Science and Math Classes Help Prepare Scientists Simple mathematics play an important role in everyday life. All calculations from bushels per acre to density per cubic centimeter must be made ac¬ curately . Students enrolled in general math., Algebra I, and Algebra II classes, plane and solid Geometry and trigonometry. These classes formed basis for future training or practical ap - plication. Factor combinations, volume, functions of logarithms and graphs were all presented to the students. Proving equations and proofs, graphing equations and searching for unknowns provided homework for six mathematics classes. Yes, Tim Soldner, corresponding parts of similar triangles are equal. idents Explore Foreign Customs and Cultures Buenos dias, Bonjour, and Hi! were heard in the halls of A.C. this year. To some, it may have been baffling, but the A.C. students seemed to know what they were saying. In the halls between classes, you could hear French and Spanish students frantically trying to memorize their vo¬ cabulary words for the day, or literature students reciting their Shakespeare. Mrs. Kirchoffer and Mrs. Stucky helped us in our native language, unrelentlessly drill¬ ing us on the parts of speech, word usage, and sentence structure. Our back¬ ground in English formed the basis for understanding the structure of a foreign language. Miss Williamson spoke to us in Spanish and expected to hear answers in Spanish. Slides on Spanish explorers were shown and students listened to tapes of conversations. Mrs. Kellog presented in¬ teresting facts on French life and cultures as well as teaching us to conjugate verbs and understand sentences. With these teachers to help us, we are well on our way to a mastery of several languages. Did you know that sound travels at the rate of 1087 ft. per sec.? This and other facts were used by AC ' s physics students. Heat, sound, illumination and energy were four main topics the class delved into. Is it possible that there is a fourth dimen¬ sion? What are the principles behind a rocket lift off? Why does a train whistle sound shriller as it approaches you? In¬ quisitive young minds voiced thought- provoking questions such as these in all of AC ' s science classes. Chemistry students memorized valances, and symbols, and tested their memories by identifying un¬ known elements. Biology students found themselves chasing prayi ng mantisses, lady bugs, and falling leaves. Class time was spent discussing biological organisms, genes, and dissecting specimens. 21
