Let's Reflect . . .
Think back . . . perhaps as far back as
four years ago, or as recent as last year
. . . Remember the struggle and debat-
ing you went through, trying to choose
a college suited just for you. Maybe
you knew from the start that Adrian
College was the place for you. But why
Adrian College?
Was it the school spirit you saw dur-
ing your campus visit? Or maybe it
was the positive first impression you
got from a faculty member?

Consider the Memories . . .
After four years at Adrian College you'll think back to all the mem-
ories youghave to treasure from the college experience. Surely you will
remember the happy moments - your 4.0 G.P.A. the first semester of
your Freshman year 01, the meaningful relationships you've maintained,
the knowledge you gained while writing papers the night before they
were due, the fun you had staying up till early morning cramming for
finals, trips to the bar with friends . . .

But how about your career? Of course,
you want to be successful, and the best
way to achieve this goal is to challenge
yourself. Adrian Col1ege's faculty can
certainly help you here. If professors
don't help, you can always rely on your
academic advisor, the counseling staff,
the tutoring staff, or the chaplain and
Catholic ministers.

Homecoming 1987
Homecoming 1987 got off to an ex-
citing start on Monday with the opening
ceremony. Bill Carter as "Mr. Rogers"
was emcee for the big event. Karla Flaim
carried the ceremonial torch for Tri-
Sigma to officially open Homecoming
week. A tough panel of judges was there
to choose the best banner in the com-
petition. Then came the games on the
mall, events such as blowing bubble
gum, hula hooping, dress-undress and
tug-of-war. On Saturday the football
game kicked off with a win against Al-
ma, and the band performed an exciting
half time show. After the game, old
friends got together and had a good time
at the block party, where the winners of
the homecoming events QASA, TKEJ
were announced.

BOB GARNER
PRESENTS
MAGIC AT A.C.
This year the Student Activities Com-

Bob Garner for an entertaining evening
of magical wonders to the amazement of
Adrian College students. As in the past,
Mr. Garner began by entertaining stu-
dents during both lunch and dinner
mealtimes, piquing the curiosity of many
students. One question he left in their
minds was most likely, "How do you do
that?" Only the magician knows.

A.C. "BASHERS" RGCK THE NIGHT AWAY
During the 1987-88 school year,
dances on campus provided Adrian
College Students with lively social en-
tertainment. The Greeks provided the
campus with the annual Beach Bash.
Once again A.C. students had the op-
portunity to act out their summertime
fantasies in mid-january, and it was a
great success.
S.A.C. sponsored a romantic Val-
entine's Day dance which provided
campus couples with a multitude of
tender moments which will live in
their hearts forever. Music for this
dance was provided by the Rock
band, Caruso, whose sound only en-
hanced the mood.

The Bulldog defense puts the clamps on Dayton. Chris Davis looks for yardage against Ohio Northem Uni-
versity.
Tim Baechler looks to gain those extra yards.
The tough 1987 Adrian College Football team finished the
year with a strong record of 7-2. The "Dawgs" finished 4-1 in
the league for second place. The Bulldogs started the season in
strong fashion with three consecutive victories over non-
league opponents. The fourth game featured two of the top
ranked teams in the nation. The Bulldogs tangled with the
Flyers from Dayton at a jam packed Maple Stadium. Un-
fortunately, the good guys lost, 42-22.
League action started with Olivet the following week. The
defense played tough in a 22-3 victory. Homecoming and
Alma were next. This game proved to be the most exciting
game of the season with the Bulldogs gaining a last minute
victory 21-14. A victory over Albion set the stage for a cham-
pionship showdown with defending champion Hope College.
A National Play-off Berth was at stake for the Bulldogs. Once
again the roof caved in on Coach Labadie's warriors as the
Bulldogs came up flat. A victory over hopeless Kalamazoo was
the last saving grace for the 14 Bulldog seniors. This was the
third consecutive year the Bulldogs finished second in the
tough M.I.A.A. With a strong nucleus of retumers, the future of
the Bulldog football team appears to be solid.
The Bulldog defense was led by two first team all-league
selectionsp Bob Urban fdefensive line, and Keith Bluhm
Qdefensive backj. The offense had three first team all-league
players. Mike Scott foffensive linej, Wayne Roedel ffullbackj,
and Bruce Crosthwaite Qquarterbackj were honored.

The 1987 Adrian College soccer season could best be termed as a
leaming experience. A good crop of freshmen combined with up-
perclass leadership provided for some very exciting games. Close
defeats at home by Calvin College and nationally ranked Dennison
University demonstrated that the future is bright for Bulldog Soccer.
On the road, A.C. continued to show a tenacious effort, falling just
short of a win against Albion College Q3-2, and against tough Hope
College Q2-17. The team was well motivated by First year coach Hans
Berkhof. This former native of the Netherlands brought years of
personal experience to the feisty Bulldog squad, and it showed as
they continued to put forth a strong effort. The cream of this year's
crop was Chris Thornton. This Troy resident came into the attack
often from his defensive position to earn second team all-league
honors, the first freshman from Adrian to achieve such recognition.
Other freshmen making a strong contribution were Rob Suffredini
and Chip Carrick. These two gritty young players improved tre-
mendously as the season progressed to the point where both were
starting at the close of the season. Next year, the Bulldogs will need
the leadership of two time team MVP Iohn Connolly. Along with his
brother, Rick, Iohn did a commendable job of keeping opponents at
bay. With all the playing time that the younger players received, the
future looks very good for the Adrian College soccer team.

The 1987 Adrian College volleyball team had an up and
down season as they played tough against some very serious
competition. Led by co-captains Pam Harvitt and Olga Her-
nandez, the Bulldogs struggled through some hard games,
coming out on the losing end only after battling valiantly.
The season itself was highlighted by strong wins over Al-
bion, Alma, and Siena Heights. Although the shorter Bulldogs
consistently competed against much taller opposition, they
never quit or gave up on themselves, In addition to the lack of
height, the Bulldogs were a very youthful squad. There are
only two seniors leaving from the team that saw twelve un-
derclassmen receive varsity letters. Among those lettering were
four freshmen whose contribution was very valuable.
With all the youth on the team, the future looks bright for
the spikers as they prepare for the 1988 campaign.

The 1987 Cross-Country season promised to be one of the
best the Dawgs have had in years. Due to miscellaneous
injuries, the team was never at full strength and managed to
compile only a 2-4 dual meet record, but the Dawgs still
captured first place at the Olivet Invitational. The league meet,
held at Albion, was the highlight of the Bulldogs' season.
Finishing fourth and edging out Kalamazoo, Adrian ended on
an up note tied for fourth place.
The team was led by junior, co-captain Mark Diebold. He
placed 7th at the league meet and earned ALL-MIAA honors.
In addition, Mark placed 15th at the regional meet and was
voted Most Valuable Runner by the team. The team loses four
graduating seniors, Stephen Craw, Kerry Erickson, Dave Holt
and Mort Nace, The returning team will be led by co-captains
Mark Diebold and Brian Stolle along with returning lettermen
Randy Gates, Glenn Iudd and Pat O'Neill. The team looks to a
good recruiting class and a bright future.

Eighteen freshmen were brought in to fill in the rest of the

The 1987-88 basketball team managed a 13-11 overall
record and a third place 7-5 league record, including two
impressive victories over second place Calvin College.
It was a team effort led by senior Co-Captains Mark White
and David Kryz. White wrapped up a fine career with an
outstanding season. He became the second all-time leading
scorer C1454 points, and set a career assist mark C5151 as he
led the Dogs in scoring, assists, and steals. White also
became only the third Adrian cager to win the MIAA
Scoring Championship 124.31 The three-time Most Val-
uable Player gained first team All-MIAA honors. Senior
David Kryz earned his third varsity letter and was an in-
spirational leader throughout the year.
Super sophomore Brent Kelley was also instrumental in
the Bulldog attack as he led the team in three pointers and
was second in scoring. Kelley's effort earned him second-
team All-MIAA honors. Other starters included: sophomore
Daryl Dittmer who led the team in rebounds, sophomore
Tyrone Jeter, and outstanding freshman Charles Dixon who
was named honorable-mention ALL-MIAA. Coming off the
bench with great determination were sophomores Tom
Valko and Chad VanSickle.

The Adrian College baseball team was led by nine seni-
ors. These seniors blended well with the younger members
of the team to produce a well-balanced group.
The Bulldogs traveled to Alabama for Spring ball and
layed five tough teams. They returned with a 2-5 overall
ecord. After splitting with Defiance College, the Bulldogs
tarted MIAA play with a split with Alma. Adrian ended the
eason with a double header loss to Albion in a close
contest.
Coach Mike Duffy is looking forward to next year and a
lot of success for both the players and the team.

The women's softball team began the year with a very
young squad, consisting of six sophomores, 12 freshmen,
and a lot of questions. The young lady Dawgs responded
beyond anyone's expectations with an impressive 6-6 record
in the always tough MIAA.
The team was led by sophomore Kelly Baker who led the
league in batting, runs batted in, stolen bases, and tied for
homerun leader. Coach Falor also noted Shelley Schultz,
freshman pitcher, Lisa Scheid, freshman pitcher, Vikki
Peterson, freshman outfielder, and Dena Smith, freshman
outfielder, as other top performers.
Coach Falor listed Hope, Calvin, Alma, and Adrian as this
year's top teams. As for next year, she added, "Last year we
,. graduated six seniors. This year's freshmen took over,
picked up the slack well, and leave a fine nucleus for next
year's team with a legitimate shot for the league title."

The 1988 men's track team seemed to have
strengths in almost all the field events. Ac-
cording to Coach Scott Pethel, two members,
Rob Hanson and Rob Trimpe, were both fi- Q
nalists in the MIAA league, although unfor-
tunately, neither one placed.
In the field events, senior Tim Luch placed
first or second consistently in the discus event,
placing second in the conference meet. Coach
Pethel cites javelin throwers Matt McCrory
and David Morgan as members who improved
tremendously throughout the season. "The
distance runners were also a solid point for
us," he adds, namin Mark Diebold, Pat
O'Neill, and Brian StolTe as top distance run-
ners. In the middle distance runs, Coach fi
Pethel comments, "There is a solid future for
this event. The times were consistently com-
ing down through the season." , M
Glenn Iudd, Andy Surowiec and Randy '

As for next year's team, Coach Pethel says,
"We're only losing seniors Tim Luch and Don
Treadwell, and everyone else is either Qnowj a
sophmore or a freshman." With that many
returning runners, the men's track team ,gy .y
should be able to count on that experience as R

This year's women's track team put forth
a super effort considering the size of the
team. "Almost everyone was contributing,"
commented Coach Scott Pethel.
Senior Sue Higgins set a new school re-
cord in the 800 m. run with a time of 2:21.5,
and Heidi Olsen was an NCAA qualifier in
the high jump, her best performance being
5'61A". Both LouAnn Jessup, a two-time
All-American, and Rikki Carson attempted
to qualify.
"LouAnn, Heidi, and Rikki consistently
placed first, second, and third in the dual
meets," commented Coach Pethel. Other
team members performed well in the fol-
lowing events: Jennifer Valdez - 200 and

This year's men's tennis team faced a
difficult season, but the team players
didn't allow their tough competitors to
discourage them. According to coach
Amy Gilmartin, Adrian's win over Siena
Heights was a "big win" for the team.
"We had lost to Siena in a scrimmage, so
the win over them was a big one."
While all eight team members were
letter winners, Ieff Klingler was chosen
as the team's most valuable player. "He
won the most matches," commented
coach Gilmartin. In the doubles cate-
gory, Klingler and Pat Lawrence proved
to be the best players.
As for next year's season, coach
Gilmartin says, "We'll have a stronger 'G
team because we aren't losing anybody."
She hopes that all the members of this
year's team will be back along with some fy!-ss
promising newcomers.

Despite the 0-6 overall record for the
women's tennis team, the players' efforts
improved tremendously throughout the
season. According to tennis coach Amy
Gilmartin, many of the women lacked
experience in competitive matches, "and
they played some tough competitors."
Wendy Brinker was chosen as the
team's most valuable player, and coach
Gilmartin commented "Wendy and
Heidi fSponsellerj both won tough sin-
gles matches over Albion." She also add-
ed that Beth Felske played well until she
had to retire from a match with Siena as
a result of a foot injury.
A hopeful coach Gilmartin says that
with softball and track being offered at
the same time as tennis, it's difficult to
get many women players. However, she
sees the new Sports and Fitness Center
as a plus for the future of Adrian's wom-
en's tennis team.

Theta Chi also serves the community with
philanthropy projects such as the Alzhei-

IGMA
Here at Adrian College, Phi Kappa Sigma
has defined for itself an all-encompassing
goal: the growth of our fraternity combined
with the meaningful growth of its people. It
is through a wide range of activities that we
are challenged and enriched in nearly every
facet of college life. We encourage the
building of each other's individual char-
acter and take great pride in our diversity.
Our purpose is not to mold you into what
we consider acceptable, but rather enable
you to reach your potential for becoming a
well-rounded individual. We are a good
fraternity because good people belong.

CARGO HALL
The 1987-1988 year was a transition for
the staff and residents of Cargo Hall. For
the first time, the predominantly upperclass
had been occupied with a large number of
freshmen. Cargo had a pre-football game
picnic before the Dayton game that was
enjoyed by those who attended. This early
activity helped to build the strong com-
munity that maintained throughout the ac-
ademic year. Both the freshmen and the
upperclassmen enjoyed many community
programs, and made Cargo Hall a year to
remember for all its residents and staff.

Jarvis Hall received some major improve-
ments over the summer of 1987. A redec-
orated lobby, study rooms, bathrooms, and
hallways enhanced the unique structure of
the hall. Jarvis housed 120 residents both
male and female. Programs included shop-
ping trips, movie nights, Alcohol Aware-
ness Week, and other social and educa-
tional activities. The future looks bright for
Jarvis with possibilities for further reno-
vations. Overall, it is a fun place to live and
learn. After all, "It's a lot like home."
Thanks to all the Jarvis residents of 1987-
1988 for a terrific year!

Powell Hall houses approximately 95
students, most of whom are involved in a
variety of activities including sororities,
pom pons, cheerleading, clubs and sports
- both IMs and varsity. Many of the pro-
grams in Powell are socials like movie
nights, Pictionary, aerobics, and mixers.
The residents attend programs on alcohol,
stress, good nutrition, time management,
and others. ln March, we were very in-
volved in Men's and Women's Gender Is-
sues Week and hoped to involve the ma-
jority of other residents in the activities.
ESTES HALL
Estes Hall is a coeducational residence
living environment, providing housing and
programming for over 100 residents. 1987
marks the 30th anniversary of the construc-
tion of Estes Hall. Activities include the
annual festival with Iarvis Hall, the annual
Estes Thanksgiving, and intramurals. Spe-
cial groups that represent Estes Hall are the
Gators and the Brickers.

DEA S HALL
Deans Hall has gone through many
changes during the past year. Much needed
carpeting was laid throughout the study
rooms and basement. New furniture can
now be found in the lobby and study
rooms. The atmosphere in the hall is quite
energetic this year with programs such as
Steak Night, movie nights, and sporting
events. Much of the credit goes to the hard
work and performance of this year's Res-
idence Hall Staff. It was a great year for
everyone at Deans Hall.

Davis has had a tradition of being an
exciting place to live and this year is no
exception. Throughout the year, the res-
idents of Davis have been having fun. Some
of the hall activities included: Movie Mania,
Parents' Weekend, and Euchre 'til the sun
rises. As the Davis tradition continues, we
as alumni won't remember the hall itself,
but we will remember the people and fun
times we all had together.

Stevens Hall provided a home for 91 men
this year. The Residence Staff helped to
create a learning environment outside of
the classroom. With the largest number of
freshmen, the staff tried to make the move
to college a smoother one. Educational pro-
grams stressed decision of major, career
planning and alcohol awareness. Steven's,
along with Powell Hall, sponsored Men's
and Women's Week, educational issues for
the whole campus on the genders. The pool
table was constantly in use. Some of the
social programs were a hayride, Halloween
movie festival, spaghetti dinner and a pool
