ACADIA gained the distinction of being the first ship of her class to accomplish the unusual task of cross deck transfers of Tomahawk missiles between vertical launch system equipped combatants. ln early December 1990, ACADIA moved a total of thirty-one missiles between USS FIFE and USS O'BRIEN. ln mid February, 1991, in the midst of Operation Desert Storm, ACADIA's Weapons Division recorded a first by rearming USS LEFTWICH and USS PAUL F. FOSTER with Tomahawks. In early March, ACADIA was a major participant in the com- plete ammunition off-load of the USS PRINCETON involving hundreds of missiles and thou- sands of 5" projectiles, as well as, numerous other small cal- iber ordnance. fft fl' , If you insist on sticking to I 1 l your guns in any situation, X i ,kg be sure they are loaded. - f 0 c"53-:-f- i , Anonymous . All are handled by the HT's tHull Techniciansl. DC's qDamage Controlmenl keep the ship's firefighting equipment ready for any emergency. Also, during the deploy- ment, the division completely remod- eled Damage Control Central and the Chief Engineer's office. All of these jobs took planning and lots of hard work on everyone's part. While the ship was on its way to the Persian Gulf and while there, Ft Division was instrumental in issuing CPO suits to the crew, along with the MCU-2P gas masks. Finding storage and making sure everyone received the protective gear kept the division busy for several weeks. All in all, any trouble call submitted to DC Central relating to plumbing on board is fixed by Engineering Fl Division. In addition, ACADIA's fire- fighting abilities are greatly enhanced by the division's professionalism, know edge, and hard work. fftia . - I 4 'V IQ .,g ' 'QQ-34, - E M . g xx.-I ,l Dccivi rsw J. o. Providing repairs, technical support and services to over 110 fleet and joint task force commands in the Persian Gulf, we reaffirmed our repu- tation as the finest afloat Intermediate Maintenance Activity. Once again ACADIA has qualified for the COM- NAVSURFPAC REPAIR "R" Department Excellence Award. . When the USS IWO JIMA experi- enced its tragic fireroom main steam valve casualty, the Repair Department completed over 170 repairs rendering l the IWO JIMA fully operational within four weeks. ACADIA performed emer- gency repairs tothe collision damaged USS HARRY W. HILL, enabling the destroyer to return to action in three days. Throughout the conflict, we sup- ported Canadian, British, Argentine, Kuwaiti, Spanish, and Dutch ships. This included the design and fabrica- tion of a helo control station for the Kuwaiti naval vessel to enable allied flight operations. CAUGHT UP IN HISTORY A TIME AND PLACE THAT WILL BE REIVIENIBERED BY ALL The August 2nd invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein placed a cold finger of fear on the pulse of a world which had just recently rejoiced at the unification of East and West Germany. One very real wall had come tumbling down, inspiring an optimism for universal peace that was prematurely overshadowed by the rumblings in the' Middle East. Even as "glasnost" was celebrated, the tension in the Persian Gulf escalated, creating a "wall" of hostility that segregated its people and cultivated a climate con- ducive to armed conflict. When word of the aggression reached USS ACADIA, the Captain and crew were inport Seattle for the 1990 Seattle Seafair. Immediately, the plea- sure of the visit became shrouded in apprehension. As the ship pulled up to the pier in San Diego, the crew HAH ggi? we wifi? QE' allr- -QMBJA -WP' , wi unpacked and returned to their families, unaware that they were soon to be caught in a revolving door that would lead them to hastily repack and plan for an unexpected early deployment. Just a few days after the return trip from Seattle, ACADIA received official word that she had three weeks to pre- pare for deployment in support of "Operation Desert Shield." Originally scheduled for a Western Pacific Cruise in early January, ACADIA made hurried preparations, both operationally for the ship, and personally for the crew. ACADIA rallied her forces and worked around the clock, compressing three months of work and preparation into a few scant weeks. The Supply Department alone ordered, received and stowed over 1000 pallets of material. The crew made monumental sacrifices, often working into the night to ready the ship, forfeiting the time normal- ly spent with family and the 1001 details that usu- ally accompany a long absence. Although U.S. pres- ence already existed in the Gulf, ACADIA was the first ship to leave San Diego whose primary mis- sion was to assist the fleet in which might possi- bly escalate into a global wartime situation. Armed with this knowledge, and sober with the realization , that danger loomed ahead, the fare wells were fraught with emotion and the tears in parting were for more than the long separation that lay ahead. For the first three months, ACA- DIA was the only tender on station, bearing the repair burden alone. After arrival in the Gulf of Oman, in early October, ACADIA spent the remain- der of the year transiting the Straits oi Hormuz between Al Fujairah and Bahrain offering assistance to all. The Repair Department complet- ed 9069 IMA repair jobs, including repairs on USS IWO JIMA following a catastrophic main steam valve casual- ty. ACADIA was also tasked by COMIDEAST FORCE to design, plan and execute the fabrication of a hGl0 control station for Kuwait navel vessel SAWAHIL, and upon the request of COMNAVLOGSUPFOB provided a four-man tiger team to render techni- cal assistance in repairing the forward deployed TSO-108 Nl Early Wafnlng Detection and Communications Mobile Vans in Saudi Arabia. 1 -1 -N 4 15 January deadline for with- Asjlzom Kuwait approached with draw n of peaceful intervention, ACA- Hogg red off the coast of the h . me Znfirag Emirates and waited with breath for her call to duty in the ' Gulf War. Peyirlsgn the cease fire was official, the short but terrifying conflict ended, ASADIA made her way to Jeber Ali where she became the first rr' of her class to assist in the cross- jjefk transfers of Tomahawk missiles between vertical launch system equipped combatants. ACADIA again recorded a first by re-arming USS LEFTWICH and USS PAUL F. FOS- TER with fresh Tomahawk missiles and in early March reloaded the USS FIFE with Tomahawks and was a major participant in the complete ammunition offload of the mine-dam- aged USS PRINCETON involving hundreds of missiles and thousands of 5" projectiles, as well as other more Crew members standing watch in the Gulf QFUR THE FIRST AHREE MONTHS, CADIA wAs THE ON'-Y TENDER CN 4121, Yb- r 5 .. . r ,, V, 1,54 y Y V-,N .- 1-.iq-. ,,r',rr.,,-ig:.-g.,g5t:1,1,3 T. - 'V V.
