Who is Uscar?
. . . . . . youmayaslt:
Why, he's just a piece of wood.
Perhaps' he is, but ask him-
He'd say this if he could:
What am I?-there's the question.
A mascot. which is true:
But more than that-I'm more than wood.
I'm a Forty-Niner, too.
l'm the spirit of their studies:
A symbol of each game.
The Seniors, win or lose.
I'm smiling all the same.

THE ACADEMY OF OUR LADY OF PEACE
SAN DIEGO. CALIFORNIA
A wine-red pin and ring, the Fatima medal, a rosary-recall to the Seniors their years at the Academy.
. . . Oscar, also an emblem of the Forty-niners, changes his mood with the turning of the pages.
ear Lady of Fatima,
In the shadow of the Dove
This book is dedicate
To thee, to Him-to Love.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA J kl H d F M J H II
J S B L R H t
Our Lady, from the glory of heaven, loolcs upon her children. They
struggle in a world corroded with errors nurtured by those who
scorn her precious Child hanging on a cross. As an understanding
Mother, Mary regives at Fatima, a miraculous power: her rosary of
love, beaded with the tears ot her joys and sorrows, and bound
with her Son's cross.
Alive to their need tor God's Mother, Academy students, in the
theme ot Villa Montemar '49, enact her titles of praise with their
pledge to be stalwart daughters in this Age of Mary. Gratefully,
they reflect on their Faith and their homes, their education beside
a Mother holding close her lntant-King with an olive branch for
scepter-their own Lady of Peace.
E thusiasm and hard work merited a most successful year for the Seniors under the leadership
V President Marlyn Stewart lleftl. Secretary Susan Bierig, Treasurer Janet Cliff, and President Ma
J Hall.

Dear Diary
Dear Diary-it's fall again
And, as ever, School Began:
Farewell to beach, it's back to books:
Goodbye my gorgeous tan!
Dear Diary-I was brutal,
Ilnitiation Dayl
My poor freshman polished shoes.
The easy, brushless way.
Dear Diary-ah, poetry-
The noveI's at its peak:
l'm literary, can't you see?
Once again it is Book Week.
Dear Diary-it's Christmas:
With our play to Mary's Child
Prayers and carols through the night-
Our gift to an Infant mild.
Dear Diary-what a Ditch Day!
That snow was cold, I found.
When I first cried: l'm skiing!
I found me on the ground!
Dear Diary-Semester Tests-
I knew it all, I thought,
Until I saw that printed page,
And then I just forgot.
Dear Diary-the Senior Play-
At last the fateful night
To give Jane Eyre, with shaky knees
But eyes excitement-bright.
Dear Diary-Retreat is here:
With school work set apart.
Through love and prayer to Him
Again I give my heart.
Dear Diary-Recital Time-
My fingers seem to freeze:
Yet they can always find
Those ticklish little keys!
Dear Diary-l'm full of cokes,
I-Iotdogs, and basketball-
Field Day was fun-tomorrow, schooI7
llf I can move at allll
Dear Diary-the night has come.
Our uniforms disappear:
Out come dreamy dresses, flowers,
And music-Prom Time's here!
Dear Diary-today I say:
Ah world, I hold your key.
With cap and gown, a smile, a tear,
Goodbye, Academy!-

Book Week
Program Panel: Rev. John Aherne, O.S.A., Patricia
Carroll, James Franklin, Carolyn Mulholland, Mary
Scott, Leo Shaw, Patricia McCormick, and Norene
Mayfield.
For Sunday, November I3, Rev. John
Aherne, O.S.A., diocesan director ot
Catholic Book Week, composed and
directed a program depicting the
theme ot love as it is written into
great Catholic novels. For interpre-
tative readings, Father selected au-
thors who draw verbal portraits: not
ot sin o-nly, but ot the strength ot
contrition: not despair alone, but
hard-won hope: not hatred, but love
that is the basis ot lite. Regina
Coeli, St. Augustine's, Cathedral,
and Rosary high schools shared tal-
ents with the Academy to present
passages and poems sho-wing that:
"In the wedding of Christ and human
nature the Catholic writer finds the
pattern and symbol tor every tale of
love."
Students from Sainh and Our
Lady of Peace posed for the dis'
play photographs.
