Juruor Class Prophecy Mme Pattl, the celebrated fortune teller was to be at the Junlor Semor banquet on Thursday nlght And this was Thursday' All day long the school had been m an uproar and by four oclock we burst the bonds of re stralnt and poured yelling and howling rnto the street When evenmg came I eluded the eyes of all watchers and managed to secrete myself rn Mme Patti s tent It was an eerle place Mme Patti clothed rn a fantastlc eastern costume, Wh1Ch made her figure appear slnu ous and snakelrke half sat half recllned on a low seat just behind a brass stand on vshlch burned a strange taper This queer, Hlckerlng llght sent 1ts dancing beams flirting with the shadows llghlng up buts of grotesque lmagery, and Just touchlng the coral snake heads twlned ln Mme Pattl s dusky hair The air was laden wlth an orlental perfume that was so sweet and 1 avy that It seemed to steal away your senses b fore you were aware and to leaxe you in a state of bhssful seml consclousness Suddenly a step sounded Just rnslde the tent and Rose Storm stepped 1nto the circle of light Mme Patti s gown rustled with a furtlve, creepy sound like that of a snake steallng ox er damp leaves and the light caught and reflected 1tS dar mg greens and blues as she bent forward to study Rose s face For a mo ment she gazed lntently mto her eyes, then wlth a superb gesture she Hung out her Jevselled arm Go ' she crled Go' and take your place IH the world Sit ln the chair now occupled by Woodrow Wllsonl Show the world Wrthout a word Rose turned and passed out Next VIVIHU smiled over the vrslon which Mme Pattl showed her of herself, as a second Mary Prckford Then Emmy Lou burst into tears at the thought of belng a nice stout motherly Woman with a farmhouse and seven rosy faced blue eyed chlldren To Ethel Mme Pattl sang the pralses of a home 1n Montana For John she prophesied a great future 'ms an inventor Her volce sounded a blt tr mu'ous as she sought to convlnce Ruth Cofiin that she would some dav b an aesthetic dancer Nevertheless she managed to assure her and at last Ruth left only to be followed by Buck vsho declared that he knevn he never could learn to play a v1ol1n On that Thursday nrght rn that dlm tent I heard Lols row that she never would go to the poor house, and Dona d actually blushed when Mme Patti intimated that some day he would become celebrated in vaudevllle Pearl and Nellie seemed to be perfectly satlsfied when told that as old maids they would quarre over thelr cats and would curse one anofhers parrots South seemed to be a b1t downcast over the prospect of a llfe without VIVIBD for of course a Mary Plckford would have no time for home dutles but he brxghtened up llke everything when Mme Patti assurred hmm that Blanche would preside over hrs llttle bungalow Mme Pattl told Vera that she would break one man s heart and would figure ln severa' sensatlonal divorce cases She prophesied for Veda a brll hant career as a world famous plrlma donna Maggle was to become the vlllage g0SSlp With an alr of trlumph Mme Pattx whlspered ln th ears of Bill and Eieiuig lstorles of a wonderful courtshlp and an elopement that would startle o e L oyd listened with a knowing wlnk to the story of h1 filrtatzons and of a certaln mathematical lady who could play the game better than he In Glenn s ear she whispered the magic word Felt To Rutn Stephens she promised the honor of being the first woman xoter ln the L S and then with the promlse of becornmg a great writer ringing ln my ears and that strange perfume still clinging to my garments I passed out lnto the banquet hall and mlngled with the class of 19 who sw re seelng uslons of themse ves as the men and womenrof 26 G C ,, , ......
