1969 Cen-Trails Adams Central Community Schools Monroe, Indiana Volume 20 THE SOUNDS OF CENTRAL Schools are made up of many sounds. Halls contain the sounds of lockers slamming and friends discussing their assignments. Teachers lecturing fills the air. You hear chalk scratching on the board as mathe - matics students work a problem. There is the sound of a panel discussion of current events. Physical education classes have the sound of students relaxing. This year brought new sounds to Adams Central. These were the steady whir of air conditioners and the scraping of the new movable walls being shoved around to pro¬ vide for different class sizes . After-school activities also added their sounds. Students and fans alike roared with excitement and sobbed with grief at ballgames. Music echoed through the school after the games as students flocked to the sock hops. After-school also brought the sound of clubs meeting and bands and athletes practicing. These are " The Sounds of Central. The main function of the school is to teach, and teachers at A.C. presented the opportunities for students to learn. It is through their efforts, as well as those of students themselves, which make the educational process a success. The sounds of the classroom make up " The Sounds of Academics. " History Students Learn of Past The new lecture area provides comfortable seats for the students. How about one for Mr. Green? Mr. Hilbert used many different methods for making history come alive this year. Through visiting speakers, slides and films, weekly reports on outside reading, and of course, tests, students gained an awareness of world and local events of the past and present. U.S . History and World History classes concentrated their efforts on learning to link the events of the past with the policies and events of today ' s world. The famous Tom Garwood records another of his hit records. 16 Government Learns of Now Government Government students learned the many functions of the govern¬ ment. While learning this, they learned the cabinet members and learned the path a bill follows to become a law. Also much time was spent on a term paper. Round table discussions were everyday occurrances in Soc. 17 English English classes this year learned more about grammar and litera¬ ture, as well as about speaking before a group. Teachers kept stu¬ dents busy by assigning themes, grammar exercises, speeches, and stories throughout the year. In addition, skits and plays were acted out in class, while some students worked on I.S. getting a break from the usual classroom routine. Foreign Languages New labs at Adams Central enabled foreign language students to be¬ come more proficient in speaking their " adopted " language, just as grammar drills aided in writing them better. Under the guid¬ ance of Miss Williamson and Mrs. Banks, students learned more not only about the languages of Spain and France, but also about the history and cultures of these nations . Shakespeare Baffles English Classes; The photographer caught these " promising " y oung actors in a dramatic, tear-jerking scene from PYGMALION. 18 Spanish students listen eagerly as Barry Kolter gives them the gory details of a bull fight. Vocabularies Bother Language Pupils Mrs. Stucky helps students find a desired book by using the card catalog. 19 Students Explore Fields of Science and Kim and Shirley show the proper use of a slide rule. Corky and Kathy examine the geometric solids. Science Enabling the scientists to work at their own speed was one of the main benefits on A.C.’s new science labs. While biology and zoology students dissected everything from clams to sharks, the physics class did ex¬ periments and investigated a ripple tank. Botany, one of two new science courses this year, was divided between classwork and field trips. Chemistry students used their new lab and equipment for working problems, evaluating compounds, and lis¬ tening to the tapes which explained the fundamentals of chemistry. Math Whether it was for training for future jobs or for application to everyday problems, the math studied by Central students pro¬ vided much homework, but the desired re¬ sults . Students enrolled in general math, geometry, first-or-second-year algebra, or senior math struggled to learn the basic concepts of their course, if it meant con¬ structing similar triangles or graphing parabolic functions . Whatever the subject was, Central ' s mathematicians soon learned ways in which they could put their newfound knowledge to good use. 20 Math To Prepare for Tomorrow ' s Careers Sally Leyse, on the edge of her seat, is unhappy with the results of her spring balance. Dennis Light times the period of a pendulum and finds he has set a new world ' s record. 21 Ag Students Lear n by Doing David Fairchild can ' t seem to remember the name of some of the leaves. . i j Jjyj mm r KM . . The boys studied soils, animals, and feeding; they learned to prepare farm records and use the farm shop in ways that will benefit them. Mr. Zoll gives special help to some of his slowe r band students. Students Learn Fine Arts Sherry Schwartz shows how Art Class has helped her to stay inside the lines. 23 Preparing for their roles as housewives of the future was one of the objectives of home economics students at A.C. Part of the year was spent studying child care and some of the duties of being Mothers, including money management. Under the direction of Mrs. Stuckey, the girls studied sewing, making good use of their new facilities . They also had the use of more Kitchen space and new appliances for their many meal preparations . Home Ec. students make use of the new kitchens. Home Ec. Pupils Learn Cooking Rosie Braun keeps on sewing after stitching her fingers to the material. 24 Industrial Arts Work on Projects Randy and Vic use the lathes with ease. Both planning and executing plans were stressed in Industrial Arts classes. Designs were carried out until they be¬ came " the real thing " , and put on dis¬ play . Boys enrolled in Shop worked with welding and refinishing using their new equipment. Tom and Darrel work on their projects. 25 Business Pupils Prepare for Future As the rest of the class types on Don M. does away with his mistakes. Bev. shows the right way to change the tape. Business A.C. ' s Business curriculum continued to expand this year as more students enrolled in the business courses . Bookkeeping and General Business introduced Students to the business world and all the various rec¬ ords which must be kept. Two years of typing, as well as one of shorthand, are available to future members of the work¬ ing force. Business Sales and Business Law give further insight into the world of business by teaching selling tech¬ niques and the use of law in business. A chance for practical application of this knowledge is available to those on Co-Op when they attend school for a half-day and work for a half -day. 26 Phys. Ed. boys work on their ballet forms. Dave Smith is working on a form of his own. Athletes Train in Physical Ed. A.C. ' s Batman and Robin make another daring escape. 27 THE SOUND OF ORGANIZATIONS Many Central students attend extracurricu¬ lar activities such as club meetings. Here they discuss business of the club, enjoy parties, and occasionally listen to the mu¬ sic of a sock hop being sponsored by their club. Organizations add their own sound to " The Sounds of Central " and these are " The Sounds of Organizations " .
