Text from Pages 1 - 84 of the 1949 volume:
“
In this "Cheer" we have endeavored to garner each grain of time
cherished Academy. Before these golden minutes pass through the hourglass of life
into the Hnoiseless file" of Time, we reverently record them in this 1949 volumn
,at A.H.N.
For it was here that we, as tiny buds, first came under the unselfish guidance
of the Sisters. Through the years they were the devoted gardners who, after plant-
ing our seedling hearts at the feet of Our Lord and Lady, nourished our growth
Catholic truths and developed us into blossoming roses.
This, then is our treasuryg marked in time, of memories eternal.

One hundred years have gone since there passed from time into
eternity the saintly soul of Mother Marie Rose, the foundress of the
order of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. One hundred years-
more than man's life span, but only a minute's flash in God's eternal
scheme.
In this Year, the centennial anniversary of her call to everlasting
happiness, we pause in our daily tasks to pay tribute to her whose piety
and zeal lighted a tiny lamp that was to burn with ever increasing
brilliance down through the corridors of time.
A TRIIIBMITIE
We, the students at the Academy of the Holy Names are privileged
to pay homage to the Right Reverend Edmund F. Gibbons, D.D.
our beloved Bishop, friend of our Academy through the years.

"J.lVI.'s out!" Towards the end of each month
this cry can be heard echoing throughout the cor-
ridors of A.H.N. Yet only a few stop to realize the
expert timing which must be applied to make every
issue a success.
Weeks before the finished product is displayed
a layout must be drawn up. Staff members are then
notified and given their assignments. The columnists
choose their topics and inform the editor, to avoid
duplication. News writers are presented with topics
of current interest which must be reported in a con-
cise and accurate style. Each issue brings out hidden
talent by publishing the students' poems and short
stories.
After the deadline has been met, the layout is
checked, last minute news items placed, and proof
reading completed.
Now the literary part is over and the technical
machine is prepared, and then the action begins! As
2.11,
page after page is turned out the scene becomes an
assembly line with all members lending a helping
hand. First the pages must be separated and put in
order, next comes the stapler who passes the finished
job on to a counter, who checks the number for
each class, and finally the runner who dashes to and
fro bringing the bundles of news to eager subscribers.
The Whole cycle is complete and a harried staff
sits back to receive some well-earned praise. The race
with time is over, "J.M." has won again!

"An artist is the son of his time"-and all times,
here at A.H.N. If you climb the four flights to the
room under the skylights, you will see girls working
diligently to complete their courses, which include
everything from Egyptian design to modern art. It is
amazing to see the variety of projects these students
undertake. Some are collecting pictures for basic art,
while others are painting with oils, or working with
plastics or leathers.
The year's "rush hour" comes just before Mothers'
Day, as the girls prepare to display their work. Sister
Mary Margaret, the wonder of the art room, who
helps the girls in all these fields, is there to greet the
mothers and to beam with them over the accomplish-
ments of the class-the accomplishments which prove
that A.H.N. artists are students of the art of the ages.
Underclassmen snapped in art room as they devote their time to maste
ing several phases of art.

The cuckoo chirps, the bell buzzes, and time begins
ticking its way through another day in the music
room. In this department each-fleeting minute is used 5
every precious hour, treasured. Pupils tune their ears
to the "golden tongue of music" and train their
fingers to do its bidding in their daily practice periods.
This year monthly recitals and Junior and Senior
repertoires were crowned by a special music gradua-
tion.
In January fifty privileged musicians day-tripped to
New York where they heard a masterful rendition of
"La Boheme." Two months later twenty selected
members of the senior choral class performed for the
N.C.M.E.A. convention. ln connection with this
event, the senior choral group sang a Mass at the
Cathedral with five hundred other students. Through-
Graduates Mary Cay Conway and Dolores Hart complete their music

sented by the music department under Sister Mary of

SWIMMING
The time of the year has no significance to our I
mermaids, snapped here on their way to the pool, f
who enjoy their favorite sport in every season,
even winter-time.
"'Til we meet again" chorused the juniors last
year after they feted the '48 graduates who prom-
ised to remember them and that delightful day,
always.

"Five more minutes," warns the stagehand as A. H. N.'s thespians
don their masks and Wigs for another polished production. This year's
footlighted feature "The Imaginary Invalid" b'y Moliere was presented
by the Sodality. Weeks of strenuous rehearsing trained our able misses
to perform with precision and assurance so that the final presentation
procured raves from even the severest critic. This event culminated the
successful paint 'n powder season which spotlighted many talented

Our first homage is due the Infant of Prague and our saintly Intercessor Mother Marie
Rose. To Sister Superior, whose interest and cooperation were inspirational, and to all
the Sisters, who graciously endured the inconveniences which our comings and goings in-
flicted, we offer our humble thank-you.
We are also indebted to Mr. Frumkin and especially to Mr. Muller of Frumkin Studio
for their expert recording of our hours and days at Holy Names. It was through Miss
D. Barrachini's thoughtful suggestions and Mr. W. Van Nuis' timely advice that we
incurred our debt of gratitude to Progress Publishing Associates. Finally and fervently
do we extend our thanks to those generous people who through patronizing our venture
have made it possible for us to keep before our eyes as well as in our hearts, the time We
passed at A. H. N.
We have no other way of expressing our everlasting appreciation than to repeat our
simple thanks and to beg God's wondrous blessings on all our benefactors, for our hope
of repayment lies not in time but in eternity. So, with Francis Thompson, we
