role of our Beeeed Mcthef.
Christmas time is synonymous with joy
and beautiful music, and our schools did
their share in fittingly participating in the
spirit of the season. Music and singing must
always have the qualties of ease and efforts
less art, but they presuppose hours of
supreme effort on the part of both teachers
and students.
Father Gilgallon's recital, Sister Angelas
band, and Sister Anne Loyola's Cantata
showed the finesse that can only be the
result of concentration and cooperation.

Memories are ma e of this.
Although the Academy and Spalding are two
separate schools, the many social activities ot the
year are shared. Games, dances, proms, and the CYC
contribute to this social lile, and are enjoyed by both
student bodies. From the Back To School Dance" in
September to the proms which climax our social
calendar, all our social affairs manifest our Catholic
ideal of a good time. Through these activities, stu-
dents make many lasting acquaintances and the
bond between the t'.-rc schools is strengthened.

The various activities of the schools
afforded the student an opportunity of
becoming better acquainted and of learn-

operation. They enlarged our realm of
activity and opened up new worlds of
experience along lines of our particular

Summa Co-Editors: Sherry Corriick Jim Ritt, El ew Gibbons,
and John Rynefl.
We fell file story of
fimes, p aces, evenis.
The l96U Summa Stall, composed ot man-
aging editors, business managers, and content
editors, under the capable guidance of Father
Novacek and Sister Mary Carmen, has en-
deavored to put out a praiseworthy publica-
tion.
The task ot publishing a yearbook was
decidedly new to us, but as the year pros
gressed, the allsimportant "dummy" gradually
began to take shape. There were ads to be
gotten, pictures to be taken, and layouts to
be decided upon, however, the teamwork and
cooperation ot each and every statf member
in carrying out the various assignments made
this issue ot the Summa possible..
The principle reason for this tireless Work
was to give you, the reader, a book of which
you can be justly proud, a book that will, in
years to come, provide a treasury of memories
of your l959-BU school year,

The Compact appears this year
quite Changed in appearance. The
smaller tour column paper makes lay-
out an easier task,
The statf is assisted by reporters
who gather news from the various
sources. Meetings are held once a
week and assignments are given out
by Sister Annette Marie, moderator.
Weekly work shops take the place ot
a formal journalism class.
We look to the Compact to give
us a review ot the happenings at AOL
and a preview ot events to come.

This year's Pontitical Crew had the honor
ot assisting our new bishop. These students
are chosen during their freshman year upon
the recommendations ot their pastors. They
must be completely dependable and Willing
to spend much ot their time practicing. The
Crew assists the Bishop at Midnight Mass,
Holy Week Services, Easter Mass, and the
annual ordination.
The Sodality of Cur Lady aims at pro-
curing the greatest possible holiness tor its
members and at extending to many others
their solutary influence for the good ot souls.
Accomplishing this through devotion and with
the protection ot Mary, it endeavors to make
the students, gathered together under Mary's
name, good Catholics, sincerely bent on
sanctifying themselves and their neighbors.

The lilting strains resounding through the halls are necessarily
traced to these groups. The chorus, ever-improving under the guid-
ance of Father Gilgallon, and the band, supervised by Sister Angela,
have given several sterling performances this year. Representing
Spalding at many events, they have brought credit to the school.
To achieve this success, members have assiduously applied both
time and effort. Not the least among the merits of such work are the
musical training and background gained. The blending of work,
pleasure, and talent is an experience to be cherished by the mem-
bers ot both groups.

This year, the Irish show promise ot having one
of the loest track teams in recent years. 'With a 2-2

more meets than they have in the last three years.
With Rich Waldschmidt and Bruce Morgan in the
weights, Pat Sullivan in the polevault, and fleet
iooted juniors Gene Gasper, Iim Tucker, and lim
l-laungs, the Irish thinlies will continuously better their
