Memories 1979 Adair Casey High School Adair, Jowa Sigktk edition. Volume VJJJ Seniors 7 Underclassmen 19 faculty 27 Sports 35 Activities junior High 73 Advertising 85 Mixed emotions were expressed by the Bombers as they carried the second place Class 1A trophy to the spectator section after a grueling game against Iowa City Regina. The theme for this year’s an- nual is “Memories.” The fond- est memory of the 1979 school year is the Bomber’s trip to the boy’s state basket- ball tournaments. The A-C boys were the class 1A run- ner-up winners, and the school brought home a sportsman- ship trophy. Memories there are all types of memories-but the best of all are the happy ones. Rem- ember-the A-C squad beating St. John’s Independence and Ackley-Geneva. Chuck Littler and Doug Schmeling making the all-toumamnet team. Think back to the boys run- ning a fast break, when Curt Jacobsen slam-dunked the ball and brought the fans to their feet. Also, remember the A-C fans in black and gold to represent the school, and the togetherness and loyalty of the fans to the Bombers. Try to recall the silence and suspense of the presentation of the sportsmanship award and that final game when we led Iowa City by 8 to 2. But, most of all remember that great group of A-C boys that made it all possible and the joy and excitement of playing at the “Big House.” But what would memories be without a few disappointments —those things that you just can’t put aside. Recall stand- ing in the long lines to get your next ticket ... and Kurt Cress turning his ankle and trying to play in the final game. Re- member the final loss of the season to Iowa City Regina, and the season coming to an end for the seniors. 3 For some there were mixed emotions of the tournament. Some were sad and some were happy don’t forget that Kurt Cress did score his final two points in the game against Iowa City Regina. And the Bombers did receive the runner-up trophy of the 1979 boy’s state basketball tournament. Upper left: Chuck Littler decides to go left rather than right against his A-G opponent. Lower left: A-C’s tough defense closes in on an A-G player. Above: A-G’s muscle did not slow down Doug Schtneling who shot over, underneath, around, in-between and through A-G’s defense ending up with a superb per- formance. a Memories JCigkt the Comers of My Mind The Way We Were Memories light the corners of my mind. Misty water color memories of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time rewritten every line? II we had the chance to do it all again, tell me, would we? Could we? Mem- ories may be beautiful and yet, what’s too painful to remember we simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter we will remember, whenever we remem- ber the way we were. Above left: Craig Lundy shoots cleanly around the A-G ball player. Above right: The Bombers are great jumpers as evidenced in this photo of Curt Jacobsen laying the ball over the rim for an easy two points. The yearbook staff would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill Littler and the ADAIR NLWS for all their help with this year’s annual. All the can- dids through page 12 and several others throughout the book were supplied by Bill. THANK YOU! 5 Memories Upper left: Merlin Phippen, “The Bomber Pilot.” Upper right: The Class 1A state runner-up trophy is proudly displayed. The students were nestled All snug on a bus In hopes that St. John’s Would not defeat us. And coach in his blazer And 1 in my cap Had just worried our brains To keep everyone on top. When out in the hall There rose such a clatter, We leaped from our chair To see what was the matter. Away to the window 1 flew like a flash, Tore open the shutter and threw up the sash. The sun on the crest of the old, dirty snow Gave a look of last winter to objects below. When what to my wondering eye should appear But a basketball team and the coach full of cheer; With Shorty as the driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment we'd be in the thick. He whistled and shouted and called them by name. Now Ho Ho, now Jake, Now Lundy and Duke, On Cress and Littler, On Fergie and Gus! To the back of the gym, To the length of the hall; Now hustle, out hustle, out hustle, out all!” As athletes before the big game must fly When they meet with a lough one. They never say die. So up to the hoops the athletes flew Until the score was one hundred and two!! And then, in a twinkling everyone knew The boys did their best Cause both towns came though. And 1 heard them exclaim As they drove out of sight, “What a victory we won in the fieldhouse that night!” -written before the Bombers made their trip to state Tammy Bates Terry Beattie Linda Bireline Jennifer Caltrider Darla Carstens Linda Chandler Eddie Chesnut . No. 2 in basketball, No. 1 in Sportsmanship (Reprinted courtesy of GUTHRIE CENTER GUTHRIAN) The heart is a miraculous organ. It supplies blood needed for life. It enables persons to perform outstanding feats. But at times, more than heart is needed. Such was the case for the Adair-Casey Bombers. They had heart. It kept them going in their battle for a state cham- pionship. It fed them throughout the season. It piloted them past four dif- ficult victories to reach the state tourn- ament. The Bombers were a team that played with heart. Heart was not enough in the final round of the State Tourna- ment. It was sufficient for the first half. Then it started to skip a beat to a superior and talented Iowa City Regina club. Adair-Casey gave it all they had. They finally ended up the second half, drain- ed emotionally and physically, from playing with all the heart they could muster the first 16 minutes of basket- ball. They overcame the absence of their senior scoring leader and rebounder in the semi-final game. They played with reckless abandon during the final two games. It was all heart. In the end, it carried them to a lofty perch other- wise unobtainable. But it could not compete by itself against Regina which had superior manpower, a huge height advantage and a team that was much more physical than the Bombers. Iowa X a Qotta Have Heart City is the class team, the prestigious team of Class A basketball, maybe even the finest in Iowa. The Bombers fell to that adversary as have 27 other foes and 82 of the past Adair-Casey is proud of its ball players, its substitutes, its coaches and its school. The entire county is proud of the Bombers and the effort which earned them the No. 2 team in Iowa Class A basketball. More than the number two rating is the pride people have toward a group of kids that gave it their best shot and failed only in the final score. This group of kids is an exceptional group ... all down the line from the starters to the kids who didn’t play but participated all year long. They have brought credit to all the community and this area with exempli- ary conduct on and off the playing floor. They are considerate, they are good students and they are polite. Even more interesting is the fact none have been involved with any problems with school officials or law enforce- ment authorities. We have followed these kids for several years. We know they are appreciative and we know they are high calibre kids-like so many in Guthrie County. They are being singled out only be- cause the spotlight has been focused on them in recent weeks and they have handled it well. They are mature enough and they will continue to handle their accomplishments well in the future. We can be proud of most all kids in county schools. A few may contami- nate the barrell or at least try. In most cases, the bad element is not successful. This was the case at Adair-Casey. Three years ago, Coach Glenn Ander- son was telling us about a group of future basketball players. He said they could be as talented a group as has ever been on any area basketball court. He added one big “if” ... if they do not become involved with another element, one that thrives on notoriety rather than accomplishments. He added, I hope these kids “continue on the right track and I think they will.” They did. Their accomplishments are not just in athletics. Off the court they are a good influence on the younger mem- bers of the squad and others in school associated with them. We salute the Bombers of 1979. We have followed them for several years. It was fun for us ... more enjoyable because of the quality type kids they are. We salute the school, the community and the fans. They have much to be proud of. Accomplishments are nice. The way the accomplishments become reality are remembered as much as the deed itself. The Bombers have shown a lot of class along the way that ended in disappointment for them but pride for them by fans and acquaintances. 72 Doug Armstrong Joe Brannen Michele Bruns Rick Buckner Kevin Caltrider Jerry Carstens Jim Dunkerson Lisa Elings Toni Faga Tim Foster Randy Gerdes Kolby Gress Chris Hoffman Veronica Immel Kristin Kilcoin Dennis Kopaska Gene Lehman Ed Lemke Kevin Miller Jane Nelsen Jeffrey Ocheltree Steven Oberholtz Earl Plagman Tom Ray!
