senior class
We, the class of 1937, have experienced three eventful years together with Clare Munger as our
class president each year. During this time our class has contributed many students to extra-currv
cular activities such as athletics. music, forensic, Maple Leaf and Sickle. .
As a class we were especially honored this spring by having one of our number, Margaret Powell,
selected as the all-around girl to represent Michigan at the Congress of the Daughters of the American
Revolution in Washington, D. C.
After experiencing these years together we have made a record of the most significant events through
the publication of the Sickle. c
In past years it has been the practice of a number of senior classes to leave a memorial to the school.
The class of 1937 upheld this tradition by purchasing a permanent die for the cover of the
Sickle.
Although the Sickle has been an annual publication for over forty years. many people are not
aware of the significance of the name. To show this significance our class purchased the permanent
die seen on the cover of this year's book. It depicts "Father Time" garnering a class of graduates
from Adrian High School who will be stored among the great number of her alumni.
Through our high school course we were guided as freshmen by Mr. Adams and as juniors and
seniors by Mr. Little. Mr. Kelly has acted as our faculty adviser throughout our entire high
school career. We wish to express to him our appreciation of his interest and helpfulness and
we extend to him our sincere wishes that the best shall be his through all the future.
Our class, like all others, is composed of boys and girls from many neighborhoods and localities,
but each one has been influenced by the spirit of Adrian High School. This influence each will
carry with him as long as he lives, and we shall all appreciate more and more as time goes on how
much the school has meant to us.

Following in your footsteps, We are the "senior class to-be". This
year found us under the able guidance of Carl Nelson, acting as our
president, Mahlon Gray. our vice-president, and Dorothy Matthes,
our secretary.
We have been Well-represented in all activities in the school, and in
the year to come we plan to soar to the top by living up to the stand-

student council
Following the precedent set last year the student council members represented the home rooms,
instead of the three classes separately. Clare .Munger was elected president: Carl Nelson, vice presi-
dent and Arlie Rogers, secretary. Five pupils were retained from last year which brought the total
membership to twenty-tive.
An honor system was introduced which provided for more eliicient and alert councilmen. Mem-
bers failing to maintain the standard automatically lost their membership. By this standard twenty-
five per cent of the credit was given for initiative and leadership. twenty-five per cent for
attendance. and fifty per cent for actual work done. It is hoped this system will prove its worth
in producing the very best representatives.
The regular all-school parties were in charge of committees from the Council, a plan which
proved very successful. ,
Five cheerleaders were selected before the football season was thoroughly under way, who kept up
the fighting spirit of the athletic-minded student body.
Several cooperative projects were undertaken by the Council, including the directing of some of
the activities during the home room period, sponsoring informal clubs, promoting friendliness,
teaching manners and social usage. and training students for library work in the study hall. The
Council took for its major problem the creating of a completely cooperative attitude an the part
of all the pupils in general assemblies, in and around the school and also the clean appearance of
the school in and out.
Just before the last football game loyalty pins were sold to stimulate school spirit. These not only
proved popular, but also very effectively served their intended purpose.
Although the Council has worked for the best interests of the school in representing the student
body it is necessarily the students themselves who bring about the cooperation needed to insure
the success of this organization. Taking past problems along with this year's, we hope that the
Student Council of 1937-38 will bring about solutions even more satisfactorily and serve to
the best of their ability in this honored capacity.

orchestra
Members of the High School Orchestra enjoyed an interesting and highly successful year. Par-
ticipants in this group became acquainted with a great wealth of fine orchestral music left our
generation by the masters and allowed Adrian citizens to share this pleasure through the presen-
tation of several public concerts. Two string quartets selected from this group became popular
at civic events. One quartet consisted of Virginia Wonder. Yvonne Crane, Eleanor Riner and
Dorothy Morse: the other was composed of Jean Burr, Ruth Schassburger, Margaret Powell and
Marion Gempel, The orchestra members were active in Adrian's instrumental solo festival, the
district festival at Albion. and the state solo festival at Ann Arbor. The orchestra completed
the year by taking part in the national orchestra contest which was held in May at Columbus.
Ohio. Honors were won at this event.
The fine record for the year is to be attributed almost entirely to the capable supervision of Mr.
Rainier and to the high standards of attainment he constantly holds before his groups.

bands
Interest and enthusiasm are the key words that best describe the activity of Adrian High's band.
The marching unit provided the usual pomp and fanfare at athletic events while the concert
unit served by furnishing fine musical entertainment for the school and community in numerous
programs. A local wind-instrument solo festival was sponsored in which each member of the
band participated. Several small ensembles furnished music regularly for many community
functions. some of which were the cornet quartet including Lloyd Underwood. Richard Kinney,
Mahlon Gray, and Lawrence Ehinger, and a wood wind trio with Treva Every, Dorothy Baker.
and Betty Kampa as participants. These groups and a number of outstanding soloists represented
Adrian at the Southeastern Michigan Festival at Albion and the State Solo and Ensemble
Festival at Ann Arbor, as well as the All-State Band. The Band wound up the year by receiv-
ing honors for an excellent appearance at the Tulip Festival in Holland, Michigan, in May.

vocal music
This year Vocal Music students have been more active than ever before. There have been four
girls' sextets, two boys' quartets. a broadcasting choir, a trip choir. and the A Cappella choir.
The latter is composed of about three hundred members, comprising all of the Senior High vocal
music pupils.
Early in November the Broadcasting choir broadcast from Ann Arbor. giving a concert later in
the day at Hartland. A broadcasting choir composed of four senior girls' sextets and twenty boys
furnished a program later in the month over XVWJ in Detroit for the Music and Youth broad-
casts. This was the most important trip of the year. .
The most interesting one to the students, however, was the trip to Minneapolis in April, This
event marked the beginning of the National Choral festivals and because of its success, the
contest will become an annual event. Doctor Hollis Dann led the entire group of eighteen choirs.
1069 students, in rehearsals and a concert. Adrian had the honor of representing the entire state
of Michigan at the Minneapolis gathering because of the iine work our Madrigal Singers did in
New York City last year for the Music Educators' National Conference.
For six years Mr. Westerman has directed all of the vocal music in Senior High School and
almost all of it in Junior High School. Having had an unusual and rich experience in college
and university, and a unique record of achievement in musical research as well as in teaching, he
has brought the standard of vocal music in our schools to a point hitherto unattained. His con-
tribution to the community life in general is immeasurable, and his influence upon Adrian
High School in particular is deep and will be lasting. -ALICE SCHULZ

maple leaf
The Maple Leaf is closing its fourth year.
In former years the journalism class did its work down in the small supply room but this year
a step of advancement was made. New tables were placed in Room 35 and some new equipment
was added so that in general the rdom took on more or less the air of a typical newspaper office.
During the first semester Elsbeth Seiffer acted as editor-in-chief and experimented with a new plan.
Instead of each individual's having a certain department to write about for every issue he was
given a different assignment each time.
The second semester Doris Recd supervised us as editor-in-chief and we were assigned special
departments for which each person was held responsible.
This year's class was headed by Elsbeth Seiffer for first semester and Doris Reed for second
semester. Other members are Randall Palmer. XVilliam Freligh. Robert Prentice. NValdron Stewart.
Miriam Vkfesterman. Loucella Hurlbut. Marilyn Rising, Opal Harmes, Mildred Dinius. Dorothy
Brandow, Betty Rhodes. Dorothy Arnold, .lean Gallup. Richard Burnor and Lawrence Phillips.
Jane Peterson. Vwfalter Koch, and Doris Bangerter. although regular contributors to the paper.
were not members of the class. l
Aided by the Activity Plan. the proceeds from the candy stand the second semester, and the
contributions by the business men bf Adrian in advertisements, sixteen issues of the Maple Leaf
have been printed this year. '
The Maple Leaf staff has entered the Quill and Scroll judging contest twice and each time has
received a second international rating. placing our newspaper well above the average in general
attainments.
The class set before itself this year the following aims:
To promote the finer appearance of our school, both inside and outside.
To encourage each student to make himself a better citizen in school and for the future.
- To make the Maple Leaf better and more newsy than all its predecessors.
XVe also have tried to promote a deeper interest on the part of each school group for the
work of all the other groups. hoping thereby to make our school more unified in spirit. We feel
that although we have not whollyiattained these aims, we may, as a class. be proud of what we
have done, and proud also of the line group spirit which has prevailled at all times.

the senior play
"The Patsy," a comedy, was giveir in the High School Auditorium, April 23, 1937 by the
selected members of the Senior Class.
The plot concerned Patricia Harrington, a girl Who "runs second" to her older sister. She is the
Patsy who is blamed whenever anything goes wrong and is forced to remain in the background
in order that her sister, Grace, may be presented to advantage. Her father, a traveling man, is
on her side and finally declares hiss independence by putting "Ma" in her place. so this brings
about Patsy's ultimate triumph and: needless to say affords her happiness as the bride of the man
she loves. l

future farmers of america
The Future Farmers of America try to develop rural leadership, establish cooperation, and make
farming a happy and successful enterprise.
XVe have participated in many outside events. After judging at the County Fair last fall, seven-
teen boys judged at East Lansing for the State Contest. Four of our boys won the State Contest.
They received a free trip to Kansas City for the National Contest. Mr. Clark and two other
boys accompanied the team. This year twenty-three boys went to Lansing.
XVe shall all remember the Father and Son Banquet held in February. There was a large
attendance and an excellent program. R. G. XVaite of the National Youth Foundation was the
main speaker.
We exchanged invitations with Blissfteld, Sand Creek, and Tecumseh chapters for degree work.
We had two judging teams this year. One was made up of the regular officers who put on the
Future Farmer degree. They were: president, Charles Earles: vice president, Victor Bublick:
secretary. Richard McAdam: treasurer, Robert Dennis: reporter, XValter Koch: watch dog, Dale
Hostetlerz conductor. Clarence Muck. There was also an all-county degree team made up of one
boy from each school in the county.
The candidates to the State Convention this year are Charles Earles and Dale Hostetler.
XVe have had a larger attendance at all gatherings this year than in the past. In 'every respect 1936-
1937 has been very successful for the F.F.A. The boys of the chapter attribute this to the
cooperation of the students and to the unfailing friendly advice and help of our adviser, Mr. Clark.

industrial training
Few people are aware that every year the "Shop" does hundreds of dollars' worth of work for
us and Adrian High School. The Machine Shop. under the direction of Mr. Warren, has been
a part of the curriculum for several years. Our new bleachers were constructed in the well-equipped
tool rooms of the Machine Shop. our lockers are constantly being repaired by Mr. Warren's
boys. and the bicycle racks are another sample of their handiwork.
In Auto Mechanics, a department introduced in the school this year. the boys are trained by
Mr. Weller to know what goes on inside a car and why. This branch in turn has its value DOI
only to the members of the class, but also to us and to the teachers, for cars may be serviced
there free of labor charge. '
Both departments train young men for practical work in the industrial world. Every year a num-
ber of them are' placed in responsible positions as a result of their excellent training in "Shop".

coaches and sports
COACH KELLY, athletic mentor for all the sports activities in Senior High since 1928, also has
charge of the physical education program throughout the grade schools of the cit
y.
Football and basketball have held the popularity spotlight jointly. The Adrian-Monroe rivalry
has set the stage each autumn in the outstanding gridiron competition in southeastern Michigan.
Four cage teams have won their way through the Regional tournaments. In l932 the Leafs
climbed to the semi-final ranks, but were eliminated by Mt. Pleasant.
Being a trackman at the University of Michigan, the sports director has in turn developed
noteworthy talent on the cinder path. and has seen these teams run off with due honor.
COACH SVVEET upon coming here eight years ago took over the tennis team. and has trained
many successful players during this period.
A few "lean" seasons have been experienced along with some outstanding successes. but lately
the leaf "racketeers" have split quite evenly. Eight victories have been posted as against seven
setbacks in the last two years. The netters have rated a second and third post durin the 1935
g
and 1936 seasons. A full schedule was planned this year in playing home and home games with

The Leaf gridders experienced one of the "leanest" seasons in many a year last autumn. but
by successfully holding Monroe to a scoreless tie they brought the trophy cup back to Adrian.
They will be on the comeback trail as they open their season with Bryan, Ohio, next fall, and
then tackle the Twin Valley opponents.

SEPTEMBER
September l-After such a long vacation it seemed
pretty good to get back to school-yet-it
was hard to get down to work.
September 9-The SENIORS are still going
around with their noses in the air Cbecause
they want to look dignihed and sophisticated
to the freshmenj and the freshmen haven't got
over that "dazed" expression yet. We sup-
pose it will wear off by the time they are
SENIORS.
September l 7-Many were laughing today as they
caught glimpses Cno more, no lessl of the
pictures that were taken a week ago. We won-
der why some of these pictures were never put
in activity books? ??
September 24-A vacation of two whole days.
We were let out for the fair. so the teachers
said. but the truth is THEY were the ones
who wanted to go. Some were even seen rid-
ing the "Loop-a-Plane".
OCTOBER
October 9-Have we school spirit? Just ask Bev-
erly Rimell if you want to know because
today she sat out in a pouring rain to watch a
football game Calso a couple of hundred other
studentsl. It was a good game even though
we couldn't distinguish one boy from an-
other, nor the football from the mud.
October 14-Just so we wouldn't forget to show
our folks our marks in "readin', writin,' and
'rithmetic", we were handed out report cards
instead of our usual grade slips. But-a great
number of parents didn't see these report
cards because their children are so very good
at imitating their signatures.
October 19-Teachers' Institute. The tables are
changed Cfor oncel and the teachers are End-
ing out how it is to listen to speeches. Maybe
they will be a little easier on us now Cunless
they skipped! lj
October 27--General assembly today and we
heard gruesome stories of what happened to
fast drivers. CBetter watch your step. Mottj .
NOVEMBER
November 3-Election day! That was a day to
remember. Everybody was betting and the
classes had straw votes. Even the teachers were
excited. But-what a let down for all these
Republicans when the Hnal votes came in!
November 5-Of all things to happen! A foot-
ball player would break his ankle just before
the Monroe game. It happened in practice and
everyone within a dozen rods heard it crack.
Anyway, Randall, you are lucky to have had
it happen the day before instead of on THE
day because those Trojans are said to be
dangerous.
November 6-Do you believe in miracles? We
suppose everybody does after that wonderful
game with Monroe. The expected score was
about 40-0 but the real score was 0-0. It was
a marvelous game and the Trojans had a big
set-back.
November 26-Thanksgiving vacation! It really
should last a week so that every one may be
fully recuperated from eating that enormous
dinner.
DECEMBER
December 3-Sh!! It's a secret. Don't mention
it but-it's being said that the freshmen still
believe in Santa Claus. It would be a shame to
spoil their Christmas by telling them so we'll
let them go on believing it.
December 8-Ice skating is a very popular sport
these days. The boys are teaching their latest
how to "swing it" on the ice. Freligh has
done his bit by taking the Editor-in-chief of
the Maple Leaf CElsbeth to youl skating.
Have any luck, Frelighil?
December ll-Coldwater and Adrian played a
game that was a game. The score was 31-17
in their favor but we were only practicing on
them.
December 18-Christmas vacation begins. There
being no snow "Beef" Clement will have to
use his new sled fwhich he hopes to get from
Santal to pull Willoween Skinner to school.
Quite a haul. eh Beef?
JANUARY
January 1-We wonder if any body arose at 7 :OO
today. It's a good thing that we still are enjoy-
ing a vacation for if we had to go to school
the teachers would have to talk to a sleeping
class or perhaps they would be asleep too. Who
knows? ?
January 4-Ho hum!! It certainly was hard to
get up and go back to school. Only five more
months of it so that's one consolation.
l
January ll-Guess what? He could put his hand
in a hat and pull out a rabbit. VNAho?? Why,
didn't you hear the magician that was here?
The freshmen sat with their niouths open
during the performance. Perhaps the magician
hypnotized them ! I '
January 18-Advertisement-Wanteii: 700 eye-
openers for students of A. H. S. who are do-
ing without sleep in order to study for sem-
ester tests. CAI least most of them arel .
FEBRUARY l
February 2-Ground hog day. Tooi bad but it
looks like six more weeks of winter. Maybe
we'll get our snow yet. ,
February 9-Our last home game wasi played here
tonight with Lakeview. A number of our big
SENIORS were seen with the youingest mem-
bers of our student body, the freshmen. The
freshmen seem to have it this year.
i
February l2iThe girls these days have a rather
dejected look after reading "Gone With the
Wind". They realize that theyl haven't as
small a waist line as the heroine, Scarlet
O'Hara, whose waist was a perfect seventeen.
February 26-It was a play and what a play that
was given in general assembly today. Betty
Acker gave a good demonstration of her
talents.
MARCH A
l
March 2-No. you weren't dreaming. It was
really an earthquake. We even heard that one
of our Juniors ran and hid under his bed.
Goodness! Think what would have happened
to him had he been in California lduring one
of their earthquakes. W
March 10-By this time everybody getting so
good at signing the parent's namei on the re-
port cards that even the parents cain't tell the
difference, fwe hopej.
March 1,2-There was no gong in Major fLunnj
Blows' amateur hour because all our amateurs
were so good. Talent was discovered where
talent was not expected. THE Patil CWesley
Downerj Whiteman showed us how to
. went the fifty-three students for the National
Choral contest. Four whole days to have a
grand time! We imagine the hotel had a rush-
in' business with three other choirs besides
ours.
April 15-Margaret Powell left for Washington,
D.C. as a representative from Michigan to the
Continental Congress of the Daughters of the
American Revolution. We are all proud to
have an Adrian High School girl Cand espec-
ially Margaretj represent our state.
April 16-The James Hendrickson and Claire
Burce Co. of ten members entertained us with
two of Shakespeare's plays, "Macbeth" and
"Hamlet", They are well-known and expert
players in Shakespearean plays.
April 23-The annual Senior Play, "The Patsy",
was presented before a large and appreciative
audience in the Senior High auditorium. Ran-
dall Palmer. Nellie XVilliamson, Jane Peter-
son, Arlie Rogers. Franklin Russell, Charles
Chynoweth, Gwylla Claypool, Buell Andrus
and Louis Kottke covered themselves fand the
Senior Classj with glory.
MAY
May 7-Our last school party and Marian Hurl-
but and George Bennett were seen as usual
sitting on the side lines not dancing. Maybe
by next year when they are a little older they
will try to do a little steppin' with the rest.
May 13, 14, 15-These were three days which
meant something to two different groups. The
orchestra went to Columbus and the members
of "The Maple Leaf" went to Ann Arbor to
the M.I.P.A. Convention. It was a real holi-
day and enjoyed immensely by both groups.
May 21-A general assembly with "Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde". XVe suppose you have heard
of these two gentlemen, haven't you??
May 22-Have you ever been to Holland CMich-
iganj at tulip time? Well, you have missed
something if you haven't and any member
of the band will verify that. They went to
Holland for their state contest and were able
to enjoy the beautiful tulips.
