Our Holy Father loves youth He loves them to such a degree that he

Th1s promrse was made not only to the youth of Rome but to all who

We at Lauralton have heard our Holy Father s promrse and we w1sh very

SIUCC educatlon IS a socral and not merely an rndrvrdual act1v1ty our

SODALITY
The Sodality of Our Lady, adiliated with the Roman Prima Primaria, aims to foster
in its members an ardent devotion, reverence and filial love for the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Here at Lauralton, our Sodality holds weekly spiritual meetings. The Apostolic, Eucha-
ristic, Marian, and Publicity Committees alternately take charge of these meetings.
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who wish to join the Sodality enter a probationary
period during which they are obliged to learn the rules of the Sodality and study the
"way of lifen they plan to take on. This "way of lifel' is the Sodalist's first step to her
future life with "jesus through Mary." From the moment of their admission to proba-
tion, the aspirants share in the privileges, indulgences, and other spiritual graces granted
to Sodalists.
Various projects for the year included: spreading devotion to the family rosary,
keeping "Christ in Christmas," presenting an assembly commemorating the "Church in
Silence" and sponsoring a Catholic literature drive. The annual May crowning climaxed
the year's activities.

TARCISIANS
Every girl at Lauralton is a member of the League of the Tarcisians. We, as apostles
of the Social Reign of the Sacred Heart, strive to bring our school and homes closer to
the Heart of Jesus by becoming closer to Him ourselves.
Each -day as a part of our morning prayers, we renew our consecration to His Sacred
Heart and invoke His aid through aspirations at the beginning of each class. To further
extend this devotion, at the beginning of each year all classes enthrone the Sacred Heart
in the chapel and in each home room. Each class spends half an hour of adoration before
the Blessed Sacrament once a month.
These customs, as well as the monthly renewal of the Act of Consecration to the
Sacred Heart, show that we Lauralton girls are proud to be members of an organization
which is so pleasing to His Sacred Heart.
We offer Thee our prayer . . . our work . . .

MISSIONS
Lauralton's Mission Organization is actively aware of the needs of the Missions and
it takes definite steps to alleviate these needs. By contributing monthly dues, every Laural-
ton girl is able to provide her bit for the missions. Mission Day is always the organiza-
tion's biggest and most profitable project of the year. This year, for the first time, we
were able to include in our endeavors our own Mercy Mission, recently established at
Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Under Sister Elvira's able direction, cancelled stamps are saved, clothing is collected
and packed, and financial aid is allocated through the Society for the Propagation of the
Faith.
This society sends an enthusiastic expression of gratitude: "How shall I begin! If I
should try to tell you how grateful I am, this page would be filled with 'Thank you.' "
From a missionary in Japan, we learn: "Everyone was so happy, and I always ask
them to pray for you and our many friends in the United States who are missionaries in
keeping us alivef'
A priest from a Negro mission in Georgia writes, "God is pleased for clothing His
little ones and supporting His missions. Your thoughtful contribution is a great help to
us, for without your help we could do nothing."
We could not resist this gentle appeal from a Maryknoll sister: "Our new school
under construction in Guatemala is a tremendous undertaking and we need your prayers
that God will grant us the grace to plan it wisely, and that somehow the money will be
supplied to meet our great financial needs."
These are but a few of the many gratifying messages received in acknowledgment
of help from the Missions. Together with prayers and sacrifice we are able to serve God
through His children, our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

STUDENT COUNCIL
Every Monday, in a closed meeting of Lauralton Hall's Student Council, a small
group of the Council's Officers and Representatives meet and make the ideas of the stu-
dents official.
"May we have a pencil sharpener?" asks one homeroom. Another suggests that the
Council try sponsoring some new clubs at school. The group discusses every question that
comes up, and upon reaching a decision with the principal, makes it known to the school
through weekly reports.
So works the Student Government Association behind the scenes. Celebrating its
fifth birthday this year, Student Government can look back on five years of achievement,
which have earned for it the distinction of becoming one of Lauralton's most important
organizations.
The Student Council, which consists of four officers and a representative from each
homeroom, acts as a mouthpiece for the individual student. Representatives especially,
who receive most of the students' requests, must be on their toes for any animadversion.
They are faced with such statements as "The soap in the dispenser in the lavies is too
weaku and "Why can't the Student Council give us a longer vacation?"
Open meetings of the Council are held every month, where each girl has the oppor-
tunity of seeing her government in action. Any member of the student body is free at
these meetings to offer constructive criticism or solutions for whatever problems may
exist in the school. The final open meeting of the year is traditionally devoted to the
inauguration of the Student Council Officers for the following year.
Activities of the Student Council include the enforcement of the rules found in the
Handbook, an annual dance, "Cupid's Capers," and an active publicity committee for all
school affairs.
Here at Lauralton we can say that the Student Government is truly a government of
the students, by the students, and, most especially, for the students.

THE LIBRARY
"Seat of Wisdom, all these rows and rows of books share the Truth with thee" is
the aspiration and the inspiration of the Library Club of Lauralton. Under the guidance
of Mary, Our Lady of Letters, the club publishes The Reading Lamp, a special newspaper
which helps to keep the faculty and the students informed of the various library activi-
ties. Included in this paper are informative reviews and the list of newly-acquired books.
The library is a gold-mine when we have "digging" to do. It is here one finds
seniors earnestly poring through scientific periodicals for "chem cards,', or gathering
material for oral reports in Englishg here the-juniors do research for biology projects. The
sophomores investigate the life and times of Julius Caesar, and the freshmen discover
interesting facts in World History.
But research for assignments is not the only reason that students frequent the library,
for the "rows and rows of books" also offer material for relaxation and enjoyment.

HIGHLIGHTS
The staffs of Highlights, the official news publication of Lauralton Hall, by main-
taining journalistic standards, aim to uphold Christian principles through their editorials,
news coverage, and features. Their efforts to attain perfection have once again gained an
All-Catholic award, annually given to best Catholic school papers by the National Catholic
Press Association.
Higbliglm, through the combined efforts of the news, feature, sports, copy and
makeup, art, circulation and exchange, typing, picture and advertising staffs, is published
four times yearly. Each year staff appointments are eagerly sought by seniors, juniors,
sophomores, and freshmen. The appointments are made each fall after the previous
springis applicants are considered on the basis of interest, ability, and responsibility.
Covering everything from spiritual counsel to the latest records, from club news to
"Corn Patch," the paper is a source of enjoyment and interest to all its readers.

THE LAURALTON
Deadlines and worries are all behind us as proudly we oHer you the finished product,
The LAURALTON '58,
Captions, write-ups and re-writes were the problem children the Literary Staff had
to cope with before the copy became sufficiently manageable for publication. The Busi-
ness Staff Csee page 1025, as they tuck away the extra ad blanks and straighten out the
accounts, remember the many persuasive tactics they had to employ to collect ads and
sell yearbooks. Cover design, layouts, dividers and color - all are now realities to the Art
Staff. The Typing Staff, who clicked off the copy which finally made the grade, still groan
when they recall the often undecipherable penmanship of the Literary Staff.
. We treasure the experience of getting the LAURALTON ready. We hope the com-
pleted book will bring you as much fun as the book-in-preparation brought us. If in
later years The LAURALTON recaptures for you a pleasant memory, if it recalls a dear
friend, or renews a bright hope, then we do not regret the "headaches," the panicky
moments, the pressure of time under which we labored until we finally emerged to meet
the last deadline.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Here at Lauralton, extensive opportunities to enjoy the beauties of music are made
available through Choral Clubs, Lauralettes, Theory classes, Liturgical music, and private
piano and voice instructions.
The Choral Club is open to all students. Through practice meetings, the members
grow in singing skill and music appreciation. During the year the Club sponsors a Christ-
mas program, a trip to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and a spring concert.
The Lauralettes are a group of girls from the Senior Choral Club who have a talent
and desire for harmonizing in a small group.
The Theory Course, offered only to freshmen, is a general study of all forms of
music, which aims to bring out the aesthetic value so that each girl may find the kind she
enjoys most. Liturgical Music, the study and singing of church music, is under the direc-
tion of Sister Agnes Marie.
Private instruction is available to girls desiring a more intense course in either voice
or piano.

DRAMATIC CLUB
Formerly "The Thespians," "Our Lady's jesters" sponsored dramatic activities for
1957-58 with Virginia Boyd serving as president and Sister Peter Marie acting as adviser.
The Club is divided into three departments: acting, staging, and costuming. Each
fall, interested sophomores and juniors enter on a probationary period. Requisitions for
membership are talent, ability, interest, and willingness to devote time.
Yearly activities include Father-Daughter Night, a Hallowe'en party brewed for
freshmen and their dads, and a Christmas pageant offered to the public to propagate the
true meaning of Christmas. The final activity is the production of a spring play for stu-
dents and the public.
"Footlights,' the Club's mimeographed newspaper, edited by Roberta Gallagher, is
published periodically featuring news of Jesters' activities. Secular entertainments such
as popular Broadway shows, plays and movies are also reviewed by the members of the
Club.

DEBATING CLUB
To foster the growth of an articulate Catholic laity is the
primary purpose of the Debating Club at Lauralton Hall.
The year opened with the adoption of a new constitution
which embodies the true spirit of Catholic forensics. Bi-
weekly meetings are conducted in parliamentary fashion.
Some of the vital topics discussed at these meetings include
the success of the United Nations and the outlaw of the
Communist Party. A special group prepares the debate on
the topic for the year.

SPANISH CLUBS
The Spanish Clubs at Lauralton fill that special need for
a broader knowledge of Spain - its customs and its people.
Clubs are formed in different classrooms where students
are interested, and meetings are held during class time once
a month. Some of the Club's varied activities include the
singing of Spanish songs, the presenting of plays and films,
and the playing of Spanish games. Not only does the Span-
ish Club give pleasure, but also it affords the novice at
Spanish an opportunity to enrich her vocabulary and to
further comprehension through conversation.
OFFICERS: Carol Ugolik, Secretary, Betty Anne Turco, President.
FRENCH CLUB
Those interested in "la langue francaise" have ample op-
portunity to supplement class activities through the French
Club. The aim of the club is to enrich the cultural back-
ground of its members and to offer further occasions for
aural'oral practice in the foreign tongue. Monthly meetqngs
are held after school once a month for juniors and seniors
interested in French. French songs, folk dances, plays,
games, and records all help to stimulate interest in and
enjoyment of the language.
OFFICERS: Judi Perisky, Tteasurerg Martha Sullivan, Vice-Pres-
identg Cathy McGee, Secretary, Pat Dargon, President.
LATIN CLUB
A Latin fashion show, a play based on a classical theme,
and a Roman banquet - all are activities enjoyed by the
members of Lauralton Hall's two Latin Clubs.
The junior group consists of interested sophomore Latin
students, who meet once a month after school. The ,senior
group, the Virgilian Forum, meets during class time, and is
open to third and fourth year students.
Both groups aim to gain a more thorough knowledge of
Roman life, customs, and languageg to understand better the
practical and cultural values of Latin, and to interest fellow
students therein.
Through their various projects, Latin students find the
realization of these aims fun and almost painless!
OFFICERS: Pauline Gravel, Presidentg Barbara Kennedy, Vice-
President, Miss M. Conroy, Adviser, Cathy Kalweit, Secretary.
ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
The Athletic Association, under the direction of Miss Constantini, endeavors to form
well-rounded personalities by teaching its members how to compete in games with a
true Christian spirit. Fall brings our newest outdoor sport, speedball, followed by basket-
ball and the aches and pains of calisthenics during the winter. Spring ushers in softball,
badminton, and tennis. Through these activities, we learn that co-operation, sportsman-
ship, and school spirit invariably lead to victory. The Faculty-Student game and Blue-
White games are just a few of the events on the AA calendar enjoyedathis year.

VARSITIES
Lauralton's athletic endeavors reach their peak in the field hockey and basketball
varsities. Both varsities follow a rigid schedule of bi-weekly practice at which time
various plays are taught to the players. Coupled with this newly-polished skill and team-
work, our varsities have matched their opponents' determination and ability. The Hockey
Varsity ended the season undefeated.
After a series of postponements following the numerous snow storms, the Basketball
Varsity continued this victorious spirit.
Urged on by the cheerleaders and students, Lauralton's Varsity activities typify the
truly Christian spirit of fair play.

FIELD DAY
Excitement and enthusiasm run high at Lauralton when the end of the year brings
our long-awaited "Field Dayfl
The dayis fun begins with an AA Assembly, where those girls who have earned
suficicient points are awarded varsity and tournament pins, emblems, letters, bars or stars.
Anyone could tell at a glance that Field Day is no ordinary day of school, for girls in
their gym suits are everywhere on the campus - eating their lunch of hot dogs, soda,
and ice creamg watching the traditional Blue-Wfhite softball gameg or participating them-
selves in games of their choice. The popularity of the seniors is evident, as yearbooks
are passed from hand to hand to be signed.
The grand finale of I.auralton's "fun day," the Virginia Reel, is held on the softball
field with everyone participating. Thus, Field Day climaxes the AA program.

SENIOR RETREAT
Senior Retreat, that long-awaited interval of quiet
contemplation, finally arrived. These were three days
of careful consideration of ourselves, our ambitions,
our obstacles. But above all they consisted of secluded
moments spent in listening to or talking with an
all-important Friend - God.
We will never again make a retreat so important,
so vital to ourselves and our future. Here were laid
the foundations of a lifetime. Now it is for us to
build on these foundations. For the future will be one
supported and strengthened by the decisions made
and the graces given in this retreat.
"Another bell???" asks Father Ansbro.

PARENTS' NIGHT
Fathers howled, we freshmen blushed and the jesters whole-
heartedly strove to make merry that Father-Daughter Night.
Who would have thought fathers were skilled in such arts as
potato balancing, clothes donning and fast eating?
At the Mother-Daughter Tea, our patient mothers weathered
the storm of the "good old days" as we attempted to recreate
such situations as "By the Sea" and "School Days."
With junior year came an opportunity for our parents and
teachers to meet professionally. Individual parent-teacher con-
ferences Were held and our parents discovered the whyis and
how's of our studies.
Senior Parent Night came as an appropriate conclusion to
our retreat. This occasion afforded our parents an insight into
our choice of vocation.
These yearly meetings have presented our parents the op-
portunities to analyze our assets and liabilities and to see us as
our teachers see us,

A TOUCH
OF FANTASY
"A Touch of Fantasy" was evident in Claven Audi-
torium on May 10, 1957, when the Class of 1958
held its Junior Prom. The decoration committee had
transformed the stage into a magic garden with a
large ice swan and a bubbling fountain surrounded
by spring flowers. The moon and the stars had come
inside for the evening and with the aid of the decora-
tion committee adorned the tables and curtains of the
auditorium. Hal Lindyis orchestra supplied the music.
Carol Ugolik and her escort, Jimmy Zelle, were
chosen to reign as King and Queen and were crowned
by Loretta Bielen, general chairman, and her escort,
Dick Corcoran. Members of the court were Judy

IN HOME-MAKING .
The Home-Making course is something new at Lauralton. Its purpose is to develop
the practical abilities of the girls so that they will be better equipped to fuliill their
future role of Christian Mother-Educators. Personality study, grooming, clothing con-
struction, home management, interior decorating and baby-sitting constitute the various
phases of the course.
Next year the advanced Home Economics course open to Sophomores will include
food preparation, nutrition, home nursing and consumer buying. In 1960 the course will
be an elective for upper classes.
Located in the Sacred Heart Building, the Home Economics rooms are attractively
furnished with blond oak sewing machines, cutting tables, chairs and cabinets. There is
a fitting room with three-way, full length mirrors. Here the future modistes put the
finishing touches to the garments which had become realities under their nimble lingers.
. . may all here please Thee by practicing every virtue, so that they may one day be welcomed
into Thy eternal home in heaven . .

Eight members of the Class of
'58 have the distinction of being
"the last of the boarders," a nos-
talgic little phrase which brings a
touch of sadness . . .
Since Lauralton opened its doors
in 1905, boarders have been an in-
tegral part of the school. It will in-
deed seem rather strange next year
when the corridors of the residence
hall no longer ring with the board-
ers' laughter, radios and general
clamor . . .
As we depart, we wish to say
"Thank you" to all who have helped
to make Lauralton a part-time home.
