I . 1 1 V, Speech - E 72 glisb THI' SPEECH DEPARTMENT this year has made its services available to the public It has presented programs at many' of the noon serv ace clubs at the grade school parent teacher meetings at womens clubs at Legion auatalaary meetings at granges for church organizations and at has also been responsible for many school programs One of the first assignments built up a program which was very popular with all groups Each student was assigned some phase of Adrian s civic lafe to investigate factories churches public utilities business dastract organaza tions communications transportation recreational facilities schools colleges and many others These were memorized and made into the pattern of a round table discussion This was presented on ten different occasions A Christmas play entitled Mimi Laghts the Candle was given for the Business and Professional XY omen s Club for a Sunday School class Christmas party and for the all junior davasaon assembly The next thing on thc speech agenda w as the second semester forensic speech contests The speech classes spon sored tlae local events throughout botla davasaons of the high school In the junior branch the classes first eliminated all bait the best speakers an dramatic and oratoracal declamataon These learned longer speeches and entered the local contest judged by faculty members an which two were retained from each branch to go on to the district event A member of the senior speech class acted as chairman for this meet In the senior division the local contests were judged by Mr Claude H ampton Tw o speakers w ere retained an both branches of declamataon and an extempore speaking These entered the district contest held an Adrian, April 18 Many of the orators and declaamers were on programs given at public meetings A study of radio techniques was supplemented this year by conditions simulating as nearly as possible studio conditions The loud speaker and record player were placed an the balcony of the speech room and the rehearsed plays were given from there with the audience sattang below and so unable to see the participants an the broadcast Indavaduals and groups prepared and gave many different types of programs during this period A fine spirit of co operation pervaded the speech groups Never throughout the whole year was a student asked to perform on a program even when doing so meant giving up social plans, but that he graciously dad his part Some students were asked to act as chairmen of groups without being given previous notice an every case the task was ably performed The English department of Adrian High School offers a varaety of courses each designed to gave the student the maximum an appreciation and knowledge The tenth grade material presents a comprehensive review of essential facts an grammar and composition and takes tlae student a step farther an literary appreciation by the use of an anthology of masterpieces At the close of the constructions usage rules letter wratang, and the application of all this knowledge an composition work American Literature and English Literature eleventh and twelfth grade subjects offer an interesting study of all the masterpieces of the masters an the art of prose and poetic w rating an the two countries They' are taught not as isolated subjects but showing the influence of historical trend Appreciation of literary excellence as stressed as an attempt is made to interest the students an really fine materials Standards are set up to measure what makes the superlative an literature The composition course offered an the twelfth grade as a laboratory course an which students experiment with eycry type of w rating For example an preparing to write short storacs the class is introduced to samples of stories which have become classics These are analyzed for qualities which have made them great beginnings use of con vcrsataon characterization diction suspension of interest and endings Then the group is asked to write initial para graphs character sketch after making a careful analysis of the person to be portrayed clamaxes and endings This lc ads up to the making of an outline for an origin al story Often tlae stories are revv ratten an parts many times an order to achacvc just the right tonc cffect The use of the cxact word as emphasized XVhen thc task as hnally completed at as wcll done and worthvvhalc This same procedure as used with poetry cssays and drama All of thas work as supple mcntcd by a study of grammar and the usc of correct forms Thc aim of the Lnglash department as to gave cvcry student an undcrstandang of has own language and thc thrall of pradc that comes with understanding to gave ham za tool through which he can lavc a fullcr and more appreciative lafc and to prepare ham for leadership through the art of self expression 50 :.. Proxing its xersatility under fire the Maples romped to a convincing 77-7 victory ox er Marshall on the 29th of September after being held to a hard-earned 7-7 tie at halftime. Paul Mott started things off right by recovering a Marshall fumble on their oxxn 46 yard marker in the opening minutes. From here the Maples drove to the Indian s -1 yard marker and Phil Smith raced over for the score. Mitchell then ran across the extra point. Wfith seconds remaining in the half Marshall tried a double rexerse and it proxed successful as it caught the xxhole Adrian team off guard. The Maples came back in the last half to make it a xvalkaxvay, scoring once in the third quarter when Mitchell crossed thf- goal line and added the extra point and twice in the last stanza. Marvin scored early in the final quarter with Dave Millers try for the extra point being blocked. and the Marxin to Dibble combination clicked for six points vxith Dexxey Meyers running point number 27 over the goal. On the Sth of October the Adrian team got its revenge from the Tecumseh Indians. The Maples were set and determined. Thex failed to score against an inspired Tecumseh line during the first half but crashed through for three tallies and an extra point in the last two quarters to gain a 19-O triumph over Tecumseh high school.
