Besides teaching physical education, he coaches ju- nior high football, basketball, and track. He also sponsors the eighth grade class. Mr. Gress enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting, and gardening. Archery, volleyball, and tennis are just a few of the activities his classes participated in this year. Miss Sherry Schafer, above right, added flag football to the girls’ p.e. program this year. Miss Schafer received her B.S. degree from Drake. She coaches girls’junior high track and basketball. She also sponsors the cheerleaders and Pep Club. Hobbies include traveling and playing the guitar. She belongs to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. When asked what she thought she would be doing ten years from now, she said “teaching at a college level, travel- ing, or having a family.” If she wasn’t at A-C, she would like to be in Washington state where she could combine working with another interest—mountain climbing. 32 Mr. Harris is shown as he takes a break from early morning band practice. He obtained his Masters in music education from Vandercook College of Music, Chicago. Some of his interests are 1SEA delegate, dance band, and membership in the Iowa Bandmaster’s Association. Music Department Above, Ms. Cynthia Rhum, music instructor for grades K-12, is shown accompanying a choral group. She received her B.A. at Bethel College. Reading novels and horseback riding are two of her interests. The biggest problems in soci- ety, according to Ms. Rhum, are selfishness and materialism. If she could be somewhere besides A-C,she would like to be skiing in Colorado. Her favorite movie is “Star Wars”; favorite song, “My Sweet Lady”; favorite T.V. shows are “Logan’s Run” or “Family.” 33 Agricultural Department Mr. Ivan Vos, ag instructor, and FFA members attended the Farm Progress Show at Washington Iowa. Mr. Vos enjoys hunting and coin col lecting. He also serves as the sub-dis- trict FFA advisor. Mr. Dave Raak, shop, electricity, and drafting instructor, has been at A-C for three years. He received his B.S. degree from Westmar College. If Mr. Raak weren’t teaching at A-C, he would rather be in northwest Iowa. Ten years from now he sees himself doing something related to his field-but not teaching. The 50’s era is a favorite of Mr. Raak’s as can be seen by his favorite movie, “American Grafitti” and favorite T.V. show, “Happy Days.” Industrial Arts Department 35 Math Department Mr. Glenn Anderson serves as head boys’ basketball coach and athletic director. He earned his Master’s degree from Colorado College. In his spare time he goes hunting and fish- ing. He also works with CETA Summer Youth and is a mem- ber of Adair Commercial Club. Mr. Anderson likes the overall attitude of the majority of the A-C students. His favorite T.V. viewing is professional football. He is pictured lower right. Mr. Doug Myers, one of the newer additions to ACHS, is pictured below. He teaches geometry, Algebra II, general sci- ence, physics, and math analysis. His favorite pastime are scuba diving, golf, and tennis. Besides sponsoring the chess club, Mr. Norman Carlson teaches junior high science and math. Mr. Carlson received his B.S. at Upper Iowa College. Frog dissection and car races powered by homemade batteries are some of the interesting things his science class undertook. He enjoys hunting and fishing and is also a member of the Lions Club. The thing he likes best about A-C. is the spirit. He is pictured below. Basketball, track, and Science Club keep Mr. Dale Witt active. He received a BA in Biology at UNI. Mr. Witt thinks the biggest problem in society is the lack of discipline. He thinks the school is too lenient, but he likes students with good attitudes. Ten years from now he says he will still be single. His favorite movie is “Star Wars” and favorite T.V. show is “Mash.” He is pictured at the right. Science Department 37 Business Department Mr. Steve Beecher, pictured above, received his B.A. from UNI. He is the girls’ track, basketball, and softball coach. When asked what he thought was the biggest problem in soci- ety, he said, “lack of parental discipline.” His favorite things at A-C are the students and the community. Mrs. Bev Gustafson, pictured at the upper left, believes that the biggest problem in society is people who don’t have a purpose to their lives. The best thing about A-C to her is the friendly people. When asked what she would be doing ten years from now, she replied “Hoeing com.” If she weren’t at A-C, she would be somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Mr. Allyn Monaghan received his BA from NWMSU. He coaches base- ball, football, and basketball. He thinks the biggest problem in society is a need for leadership in a more positive direc- tion. He is pictured above. Social Sciences Mr. Thomas Queck, pictured above, teaches political science and history. Hobbies include biking and hunting. Mr. Queck’s favorite movie is “Ben Hur” and his favorite T.V. show is the “Muppets.” 39 New art teacher at A-C this year is Ms. Bast, shown above. She received her B.A. degree from Central College, Pella, Summa Cum Laude. Ms. Bast’s hobbies are painting, weaving, and art history. When asked where she would want to be if she wasn’t at A-C, Ms. Bast said, “in Mexico in graduate school.” Ten years from now she said she would still be teaching art. Ms. Bast’s favorite movie is “Funny Lady”; song, “Happy Man”; and T.V. show, “Switch.” Art Department 40 A microwave oven has been added to the Home Ec department, headed by Mrs. Doris Sturm. She received her B.A. degree at Simpson College. She sponsors the sophomore class. An- tiques, reading, and plays keep her busy; but, of course, she spends some time sewing. Her favorite movie is “Camelot” and her favorite T.V. show is “The To- night Show.” She thinks the biggest problem in society is the lack of re- spect for authority. If she could do anything she wanted, she would be traveling. Home Ec Department 41 Sponsoring debate, speech, and Spanish Club is Mr. Paul Burrow, shown below. He attended Drake University where he received his B.A. If he wasn’t here at A-C, he would like to be in Spain. In his spare time he is active in Iowa Foreign Language Association, American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages, and the National Historical Society. Mrs. Sharon Anderson, librarian, believes that the biggest problem in society is self discipline. Ten years from now, she said she will still be teaching. At the present she would love to be in London. What she likes best about A-C is the fact that it is small enough to give everyone a chance to participate in extracurricular activities. Her favorite movie is “Rocky.” Her favorite song, “You Light Up My Life”; favorite show 0,1 T.V., “Little House on the Prairie.” She is pictured lower right. Library and Spanish Departments English Dept. Mr. Ron Stormer has added a new course to the English department, “Mythology.” He received his B.A. from UNI. Hunting and spectator sports at- track the attention of Mr. Stafford. He received his B.S. at Peru State. Involvement in the Casey Women’s Study Club, Republican Women of Guthrie County, and judging speech contests keep Mrs. Evelyn Clark busy. She received her B.A. from UNI. One of the major problems of our society, according to Mrs. Clark, is the state of our economy. Mrs. Clark believes most of the students at A-C are responsible people who are growing rapidly into independent individuals. Someday Mrs. Clark hopes to travel to England. 43 Ms. Kay Bennett, learning disabilities teacher, received her B.S. degree at NWMSU. Carpet panels on the walls add a bright spot to her room. She believes the biggest problem in society is lack of honesty, followed closely by drugs and alcohol. If she wasn’t at A.C, she would most likely be work- ing in a home for the handicapped. Her hobbies are cooking, reading, and biking. Mr. Don Lohr, guidance counselor, is the sponsor of the junior high student council, assistant track coach, and NHS sponsor. He received his M.S. from NEMSU. His favorite T.V. program is “Starsky Hutch.” When asked what he liked best about A.C, he said, “the kids.” 44 Guidance and Learning Disabilities School Board Administration To the left, Mr. Dick Shockey, superintendent of schools, is pictured. After losing the first game, the Bombers bounced back to win the next five games-being very much in contention for the conference champ- ionship. The seventh game with Anita was an outstanding game. The Bomb- ers beat the Spartans 22-14. Leading the conference, the Bombers went to Earlham and were defeated. The re- maining games followed the same trend with defeats from O-M and Dcxfield. The Bombers main problem was lack of depth. The season ended with 25 players on the squad. Some players were forced to learn three or four pos- itions to make it through the season. Some of the outstanding plays were Matt Parker’s interception at Guthrie Center, Mike Brannen’s touch- down pass to JeffStetzel in the B-F game, and Steve Ferguson’s TD pass to David Murphy. so Bombers Lack Depth; Finish Season 5-4 Records Broken Longest completed touchdown pass: 84 yards Steve Ferguson, Jeff Stetzel Single game tackles: 23 Chem Elings Career total tackles: 337 Matt Parker The Bombers biggest vic- tory was over Anita.
