Clarke Hull Palmer House ADMIRAL BILLARD ACADEMY New London Connecficuf QT WILLIAM F. CARNEY We, the class of 1952, take great pride and pleasure in presenting the i952 Admiral to Mr. William F. Carney. We feel that his guidance and inspiration has had a definite influence on our lives here at Billard, both in the classroom and on the playing field. An athlete of the finest caliber himself, he has shown us what true sportsmanship really means in our daily life. His words, There is only a thin thread between success and failure, will always remain in our memories. We again would like to thank Mr. Carney and wish him success and happiness in the future. 2 Dedication of 7952 Admiral He Ioved boys and Bullard TAPS REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM T STROMBERG Unlted States Coast Guard Superlntendent Emeritus Admlral Bullard Academy CAPTAIN GEORGE E PETERSON United States Navy Former Dnsclplme Ofticer Admiral Bullard Academy 3 Q: - ff He was a loyal friend. . . EDMOND K. BROWN, JR. Company Commander U Gi KENNARD M PALFREY Sub Company Commander A COMPANY Clarke Hall, the mainstay of the battalion, is the home of the waiters, the Band and the hardest working company in the Admiral Billard Academy Cadet Corps. The fabulous 43 obsessed by the spirit of Clarke Hall have been striving for the entire year to bring home the colors. We will do this for Mr. Leon Clarke and his dream of a winning company. They already have to their credit the intra-company football competition and hold the lead in the formal inspection race. A Company had its birth in September as a group consisting mostly of new cadets, but was soon whipped into shape by Company Commander, Karl Brown, and Sub Company commander, Charles Momm. The Company suffered a loss at mid-years when Charlie Momm left for Kings Point. But his shoes were immediately tilled by Kennard Palfrey, who will continue to work for and with A Company until the Hnal gun. A Company promises to be a strong contender in the final race in June for the coveted Colors. X I '. 3-4 B COMPANY Palmer House, after having won the colors last year, is again one of the top contenders. They have a good record, and they have shouldered the difficult chores of academics with great ease. Aside from minor explosions in the Chemistry and Physics labs and the collapsing of the chimneys, Palmer House is a fine example of what 'B Company spirit can do. A hard-working, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky bunch of boys bound together by an immortal bond of good times and mutual ambitions is a portrait of the men of B Company. LT. FOOTBALL Co-Captains: Theodore Bergeron - Frank Granato Head Coach: Mr. John Cowley Assistant: Mr. Sal Amanti Managers: Robert Marcoux 81 George Forry The '51 edition of the Billard football team compiled a record of 2 wins and 2 losses. Coach Cawley and Amanti greeted their enthusiastic recruits early in September and molded them into a powerful unit which went on to a fair season. The team was aggressive and rough and their spirited play was praised by all. Their spectacular performances brought honor and glory for Billard for their hard fought games at Aquinas and Cheshire. Opening against New Britain High on Saturday, Oct. 19th the Blue and Gold gridders of Billard showed the power and the ability of a powerhouse. Driving for 3 quick touchdowns in the first period, the Billard team was not to be denied victory. The contest was highlighted by the performances of Billard's two great Co-Captains who shone both on offensive and defensive. Overpowered, but still courageously fighting Billard took their first setback of the season against strong Aquinas of Rochester, New York. After leading for 3 periods, they were finally worn down to the score of 33-12. Rebounding from the loss to Aquinas the Blue and Gold showed their superb offensive power by trouncing Milford Prep, 43-O. Billard's charging line shone defen- sively as they held the opposition to 43 yards fgained by rushingi. A strong Cheshire squad managed to hike a 25-13 victory over a stubborn Billard team. A battle to the end, and the Admirals fighting all the way, they were finally subdued by a powerful Cheshire club. Congratulations team, we were proud of you every minute. 38 f 1 rf mi' ' si 5' .wma in C, f COACH 81 CO-CAPTAINS Gronofo, Cowley, Bergeron. BASKETBALL T Coaches Cupello and Amanti issued first call for basketball practice late in November. Heading the list of candidates were many former high school greats. Lengthy workouts were held daily and the coaches finally had the boys groomed. for the lid lifter against a strong Westerly squad. They lost the opener but Coach Cuppello again molded together a unit which went on to win its next three games. At this point, the team was iolted by the loss of Head Coach Cuppello. Mr. Amanti then stepped into the helm and coached this great team to heights unknown in Billard basketball history. Compiling a record of 17-3 the Billard cagers earned themselves a berth in the Glen Falls Tournament which only a few of the best teams in the east get a chance at. Knocked out of the Glens Falls affair by Seton Hall, Billard came back the next week to win the Eastern Prep Private School Championship. Congratulations, fellas.
