 TENNIS “High Hopes for Tennis The 1970 Tennis Team looks very promising, as five of last year's seven starters return. Although no sen- ior members are on this year’s squad, juniors Paul Houlihan, Tom Wyatt, and Joe Russo are expected to lead the team to victory. Supporting them as sopho- mores are Steve Duplessis and Billy Scott. Coach Za- bielski hopes to top last year's record of 11 wins and 9 loses, good for a fourth place in last year’s Valley Wheel Championship, and go on to place in the State Meet. The competition will be keen, yet the hopes are high for this year's return squad! BASKETBALL The Dribblers of Agawam High are off to a fine start in the '69 ’70 season. They stand now with a 3-2-0- record, losing its first two games to Chicopee Comp by five points and Chicopee by a mere two points. Then the bouncing Brownies came back to blow Comp off the court with Pete Ronchi scoring 34 points. And again coming back and tak- ing full control over Chicopee, beating them by seven points. Chip Kistner led that drive with 23 points. The team finished off the season with West Side, dominating them by six points. Again Chip Kistner the hot hands of the club with 30 points. Under the leadership of Captains Pete Ronchi, Chip Kistner and Len Caron, the team is looking for the Championship. GOLF “Swinging Season” The 1969 Golf Team ended a swinging season this year as the Valley Wheel Champs with a record of 14 wins and one loss. Although the team was not up to par in the Western Mass. Tournament, Coach Roger LeClerc wasn’t teed off a bit but, on the contrary, hoped to really club the tournament teams next year. After all, golf is his bag. Leading the 1970 Golf Team will be returning seniors Bob Brown and Mike Sticca while other positions will be filled tentatively by Dave Osypuck, Dan Caroleo, Sam Tarnaskus and Ed Tyberski. Also, Coach LeClerc in- tends to putter around looking for some new potential golfers. If the club swings like it did this year, all we can say to opposing teams is “fore!” 107 v SOCCER • Inexperience Spells Defeat'' This year the AHS soccer team found itself compet- ing in the Pioneer Valley Soccer League — the toughest in the state. Although the team had only one previous year of experience, it presented the best teams in the state with stiff competition. Agawam's overall record of one win — nine loses, can be attributed solely to inexperience. With the guidance of coaches Willard and White, the team’s determination and hustle prevailed throughout the entire season. Agawam's defense, led by fullback Tom Davilli, John Cheslawski. Wayne Gates, and Larry Webster as well as halfbacks Steve Atwater. John Kozak. Mike Presz. and Mike Duffy, developed into a pow- erful machine as the season progressed. The offense, led by captains Bob Leopardi and George Mickey, included wings Jeff Leporati. Doug Borgatti and Bob Dumas; insides Bob Brown. Don Wheeler, and Ray Lefebvre; and center forward Wayne La- Riviere. Steve Roberts tended the nets for Agawam for the better part of the season. Steve Atwater was the leading scorer this year with three goals, followed by Bob Brown. Steve Roberts, and George Mickey each with one goal. 109 SKI CLUB Mt. Tom . . . pizza parties . . . SKI TEAM Competitive ski racing is a relatively new sport to Agawam, yet it has gained much momen- tum this year. At weekly races held throughout the winter months on the slopes of Mt. Tom in Holyoke, the Agawam racers have gained the respect of the entire Western Massachusetts Ski League. The Agawam Team, led by co-captains Wayne LaRiviere and Gary Toczko, started the season with victories over Northampton, Holyoke Catholic, Minnechaug Regional, Chicopee Comprehensive and Chicopee; but was unable to beat the league’s traditional champions, West Side. Coach Zabielski sees this year as a building year for next year’s league champions. Return- ing next year as a nucleus for Agawam’s championship team will be Greg Toczko. KENNETH PENROSE 19 Withendge Street 44 Hamilton Circle 927 Main Street 350 Meadow Street With the commencement of the fall semester of 1966, the class Of 1970 took its first steps in Agawam High. Although these first days were spent in a state of bewilderment, the remaining four years were filled with delight and tribulation, flurry and serenity — all com- bined to make an unforgettable high school career. Our freshman year was one of continuous acceptance of our new responsibilities. Early elections were held and the freshmen class elected Barry Cleary, president; Gale Sullivan, vice-president; Delora Argiro, treasurer; and Chris Maule, secretary. When six representa- tives were elected to the student council, the freshman class got its first taste of power. But power was not only expressed in words; far out on the football field, the Agawam Brownies won another championship and car- ried their winning streak to twenty-six games. The exuberance of our first year was saddened when Mr. Dacey, after thirty-one years of ser- vice, announced his retirement. Success and disappointment combined to fill our sophomore year with the extremes of emo- tion. Signs of change were present when Mr. Raymond E. Harris was appointed the new principal. Expectation of change became a reality when the sophomore class, through the efforts of our class officers — Barry Cleary, president; Gale Sullivan, vice-president; Jean Cressotti, secretary; and Delora Argiro, treasurer — ord- ered our class class rings in May instead of waiting until September of our junior year. 160 The Streak Is Over Cathedral Stuns Agawam, 32-0 Our achievements, however, were tempered by the end of our winning streak in football and a sit-down strike on March 14 to protest the strictness of the dress code. Our junior year was a year of committees. The student council held its first annual Winter Carnival. The junior class, headed by its officers, president, Scott Macey; vice-president. Bruce Cohen; secretary. Jean Cressotti; and treasurer, Delora Argiro; made its contribution by participating in the snow sculpture contest. Another committee was formed to decorate the gym for the West Side rally. The juniors defeated the seniors in the decoration compe- tition. In the spring, there was the greatest commit- tee, organized under the direction of chairman Robert Eldridge for our class’ most demanding undertaking, the junior-senior prom. Camelot. the theme, was a perfect expression of the romantic aura of the evening. Government was also a focal point of our ju- nior year. Paula Tatro and William Walsh were respectively chosen to go to Girls’ and Boys’ State. Bruce Cohen was elected president of Western Massachusetts Student Council, an honor which was bestowed on Agawam High for the second consecutive year. Another precious honor earned was the cham- pionship of the “As Schools Match Wits.” Wil- liam Walsh was the only junior member of the team. The senior class officers, president, Scott Ma- cey; vice-president, Robert Eldridge; secretary, Chris Maule; treasurer, Susan Smith; led the senior class through a year of old traditions and the forming of new traditions. A modification of the dress code allowed girls to wear dress slacks to school. Two other tra- ditions were started in the music department. On November 27. the Agawam High chorus presented Sing Out, Agawam,” and on Fe- bruary 14, the Agawam High School Band gave its first pop concert. Along with these new events, the Kid Party and Senior Banquet were celebrated. Personal involvement was highlighted by parti- cipation in two major school events and by recognition of individual talent. Pasquale Pelle- grino and Donna Symanski were the senior members of a panel discussing Vietnam on Moratorium Day. October 15, and Linda Haynes and Karen Kozlowski starred in the production of Carousel. Don Cabra was elected to McDonald’s All-American Band and Kath- leen Keefe had her poem published in a na- tional magazine. Senior year was an accumulation of four years of hard work. As the years progressed, our thoughts turned to the future. Yet, we also paused to glance back at our high school years, to the memories and fun we shared, and we hoped that tomorrow we could remem- ber yesterday. 162 Shades of Yesterday j J j J- ; 1 j 7. ll'idh ±t£vu of foy, UiLtJl Uxit fX6 of A£. Mis- chief, Innocence, Frustration, Satisfaction, Expression, Relaxation, Reminiscence” and the joy of producing a lasting memento for years to come. On behalf of the 1970 Sachem Staff, I would like to thank the following people for the assistance they have given us throughout the past year: Mr. Donald Lendry, American Yearbook Representative; and Mr. Edward Carlson, Loring Studios.
