Convents had been burned to the ground, but Phoenix-like, new cloisters in youthful freshness arose from the smouldering ashes. lr was a trying time calling for great-souled men and women, and they were found. The memory of such a one Mother Mary Teresa Gerhardinger, foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dameeeis in our hearts today. Valiant, courageous, indomitable, she stood where others would have fallen. With hands uplifted on the mountain she prayed, while force beat against force in the valley. The guerdon of those prayers was the founding of her order devoted to Catholic education. May her ideals become ours as we offer our final en- deavor to the Sisters who are so ably carrying out the designs of their holy foundress.
