My dear Students, Let your light shine ... Appropriately hâve you dedicated the présent volume to Christ, the Light of the World. Christ, the source of ail light, works through parents and others to illumine the pathway of your life, to inflame the fire of your youthful spirit in shaping your future decisions, to enkindle the flame of truth, your torch in the material- istic world about you. Let your light shine ... In the words of our late beloved President John Fitzgerald Kennedy Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. He, the most youthful American President, the first of his Faith to serve in that capacity, held his torch high, and answered his own challenge by his magnanimous charity, his peacemaking policy, his humble acceptance of blâme. Only the assassiné bullet dimmed that light, now symbolized by the eternal flame that will continue to burn at the head of his grave. Let your light shine ... Your challenge may be phrased in different terms, but your responsibility is the same. Notre Dame has prepared you to hold your torch high to meet the challenge, to illumine the pathway before you and dispel the evils that would dim the Light. May Christ, the Light of the World, through the médiation of Mother Mary, inspire you to diffuse the light of your Faith to ail those with whom you corne in contact. Devotedly in Our Lady, ' 26
