'Q , 1- .ifgs 3--45 Y ,4 ' I a '59 -,J xl. atkvv' x Ii' FWQTBALL Opening football practice of September 5th found twenty-seven can- didates reporting to Coach Cook. This group included only six members who had had previous football experience. From this nucleus the 1939 team was molded. Although the season was marred by defeats at the hands of Parma, Nyssa and Weiser Reserves, the victories over Wilder, two wins over Ontario Reserves, Halfway and a tie with Homedale gave us an even break for the season and a fine record for our first year of play. The season was climaxed with a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Halfway Wolves who, until they met Adrian, had posted 13 consecutive wins, in 1938 and 1939. A fine spirit prevailed on the squal and each game saw mtrked improvement in play. Letters were awarded nineteen men. They included: Claude Patterson. Wayne Piercy, Bob Gibson, Elbert Fretwell, ends: Oliver Freel, Glen Osborn, Morris Deffenbaugh, Joe Cram, tackles, Fred Boness. Leroy Parker, Elbert Hatch, Sam Pullen, guards, Norman Cram, Bob Eastman, centersg and Stewart Schweizer, Livingstone Larkin, Bud Notheis, Daniel Zamora and Don Garner, backs. Seniors include, Patterson, Fret- well, Boness, Eastman, N. Cram, Larkin and Zamora. These boys will be hard to replace in the 1940 team. Although several reserves failed to earn a letter they gained experi- ence and will battle for a place on the 1940 team. The reserves showed tine spirit in serving as scrimmage fodder for the varsity. The fine record of the team was for a large degree due to the caliber of the reserves. At the end of the season the squad elected Daniel Zamora honorary captain, and selected Bud Schweizer as the most valuable squad member. His name will appear on the trophy presented the school by the Eder Hardware Co. BASKETBALL Adrian High's first basketball season from the standpoint of games won was not impressive. However the 1940 hoopsters demonstrated an interest and enthusiasm that bodes well for future Adrian hoop seasons. Coach Cook took a bunch of green, inexperienced boys fmany of whom never before had even had a ball in their handsl a long way toward be- coming a good ball team. With most of the emphasis upon fundamentals the squad showed a marked improvem-lit from the time they played their first gan-e until they completed a hard 27 game schedule. The boys were only able to win from three teams, Prairie City, Fruitland and Vale. The peak of the season came with the Vale game. Catching the Snake River Valley League rhampions in a slump and overconfident the locals played their best ball game to win 26-24. Twelve boys made letters: Seniors-Patterson, Cram, Zamora, Miller: Junior:-Schweizer, Beebe, Woods, Timmerman, Tallmang Sophomores- Piercy: Freshmen-Hatch, Zesiger. The B squad had a more successful season although winning less than half their games Mainstays of this group were Pullen, Garner, Faso, Givens, Mitchell, Loftus and Parker.
