A really good school board mem- ber is broadminded and open-minded. He is willing to give substantial blocks of time to discharge his responsibilities as a school board member. He is willing to give his devotion to a cause and a program of activities that is directed by someone other than himself, namely, the superintendent of schools. . . . A good school board member has a sense of humor and a capacity for human understanding . . . He knows that his interest in the welfare of school employees is one of the best ways to make sure that the employees are de- voted to the children . . . The good school board member likes people and sees many of them . . . He believes that the future welfare of the community is closely tied up with the success of the school system . . .
