fln Kensington, Maryland... orfll of Cuz' afion's Capiialmllle Qatlier 53O... Qn Eavencler Anal Qray Even before the sun brightens the eastern horizon each morning, everywhere in the areas north of our nation's capital, suburbanites hurrying over super-highways to a Pentagon desk, a Supreme Court bench, or the White House press room, pass us on our way toward the school on the hill. We travel by bus, by car pool and on foot down Strathmore Avenue and into the gateway that reads Academy of the Holy Cross. We come from towns to the no' 'i -Rockville and Gaithersburg, sections to the east, namely Garrett Park, Wheaton and Sil- ver Spring, from our homes to the south in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and the Dis- trict of Columbia. We proudly claim six- teen parishes, and our imposing school is within the bounds of Holy Redeemer. With the colorful and silent woods en- circling our rolling campus, and Kensing- ton acting as our host, there can be no better place, but here, for us to learn a philosophy of education that will help us to dominate the future in order that we may emerge as Catholic women filled with the spirit of love for Alma Mater . . . of love for God through Mary, His Sor- rowful Mother . . . of love of our neighbor through the teachings of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Hall, 1955. Spring, 1960. Decemlier, 1956.

Our Seal Maryland, My Maryland, is represented on our shield. The squares and the cross in the upper compart- ment are from the coat-of-arms of the Calvert and Crossland families. Calvert was the family name of the Lords of Baltimore who founded Maryland. Crossland was the family of the mother of the first Lord Baltimore. Occupying the central position on the seal are the cross of faith and the two anchors symbolizing hope, while a book represents knowledge and the Greek letters alpha and omega designate God as the beginning and the end of all things. The scroll at the base bears our school motto- SPES UNlCA -the Cross, our only hope. May we carry this emblem with us forever, learning greater wisdom with the years.
