The 1983-84 Homecoming week was a great success. As always Irish Spirit rose and proved that everyone attending AOL SI can be united by this special spirit.
Through Time
REMEMBER WHEN:
You were a Freshman, tentative and unsure. You were a sophomore. beginning to reach out and wonder.
You were a Junior, opening your wings to fly. You were a Senior, ready to leap at the first chance.
Even though we are all separated
by class.
We are united as one. by the Irish Spirit.
This book is designed to help us "Remember When." So when you open these pages let them lead you back To the memories of the Irish that we all cherish.

June 20, 1898 — Dedication of the Spalding building. Spalding was founded by John Lancaster Spalding.
However, the building is not named for John, it is named for Ben, his brother. The first football team was formed in 1903 The First SUMMA was issued in 1940 The first newspaper was called THE PURPLE AND WHITE, and began in 1903 The Annex to Spalding, The Schlarman Annex, was built in 1947.
The first Homecoming was in 1949

Spalding soccer players can look back on a tremendous 1983 season. With a final record of 15-30. the varsity team won a number of important victories (including two over Bergan.) After a terrific season ending with a Mid-State 8 Conference Championship, the team proceeded to Sectionals. There, the stupendous streak ended as they lost to the Springfield Southeast Spartans.

Intense Concentration
The 1983-84 Irish Volleyball team had an incredible season. Lead by Coach Cindy Clark the team captured the first Regional title in the history of Spalding volleyball. After being rated third out of four teams in the regional tournament and with no seniors on the team, the girls beat all odds with their amazing victory. The overall team record was 9-15. Sophomore Lisa Bourazak was selected for the second team of All-Conference players.

A salute to a young team that came through so very well. Unfortunately, the Irish only had the advantage of playing senior Sue Rashid for one year.
Teamwork in practice and matches brought a new team together. Workouts proved to be harder in anticipation than in reality.
After a year of gaining poise and experience and still having a good year, the Irish gals are looking forward to a very successful 1984 season.

Such Studly Seniors
The 1983 Cross Country had some very successful runners this year. Co-captains George McNeely and Steve Willard provided effective leadership and finished high in the M-S-8 Conference Meet.
Sophomores Jerry Gray. Chuck Donahue, and Jeff Boundy finished 5th. 15th. and 16th respectively in the Frosh-Soph Meet. Most successful was Karen Millar, a freshman, who finished 4th in the Girls Varsity Conference Meet. 5th in the District, and 31st in the Sectional.
For the home stretchRing Day
Juniors were initiated into the upper class on September 14, 1983, when Father Beebe blessed their class rings. The theme chosen by the Juniors to celebrate at St. Mary’s was "One in Christ” After Mass, Juniors celebrated their upperclassmenship at O’Leary’s Second Chance, where they danced all afternoon. Juniors will treasure their Class Rings always, not only because the day was a success, but also because the rings symbolizes high school and the Times of Our Hearts!
Lisa beams during the ceremony.Juniors Carry It Off In StyleBarbara Roth, a 1957 Academy graduate Remembers what the Academy was like when she attended:
Academy seniors did not have to wear uniforms during the last month of their Senior year.
The girls had to walk to classes in single file and were able to talk in low voices only. There was no talking during lent.
The Academy put on an operetta each spring with the girls (hair in pin curls) acting the male roles.
There were no male teachers for the Academy girls.
During October and May, a decade of the rosary was said over the loud speaker as you walked to your next class.
The students of the Academy were required to take two years of Latin? four years were offered.

Senior Student Senate
George Me Neely — President Kelly Higgins — Vice President Rita Kenny — Parliamentarian Steve Kernan — Senator Kevin Faley — Senator Mary Williams — Senator Stephanie Novy — Senator
Spalding's Senior Student Senate has a right to be proud of itself. During the summer before many of us were even thinking "school”, the Seniors were selling candy bars. Once school began many tedious hours were spent planning the homecoming float and dance. The Can Drive and Vice Versa were the next major events the Senate tackled. We should be very proud of the time and effort our Senior leaders put into our Senior Year.

The Junior section is dedicated in memory of Beth Jeanette Hop-wood. We may say of Beth’s life that it was short, if measured in earthly time-, but, as it is now measured in eternal time, we pray it is filled with everlasting happiness and bliss.
Our final tribute to Beth is that given by all who knew her — "She was everyone’s friend.’’

On February 24, 1984, we were visited by a very special priest. "Playboy Priest” Father Roberts has a special knack for speaking, as many of us found out. Definitely his presence was the highlight of our Retreat.
A final blessing.

Coach Bradle watches enthusiastically.
The 1983-84 boy’s varsity basketball team, coached by Ed Bradle, had a better season than expected. The area paper picked the team to finish second to last, but they finished in 5th place out of eight teams. The team had a great start by winning their first three games and the Canton Invitational Tournament. They also beat Central at home, which has not been done in ten years. The team was made up of 5 seniors, 5 juniors, and 3 sophomores. The 1983-84 season marked the end of coach Ed Bradle’s basketball coaching career.
The team expressed a wish to thank the student body for their support!

Molly” sings her heart out.On April 6. 7, and 8th. AOL SI presented this year’s Spring Musical, "Girl Crazy." the entire cast did an outstanding job under the direction of Miss Boehm and Mrs. Fredericksen.
"Girl Crazy” is a musical comedy by Guy Bolton. The main action takes place in the Wild West on Johnny’s Dude Ranch and continues with many musical numbers performed by the entier comapny.
It was an evening of "hootin’, hollerin’, and bronco-bustin'” for all who saw the show. "Girl Crazy” was certainly an unforgetable show for all who were involved.

Academy Spalding can be proud of the volunteer services that its Seniors participate in through Sociology classes. Many compliments have been received by the school concerning the program. Every Tuesday and Thursday over the year, Seniors have gone "into the Field” to assorted agencies, hospitals, grade schools and day care centers, to show the community that Spalding cares. Some of the services performed by Sociology students include, helping teachers, tutoring Crippled Children and aiding the mentally retarded. The elderly are visited at certain locations. The newest agency to receive Spalding Seniors’ help is the Crisis Nursery Center’s. Miss O’Flaherty’s hard work and outgoing attitude is instrumental to the Sociology program and the feeling of self-accomplishment that all the students experience in their weekly assignments.

The 1984 Boys Track Team began the process of returning Spalding to respectability in Track and Field. A good turn out in terms of numbers and a variety of skilled Athletes from other Athletic programs allowed for Team competition in all events. The total team concept was Adopted and used successfully by Coaches Larson, Bradle, and Burk. Hopefully the intensity and desire to succeed that was formed this year will continue to grow in the future.

Advantage Irish
Scott follows through.
The Fighting Irish returned this year to an uphill battle. Gerard Palmieri won the singles conference championship and qualified for State with a 2nd place finish at Sectionals. Dan Kenny and Scott Settelmeyer nearly joined him as they lost a close three set match in the semi-finals of sectionals. Scott Settelmyer earned his title as most valuable player. Playing ability, determination and spirit earned that title. Dean Mannelein joined the team this year and his progress has impressed even the opposition. He deserved Most Improved Player. Seniors Tim Drew and Dave Svymbersky added determination. Freshmen Pat Ritschel’s scrappiness earned him a varsity position and he proved to be a real asset to the team.
Our JV team proved eager and willing to work. Next year many of them will be moving up as four seniors will graduate.

Throughout our lives we will have many exciting moments, but one of the most special honors of life is to be a Senior.
In September it was so much fun to be the Upperclassof the Upperdass. On May 18 we walked together for the last time.
There is probably not one person who didn’t feel some sadness at leaving. but if it were possible would we do it again? No, because when we remember our memories they were only meant for the moment they were shared.

K)li lb ( s ;sSpringfield Trip
Springfield, IL. was the destination of Miss O’Fla-herty’s and Sr. Barbara’s American History classes in May. The trip is a Spalding Junior class tradition and was continued with style in 1984. Among the activities students participated in, were meeting local senators and representatives, sitting in on a session of Congress, touring The Old S New Capital, touring the Governor's mansion, meeting with Gov. Thompson and a course in lunch.Close-Up Program
In April of 1984, Miss O’Flaherty and 4 Juniors, Steve Willard, Stephanie Crawley, Paul Vargas, and Joline Gorman, travelled to Washington, D.C. as part of the Close-UP program. While there, they experienced their government first-hand through meeting with Congressmen, reporters, and lobbyist, by attending seminars on politics and by exploring the historical and cultural aspects of D.C.
209Senior Farewell
210Senior Picnic: Fun In The SunOn the first day of school, the office gave to me,
A locker with my very own key.
On the second day of school, my teacher gave to me.
Six heavy textbooks, five giant notebooks,
For my locker with my very own key.
On the third day of school, my mother gave to me,
A thermos full of chili, sweater when I'm chilly,
A mirror in which to see.
An extra pair of shoes, umbrella and a picture of my dog For my locker with my very own key.
On the fourth day of school, my coach gave to me.
Three pairs of running shorts, two school T-shirts,
A towel for P.E.
For my locker with my very own key.
On the fifth day of school, my girlfriend gave to me,
One framed portrait, one scented scarf,
A dozen brownies,
A Michael Jackson tape, two overdue books,
For my locker with my very own key.
On the sixth day of school, the band director gave to me,
One rented tuba, five pounds of music,
A cymbal for each knee.
Fifty Booster bars to sell for new uniforms.
For my locker with my very own key.
On the seventh day of school the science teacher gave to me, One microscope, one white coat,
A mouse that no longer breathed.
Eight restless "things” in eight glass vials.
For my locker with my very own key.
On the eighth day of school, my principal gave to me.
One ultimatum, I’ll quote him verbatim,
"Either clean it or turn in your key!”
On the ninth day of school, the custodian gave to me.
One metal dumpster, two incinerators,
A mask so I could breath,
Flow do kids survive four years.
With a locker with their very own key?213214216217218Autographs
