guiding Lfights, Devoted Elriends, SISTER M. ROSE VITERBO, C.S.C. Principal, Religion IV Our present principal, Sister M. Rose Viterbo, joined us in the fall of l957. She has listened to our many problems, corrected our many mistakes, and shown interest in all our activities. Her major aim has been to give us a solid Catholic education while guiding us toward our eternal goal. Grateful hearts shall cherish her gift as the years go by. Here we see her issuing a tardy slip to Ann Fields of lO2. llfe Shine Ein Three years after the Civil War the Sisters of the Holy Cross came from Indiana and planted the seed that was to grow into our present Academy. They started a small school in the basement of St. Matthew's Church in Washington. By l878 they had moved into an impos- ing structure at l3l2 Massachusetts Ave. N. W. From then on the history of the Academy was closely allied with that of Catholic edu- cation in the United States. lt was visited by many distinguished personages, and into its portals was welcomed a little Italian nun who later became St. Francis Xavier Cabrini. R elleetecl Qlory By l9lO l3l2 became inadequate and a new Tudor-Gothic structure was erected on Upton Street in northwest Washington. From there young women were graduated for almost a half a century. Forty-six years later our present beautiful school opened its doors to the Class of l96O, Here on Strathmore Avenue in Kensington, Maryland we pause in the story of Holy Cross. Yes, pause--for as the educational demands of the nation's capital advance, so will Holy Cross advance in its unceasing determination to develop young women who will know how to conquer and dominate the future.
