In a Hurry of book lists, supplies, and bus passes, school ofii-
cially opened -on September 12, fast followed by the Bishop's
Mass invoking the Holy Spirit for a successful year. Those
first lunch hours offered more than just a period for an ex-
change of summer doings: plans for freshmen initiation broke
into dire threats, then amused tolerance, from the recently
initiated upper-classmen. On September 23, Volume I: Num-
ber 1 of The VILLA proudly made its debut. Too, before the
month-end, the string section of the new orchestra gave a
short recital at the A.S.B. meeting.

To our Alma Mater,
As the june graduates prepare
to leave Villa Montemar, we
would say a world of thank-
you's to our faculty and school-
mates. For our shortcomings,
do cover them over with the
acknowledgement that the
united Class of '50 has been
loyal to the Academy and ever
interested in her members.
When September comes again,
look for the return of the Irish-
ers-no longer of the student
body, but as active members of
O.L.P.'s alumnae,

MRS. MARGUERITE KELLY
MATHER has introduced her
1950 Dodge, as well as the new
Christian Family Living class for
the freshmen. However, Mrs.
Mather is still best known for her
dramatics department and first-year
English.
Through three centuries the Sisters named
after God's carpenter at Nazareth, have
labored at their glorious work with and
for Christ. Founded in 1650 in Le Puy,
France, by Bishop Henri ide Maupas and
Jean P. Medaille, the new Order did not
escape the excesses of the French Revolu-
tion. However, when Robespierre's death
ended the Terror, the Lord raised up
Mother St. john Fontbonne, who had
been awaiting death in her prison cell,
to begin the great work of gathering
together her community. After this resto-r-
ation, the Congregation soon extended
its work to schools, hospitals, orphanages
wcharity to all.
Then, in 1836, Mother St. john sent to
America a band of six Sisters, who start-
ed their first province at Carondelet in
St. Louis. The rapid growth of the
Congregation has accounted for the addi-
tion of four provinces-St. Paul, Troy,
Los Angeles, Georgia-until in this tri-
centennial year, Reverend Mother Killian,
Superior General at Carondelet, can num-
ber 3600 Sisters who follow the evangeli-
cal counsels under the patronage of St.
Joseph.

that the year opened with the election of our president, Barbara
Romanoski. She and her aides saw us through all third-year activities.
The Miss O.L.P. Campaign, together with cake sales and plays,
swelled the class treasury to proportions sufficient to provide the tra-
ditional prom at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
During the weeks preceding Christmas, juniors worked hard and long
decorating the classroom in blue and gold snowflakes. Then, having
ave Danny Boy for St. Patrickls Day, Claimants on the scholastic

Bedeelked in Ties of Bright Re
the color so dear to our hearts, we, the class of '52, plunged into the new
school year, taking our place as the sophomores of O.L.P. Hearty picadors
and toreadors, our first move was to elect a matador and leader, Isabel
Trevino.
Unlike our mascot, the shy, quiet Ferdinand, we longed for action and excite-
ment. With our patron's feast day so near at hand, we could waste no time.
Soon we had completed the preparations, which resulted in a picnic by the
swimming pool, preceded by prayers in honor of St. Michael, our guide. We
also took an active part in the yearbook and Christmas box drives, winning
both.
During basketball season, our beloved Ferdinand was unearthed, dusted,
polished, and set up as a warning to all other classes. The cheering section,
spirits lifted by the arrival of beautiful, red and white beanies, built up lung
power, practiced cheers-and prayed. No wonder it was the sophomore team
that walked off with the intramural victory.
Lent came, as also did our successful bunco party for the Bishops' Relief Drive.
Our operetta, i'False Fernandof' used up the noon hours before we began
practice for Field Day. Then there was the senior dinner, the last token of
our esteem for our sister class.
Minutes respectfully submitted,

Although every subject holds interest for grade
eight, their favorite seems to be the course in
social studies. Adding religion to a combination
of geography, history, and civics, the Christian
Social Principles are brought into the year's work.

just ask us! Aside from our knowledge of the
parts of speech, we know the difference between
clauses and phrases and the different kinds of
sentences. This knowledge helps us, too, in dia-
gramming. The English we have learned this
year is invaluable in the mastery of our other
subjects.-Betty Tom.
