OUR ALMA MATER
Pine trees grown so very tall,
Same in summer and in fall-
Sentinels, so proud and straight,
Guard well our beloved gate! -
A pleasant sight to us - well known -
A part of our dear second home. -
With you we have often shared
Our varied secrets and our cares.
You remember when we came -
Little Freshmen -all the same:
Bewildered, scared, prone to beware,
Yet Senior Hall to walk we,d dare! -
As Sophomores we were not shy,
And gaily watched each day go by.
For Latin even we were eagerg
The Ides of March we buried Caesar!
Soon Jolly juniors we became,
Saint Catherine,s Hall- our Hall of Fame. -
Our Senior year then loomed in sight,
VVe seemed to grow up overnight.
Pine trees swaying with the breeze,
Like old friends, our worries ease.
Seniors we are now at lastg
And Senior rings are coming fast. -
Finally for them we kneel,
And new, lasting joy we feel. -
Senior weekends, Christmas play,
Dances, concerts - happy days. -
And Class Night some few tears we shed,
VVhile Commencement loomed ahead.
B 0 9
Pine trees pointing toward the sky,
The time has come to say, "Cood-byel,'-
Dear Alma Mater and kind Friends,
God bless you ,til we meet again!

DEDICATION
O'OUR BELOVED PARENTS

ACADEMY OF SAINT JOSEPH
WE LOVINGLY - GRATEFULLY - HOPEFULLY

"'V0lzmtas Dei-Pax Nostra"
"THE WILL OF GOD-OUR PEACE"
THESE WORDS, from the biography of our Holy Father, Pope Iohn XXIII,
we have chosen as our motto. Inspiring and practical, "The Will of God,
Our Peacen, must be for us a lifetime guide and prayer, for it embodies the
fundamental principle of Christian living. It is the ever recurring motif
that runs through the sonata of a well-directed life. It has been the pre-
dominant theme in our varied and profitable years at Brentwood.
As Cardinal Roncalli and Patriarch of Venice, our present Pope often
repeated this aspiration. With the will of God ever in mind, he met and
efficiently handled difficult affairs of state as well as baffling political
problems. His strict adherence to God's will probably won for him the title,
"Optimistic Patriarchv, which his beloved Venetians fondly called him.
So we should permit the will of Cod to dominate our lives, "Thy Will
be donev must be not only our daily prayer, but also a motive power
guiding thoughts and actions. Doing God,s will means character building-
cultivation of God-given gifts. It implies developing the two-fold virtue of
charity and other necessary virtues, in short, doing the will of God is the
road to sanctification.
Following our God-Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier-will make our lives
truly successful and peaceful. He knows what is best for us.-His peace
must be the answer to the message each one of us sends to Him:
TRUSTING MY ALL TO YOUR TENDER CARE,
AND KNOWINC THAT YOU LOVE ME,
I,LL DO YOUR VVILL, WITH A HEART SINCERE,
I,LL BE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO BE!

A T THE PRESENT TIME, no doubt, our most cher-
ished possession is our Senior ring. For three years
we happily and longingly anticipated the joy of
wearing it - as our very own.
Modeled on the school seal, the ring presents
matter for thought, not only at graduation time,
but also through the years and decades that may
be ours. Beautiful and symbolic, it will remain a
reminder, an inspiration and even a consolation.
Unchanging and lasting, the gold circle suggests
eternity-and the Divinity of our Lord. In the
garnet we may read fidelity and loyalty to ideals,
as well as selfless love and devotion.
The lamp reminds us of faith, strong and endur-
ing, and the torch represents the unending search
for wisdom and knowledge. The closed book
implies the varied accumulation of learning and
culture, acquired during our high school years,
whereas the open book invites us to begin a new
record of accomplishment and service. In the olive
branch we see a symbol of peace -lasting peace
gained through adherence to ideals and inspiration.
And, finally, we may consider the laurel branch the
promise of eternal reward -the fruition of hopes
and endeavors, of effort' and achievement-the
never-ending happiness resulting from cooperation
with our Lord and His Blessed Mother, with
parents and teachers, with home and Alma Mater.

ITH THIS RING I thee wed, and I pledge to thee my trothf,
The theme of your 1960 yearbook prompts me to write that it matters not whether we
take these words in their literal couching of a marriage promise, or in their broader
interpretation of a sacred dedication of oneself.
The whole essence of ring symbolism lies in the idea of consecration-of binding
oneself-of willingness to give all of oneself to that which occasioned the acceptance of
the ring.
Each of you can see the implication of wearing it openly on your linger. You proudly
proclaim that you have contracted an engagement with your Alma Mater and that you
profess a loyal devotion to her. She is, in a sense, a cherished one, a loved oneg she
belongs to you and you to her.
May I prayerfully suggest to you, dear Seniors, that you endeavor always to be
true to the ideals embodied in each element of your ring's design! Read carefully the
explanation of these as they unfold in the pages of your book.
And, as succeeding years recruit new ring-wearers from the ranks of the under class
students, may God grant that in accepting the ring, each will accept her responsibility
to add her measure of fidelity to the century-old traditions of our beloved Academy and
its faculty, the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Reverend John E. Leonard Presides
Af Ring Ceremony
AN EVENT of great importance to the Graduates of 1960 took place in our Sacred Heart
Chapel on the evening of Octoher 1. Father Leonard presented her class ring to each
Senior. - He recalled the significance of the centuries-old custom of presenting a ring. As
in the case of the Prodigal Son, it implied that the person receiving the ring had reached
the age of maturity.
So Father reminded us that We uhave reached the threshold of Womanhoodvg soon
We must he ready to make decisions which will atlect and determine our future. He also
urged us to rememher our ohligations to our Holy Patron, Saint Joseph, to our parents and
teachers, and to all others who have contributed to our education.

HE Am' CLUB has had a very husy year. The National Art Convention at Thanksgiving hrought
Sisters from many Communities. Liturgical symbols decorated all available hulletin-hoards. And
liturgical silhouettes were placed by the Brentwood artists on the corridor Windows.
Posters for Retreat time, Saint Patrick's Day, Easter, and the month of our Lady also reminded
the passer-hy of the Various seasons. Perhaps the most attractive decorations were the original
creations at Christmas: multi-colored stained-glass cellophane uwindowsv, depicting the Birth, etc.
of our Lord.
