ESI 4- -4 SPALDING Since I898 when Bishop John Lancasier Spalding founded his high school for boys, Spalding Insfiiufe has been dedicafed fo ihe progres- sive Caiholic educafion of young men. This spirii of progress was firsf infroduced 'ro Spalding by +he bro+hers of ihe Socieiy of Mary, who were renowned for iheir disci- pline and high academic sfandards. In l933, fhe Benediciine Faihers ioolr over ihe adminisfrafion of 'I'he school, and under ihem Spalding made greai' educaiional sfrides. The Benedicfines began an exfensive building program which reached ifs fulfillmenf wiih fhe complefion of 'ihe Schlarman Annex which added 'lhirieen classrooms io The school. ln I950, 'lhe Clerics of Sain+ Via'I'or began 'leaching af Spalding. Tradiiionally a progressive order, fhe Viafofians iniroduced new ieach- ing mefhods and coniinued fhe various building proiecis. In l953, ihe gymnasium was complefed. Today, Spalding lnsiiiuie 'through a sfreamlined curriculum which includes four years of mafhemafics and 'lhree of science, and 'lhrough dedicaiion fo 'lhe ideals of Cafholic educafion has become one of 'l'he most highly regarded schools in fhe sfafe, providing o ground 'For ihe dreams and aspirations of 1-he young men passing 'through If 0 O . Joseph of Carondolei' arrived in Peoria for fhe purpose of sfarfing a selecf boarding and day school for young women. The Sisiers firsi' occupied a house on Jefferson Avenue. The nex+ locaiion occupied by fhe Sisfers was on Madison Avenue. If was here 'lhai ihe Sisfers esfablished fhe firsi' academy for fhe young ladies of Peoria. ln I874 fhe Academy moved 'lo iis presen+ sife near Sl. Mary's Caihedral. A+ ihai' fime +he enrollmeni consisied of 80 sfudenfs which has since increased 'l'o 800 siudenfs. The firsi' maior expansion occurred in I929 wifh fhe consfrucfion of fhe Edmund Dunne Hall, 'l'he gymna- sium, and 'lhe audiforium. More recenfly ofher changes and new confribuiions and addifions have been made af ihe Academy. Among 'ihem are iwo new science labs, remodeled foods and chemisfry labs. a complefely modernized language lab, a new business machines room, as well as a new library addifion.
