1970 BOMBER STAFF Editors Layout Photo Editor Marie Condon and John Mowry Jana Elgin Rozanne Gehrtz Copy Editors Jeanne Hobson and Cindy Young Finance Duane Utts, Vicki Corrigan, and Marijane Cline Advisor Mr. Darrell E. Fees THE BOMBER FOREWORD Modular scheduling brought a new look to A-C in 1969-70. To meet this modern in- novation, the 1970 BOMBER presents its own new and different look. Staff interest combined with the leader- ship of Mr. Darrell Fees contributed im- measurably to the annual's progress. An additional aid was the utilization of our own darkroom where pictures taken by our photographers could be developed im- mediately and then either prepared for placement in the annual or rescheduled for another take , thus enabling us to get better pictures for our readers. Now, after long hours of planning, replan- ning, and arranging, the BOMBER has reached completion. In the years to fol- low, we hope this yearbook will allow you to re-enter the world of Adair-Casey, 1970. Wall, R. Wedemeyer, V. Corrigan, M. Cline, J. Mowry, Amidst a tumult of renovation and financial woes emerged the 1970 BOMBER. Few phases of the yearbook's production escaped remodeling. The first change involved its status in the school curriculum. Abolished was the class that had pro- duced the annual. Instead, this activity became extracurricular. Many students responded to the alteration as the largest staff ever appeared to work on the BOMBER. To attain greatest efficiency, staffers joined one of several departments—layout, photography, ad- vertising and finances, copy writing, and classes and activities. Mr. Darrell Fees started his career as BOMBER advisor with the tremendous task of heading all groups. Money far outdistanced any challenger as the yearbook's most serious problem. Strict money management and life-saving donations allowed the BOMBER to pull through, however, and add new and necessary equipment. Surrounded by pictures and plans, layout editor Jana Elgin designed page layouts. A-C DANCE BAND AND GIRLS GLEE FRONT ROW: M. Daggett, D. Heater, C. Dill, E. Farley, D. Wortman, B. Farley, V. Fall productions at Adair-Casey consisted of three one-act plays of varying content. THE DENOUE- MENT was an example of the avant-garde form of theatrical experience dealing with complex symbols of greed and ultimate destruction. In a lighter vein, THE DEATH AND LIFE OF THE CODE OF THE WEST (a satire on Western honor) presented the quintessence of the Old West, a West that never really existed. Lastly, in the lightest vein of all, A. A. Milne's THE UGLY DUCKLING told the age- old tale of the beautiful young princess and her knight in shining armor. The casts were headed by Alice Lewellen, Marcel- la Fagan, Marty Fisher, Lonnie Christoffersen, and Chris Schafer in THE DENOUEMENT; Steve Petty, Pam Peterson, John Mowry, Stan Kading, Bob Fay, and Margie Miller in SNEAKY FITCH; and Donnie Wall, Judy Ernst, Jeanna Schirm, and Sharon Wheatley in THE UGLY DUCKLING. Sheriff Oglesby (John Mowry) meets Sneaky Fitch (Steve Petty) in the deadly card game of THE DEATH AND LIFE OF THE CODE OF THE WEST. And they FISHED me out of the moat, explains the Prince (Donnie Wall) to the Princess (Judy Ernst) in the November presentation of THE UGLY DUCKLING. 48 A-C PRESENTS U’L ABNER With a gun at his neck, General Bulmoose (Todd Morris) seems to be trying to ex- plain the KO'd body of Li'l Abner (Terry Morris). Surrounding Abner are (from left to right) Stan Kading, Teresa Betts, Lonnie Christoffersen, Cindy Young, Vicki Dewitt, Linda Wahe, and John Reha. LI'L ABNER culminated the thespian activities of '69-'70. Using dancers was the newest ad- dition to the annual event. Re-creating the characters of A1 Capp were Terry Morris in the title role, Linda Wahe as Daisy Mae, Lynn Lehman as Marryin' Sam, Stan Kading as Earthquake McGoon, and Teresa Betts and Lonnie Christoffersen as Mammy and Pappy Yokum. Directors were Mr. Kenneth Berg- quist, W. J. Kramer, and Orville Harris. Choreography was executed by Mr. Darrell Fees. Stupefyin' Jones made quite an impression on wife Linda Kerns as well as wives Alice Lewellen, Jeanna Schirm, and Julie Glenn. At left, a heartsick Daisy Mae tells Abner that it’s Namely You she is interested in, despite the fact that he never catches her in the Sadie Hawkins Day race. 49 NINTH AND TENTH GRADE CHORUS BOTTOM ROW: (left to right): T. The dynamic trio for girls basketball were Jeanne Hubbard, Debra Kilcoin, and Alice Lewellen. Posing briefly before track practice are managers Kevin Zimmer- line, Mark Roccholz, and Alan Farnsworth. Also posing are coaches Milt Berg and Barry Monaghan. Resting from locker duties are girls track managers Karol Raper, Ronda Carl, and Darnell Heater. 59 Is Carolyn kicking the habit? I think it's coming back again. A IS FOR ACTION This pose is killing me. En garde! Outa my way, I'm cornin' through. Ooo—the basket is so far away. 60 Hey—where is the ball, anyhow? A new event at A-C this year was the girls 10 flight shuttle hurdle relay, periormed in 1:13.5. A-C hurdlers are Pam Peterson, Jane Miller, Barb Plagman, Mary Ann Anderson, and Kristy Hoehns. Shattering the old A-C discus mark of 145' 11 set by Duane Avey in 1964 was John Griffith with a toss of over 154 feet. Setting records in two events each were track stars Linda Shell and Carolyn Wedemeyer. Linda threw the discus 100 10 and the shot 34' 6 3 4 . Times of 11.5 and 26.1 gave Carolyn records in the 100 yd. dash and the 220 yard dash. 63 GUESTS ENLIVEN SCHOOL DAY WITH VARIED TOPICS A1 Bell 1969-70 was a below average year for assemblies and convocations outside of the awards programs and pep rallies. There were, though, several guests who appeared at A-C this year. Paying his annual visit to A-C was A1 Bell. This year's production was complete with films, properties and notes on Africa. Physical education classes spent several cycles on free floor ex- ercise as part of their gymnastics study. Guest teacher for these classes was Janet Fees (1968 high school free floor champion in Virginia). Civil strife understanding penetrated the Race Relations class as guest speaker Nolden Gentry, an attorney from Des Moines, spoke on discrimination and segregation from the standpoint of the Neg- Nolden Gentry ro. The final assembly for the year was a tour concert performance of the Bridgewater-Fontanelle concert and dance bands play- ing concert and contemporary selections. 64 Marcella dag an J-C Kep resent at ice Carolyn Wedemeyer yancij Zimmer J-C Relays Que Candidate Debbie Cattail : Bund Queen - NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS Following the traditional initiation ceremony, novices are congratulated by senior members. President Dave Slayton spoke for the senior class in thanking the juniors. Reading the class prophecy were Barb Carney and Terry Morris. Earlier, Bob Fay and Dennis Beer presented the class will. Master of Ceremonies Ray Car- ritt added a humorous touch to the traditional program. Sights, sounds and delay characterized FHE. Mel Wishman spoke for continued progress. 71 JUNIOR HIGH OFFERS VARIED ACTIVITIES The spring vocal concert, under the direction of W. J. Kramer, offered junior high students an opportunity to show how well they could interpret contemporary vocal selections. Above are Julie Anderson, Joni Michael, Lyle Caltrider, Doug Bassett, Jim Emgarten, Kevin Heckman, Christy Ruppert, Bonny Coop- er, Marilyn Twidt, and Kathy Rochholz. In the background can be seen Jewel Noland and Carol Sullins. STUDENT COUNCIL. Percussion department members Mike Bruns and Brad Rumple stay cool during a number performed at the spring band concert. BOOK FAIR HONORS LIBRARY WEEK As part of National Library Week, the Library Club sponsored its annual Book Fair. It is at this time that students, faculty, and parents are offered a more varied selection of literary materials than can be afforded by the newly formed bookstore. Proceeds are used to further the activities of the Library Club. In the above picture, salesgirls Margie Miller and Marilyn Condon recommend selections to prospective buyers. Let us not look back in anger, not forward in fear, but around in aware- ness. The class motto provided inspiration for commencement speak- ers who look toward the future and around in awareness. Co-valedic- torian Marie Condon stressed duty, honor, and country, while Marilyn Condon, also valedictorian, placed emphasis on individualism. Marty Fisher fashioned the Gettysburg Address to the present, and Anita Hoehns discussed the challenge fac- ing the senior.
