Permit me then to offer this little thought taken from my Christmas Sermon of 1950: 'You can understand what anguish tore at the chaste heart of St. Joseph because he could not provide a better place for Jesus and Mary on this night of nights. The pure gold in Joseph's character had to be fire-tried in the crucible of mortification. He rang true. He is the simple saint of supreme humility, one whose stature continues to loom large over the lives of men of good will, by reason of his own life second only in time and tenor to that of the Hidden Life itself. Meek, lovable, pattern of the honest craftsman, his very self-abasement lifts him up to divine heights. Defender of the Holy Family, he now defends the Universal Church. Joseph, the just man, poor and having nothing, possesses all things. 'For he who is the least among you, he is the greatest.' QLuke 9:48J.'
