Admiral William Shepherd Benson. U. S. Navy Admiral Benson was born in Macon, Georgia, on Sepfember 25, l855, and graduafed from fhe Naval Academy in l877. During his naval career he was appoinfed Chief of Naval Opera- fions wifh fhe ranlc of rear admiral when 'l'ha'l' office was creafed in l9l5, and was lafer commissioned admiral when fhal' accompanying ranlc for Chief of Naval Operafions was aufhorized in I9I6. Admiral Benson held fhis office unfil refired from acfive service on Sep- fember 25, l9l9. He was awarded fhe Disfinguished Service Medal by fhe Navy Deparfmenf for excepfional meriforious service in dufy of greaf responsibilify as Chief of Naval Opera- fions. ln addifion fo fhe Disfinguished Service Medal he received foreign decorafions as follows: Grand Cross Legion of Honor lFrenchl. Grand Cross Order Sf. Michael and Sf. George lBrifishl. Order Sf. Gregory, fhe Greaf lMilifary Class, Firsf Orderl by Pope Benedicf XV. Affer his refiremenf from acfive dufy, Admiral Benson served as chairman of fhe Unifed Sfafes Shipping Board, which office he held unfil l928.
