Auatleirly lligh St-hool, as is the vase with all schools, has a future which may be lll0tll0t'I'0,

This recently organized, talented group ot'
the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade girl
singers add zest and enjoyment to Academy's
many activities. The complete girls chorus
numbers one hundred and thirty-two, however
there are sixty girls in the ninth grade division,
while the seventh and eighth grades add
seventy-two members. Rehearsal of the
seventh and eighth grade group takes place
fourth period and ninth grade practices lifth
period.
Among their many concerts, the chorus
presented on March sixth, at the evening
Parent and Teachers meeting, an excellent
program ol' international music which con-
sisted ol' the following: "The Ole Arks A
Nloverinf' "Dutch Lullaby," "Jingle Medley,"
"Somewhere a Child is Singing," which closely
tied in with Dr. .Heninburg's topic "Making
Une VVorld Work in America."
ln the April l5, Junior High Choral and
Instrumental Festival, the Chorus presented
one group of numbers alone, then combined
for two groups. One of which was accompanied
by the combined orchestras.
They added charm and gaiety to the two
Choral Concerts in December and May, and
also on May 22, the Roosevelt, Junior lligh
were privileged to have as their entertainment,
an inspiring concert by our Junior tlirls'
Chorus.

Drum and Bugle linrps
The Drum and Bugle Corps has long been
an important organization of Academy. It
was seven years after our school was opened
that the Drum and Bugle Corps made its lirst
appearance. Since then whenever and wherever
this popular unit has appeared, it has been
greeted with great applause.
Precision in carrying out drill formations,

mony of bugles and the rolling of drums can
be attributed to the direction of Miss Meyette,
in charge of marching, and Miss Schweitzer,
supervisor of music.
The girls maintain their interest in the
organization by drilling on instruments in the
auditorium or in marching tactics in the gym,
every first period. At. the first sign of spring,
practice is resumed in the stadium. Thirty
twirlers are also connected with the Corps.
This year, the fifty-seven members of the
Drum Corps presented many colorful and
attractive drill formations at the football games,
before the games began and during the halves.
These drills were led by drum-major, Lois
Nagle.
A dance sponsored by the Corps, and an
annual banquet are high-lights in the social
activities ol' the Drum and Bugle Corps.

Lihrar Staff
VVe students of Academy are fortunate in
having one of the linest library staffs in the
city. They, along with our etlieient librarian,
maintain an orderly, smooth running library.
The organization of the library stall, about
lifteen years ago, was initiated under the
guidance of Mrs. Mary Howe, librarian. lt
has grown from a small unknown organization
to one of great importance.
Miss Alariou llortner, in keeping with the
preceding tradition, not only conducts an
orderly, helpful library from which the entire
school beuelits, but also offers valuable infor-
mation to her student assistants which will
enable them to be self-suflieient in any library.
At the beginning of each semester, Miss
llortner selects capable students as new
monitors on the stall. During a training
period, the students are instructed as to the
arrangement of books, magazines and news-
papers, the placing of all new magazines and
newspapers, the checking and tiling of cards in
the card catalog, the decorating of the bulletin
board, the charging out of books, tl1e shelving
of books properly, the arranging of tables, cup-
boards, and racks neatly, and the taking care
of reference material.
The requirements for the stall' are high, as
they should be, because much responsibility
falls on these people. A student, must have a
I5 average and must show not only a realistic
interest in their work but also a seriousness ol'
purpose. They must be responsible, patient
and eflicieut. with a desire to bc of assistance to
others.
After their training period, they are set ou
their own and are of valuable assistance to
students and teachers in reference work. The
two members who are the most capable and
have had the most experience are chosen to
work after school as paid assistants.

The senate was established in N38 and
since then has grown to become one of the
customs of Academy's democratic system.
Semi-annually the group conducts one of the
school's traditional ceremonies, tlavel Day. On
these occasions the gavel, a symbol of authority,
is returned to the principal by the retiring
president who in turn presents it to the new
oliicer. The other new ollicers and senators are
then sworn into the organization. A person
outstanding in civic allairs is invited to talk
to the student body on some timely subject.
Gale lloss, acting mayor, and Sherman Hickey
were the last two to speak.
Ullieers for the Student Senate are elected
by the student body on the basis of their
scholastic standing and capability.
Several of the active committees which
help in school allairs include the assembly com-
mittee whose duty it is to select and plan the
school's yearly assembly programs, theiinancial
committee who undertake the various money
raising activities and campaigns sponsored by
the senate. The treasurer is the chairman ol'
the committee.
From this the committee sets up a budget
from which funds are supplied for special
Assembly programs, refreslnnents for incom-
ing students, awards, voting machines and
other wort h-while projects.
This year the senate has initiated an
awards program whereby outstanding students
from all the organizations ol' the Academy may
be elected by that particular group to receive
an award. This award is a key which has been
designed and ordered by a senate committee.

Girl Reserves
The Girl ltescrvcs as a part of a world-wide organi-
zation is by no means confined within the United
States. Headquarters have been established in Holland,
Great Britain, France, thc Philippine lslands as well
as in many other countries of the world. Any girl who
is willing and desirous "to Iind and give the best" is
eligible to join.
Within the last year thc Girl Reserves at Academy
has grown to 325 members. This large membership
has caused it to be divided into three separate units-
the 12th grade with its faculty advisor, Miss Stull, the
llth grade with Miss Bortner, and the l0th grade with
Mrs. Wardell. Thc meetings are held after school with
each group coming together separately on the same
night. Once a month all mcmbcrs assemble. Speakers
at these combined gatherings spoke on timely subjects
including A'Beauty llints" especially' pertaining to thc
hair and Ulioy M1-cts Girl." At a regular mccting
during March all the latest styles ami fashions in
womcn's and girl's wear. including sports wear. night
wear, afternoon ensembles, and formal evening wear,
were modeled by several Academy Girl lleservcs. A
Tea I'ollowed the Sl yle Show to which both Junior and
Senior Girl Reserves were invited. From the lectures
and slylc show thc girls derived many line ideas and
suggestions from which they could bcnelit.
The Girl liescrvcs arc continually olfering a varied
and extensive program of activities which call for a
number of ambitious and reliable girls. This year they
sponsored many drives such as clothing, tuberculosis,
and vvorld-fellowship. One of the more recent clothing
drives tFcbruary 20 to March 121, consisted of collect-
ing all types of light summer wear to be sent to thc
Philippine Islands. This effort to gather clothing
resulted from an urgent need of them from the Girl
Reserves Headquarters there. Tureen suppers held
at the Y. W. C. A. in honor of 12-2 girls graduating in
the mid-year and June senior classes were also a part
of their program of social activities. At Christmas
time many girls helped in the Seal Drive and also
helped to teach carols to the boys and girls of St.
.lost-ph's Home.
The annual Jamestown Conference, attended by
representatives of Girl lleserves throughout Pennsyl-
vania was held February 21, 22 and 23. lluth Levine,
Joanne Rarick, and .loan Oster represented Academy.
This year in all fairness service credits played a
major part in deciding whether a Girl llcscrvc could
attend the Semi-Annual Tri's. The Tri's are formal
dances sponsored by Academy in conjunction with
liast, Vincent, and Millcrcek Iligh School Girl lie-
scrves. These service credits could be achieved by
taking part in the many and varied projects along with
serving on committees.
Bernice Arnold qualified as the girl in the graduat-
ing class to have the honor of having her name engraved
on the Girl llcscrve "Character Cup." She was chosen
on the basis of character, leadership, and service as
displayed during her high school career.

Stage Crew
6'We do the dillicult immediately, the im-
possible lakes a lit tle longerf' This famous
boast, might well be the slogan of the Academy
stage crew.
lt is the duty of this crew to do whatever
work is necessary in connection with the as-
sembly programs of the school. ln this work
the boys make valuable contributions to the
school life, contributions which we fully ap-
preciated and contributions which enable the
students of the school to recall pleasant mem-
ories of school life in later years. They con-
tribute this service without pay.
The work of a stage hand necessarily in-
volves some hazards. lt is often necessary for
members of the crew to climb to the stage loft,
more than forty feet. above the stage, to hang
or adjust ropes and pulleys. This is only one
of the dangers of the work.
To reduce accidents to a minimum, the
caliber of the stage crew boys must be high.
They must use, initiative, care, resourcefulness,
speed, and courtesy. They must be reliable
and meet certain scholastic requirements or
they are not retained on the crew. To further
minimize the hazards, Rules of Safety and
Caution are impressed upon the boys. Though
the crew had been generally instructed in safety
methods, a serious injury to any of the members
while on duty, the first over a long period,
brought about the inauguration, this year, ofa
formal set of twenty-four safety rules. These
were formulated by the Academy director, Nr.
Bright, and generally adopted throughout the
School District of Erie, with slight changes.
ln addition, a candidate for the crew must now
have the signed consent of the parent.
The work of the crew is not limited to as-
semblies and the stage. They can also be
found at school dances, setting up public
address systems and chairs, at class plays,
handling lights, properties, scenery, curtains
and thousands of other tasks and at concerts of
Academy's musical groups. In addition they
handle the stage during any performances
whether by groups of the school or by outside
interests. ln short, they make the stage of
Academy High School, a center of school and
civic life.
This year the crew consisted of the follow-
ing members: Don Mattis, Don Hubert,
Norman Weed, Joe Woznicki, John Bannister,
Sam Bader, Bill Grumblatt, Danny Tacone,
Paul Moreau, Ernest Drams, Harry Glauser,
lid Jepson, and Charles Kugel. James Bier-
bauer and Leroy Erickson, acted as co-man-
agers for the first semester. Wayne Heidt
took over for -the second semester with Don
Mattis as temporary assistant. Mr. Bright,
acts as faculty advisor.
Hi-Y
The Hi-Y is an important organization
which does much to further the Christian
attitude and outlook ol' its members. The
Hi-Y sets as its aim the worthy purpose of
"creating, maintaining and extending through-
out the school and community high standards
of Christian character." Not content with a
purpose alone, the boys also have chosen the
platform ol' "clean speech, clean sports, clean
scholarship, and clean livingf,
The meeting which takes place at the
Y. M. C. A. every Tuesday night is well at-
tended by the members of this organization.
The evening includes a brief business meeting
followed by a program which consists mainly of
social events. The program committee is very
valuable in this respect as it plans the meetings
by engaging speakers acquainted with subjects
of interest to the boys. Mr. Graham, from the
Academy faculty, and Edward Duflin, Y. M.
C. A. representative, are on hand to serve as
advisors.
During the past year the first lli-Y basket-
ball team was organized. Bill lXlcCarthy, and
Jack Alctlill were chosen Co-Captains of the
two teams which completed a very successful
year. The first team consisted of the following
boys: Bill McCarthy, Jack McGill, Ted Miller,
Pete Anderson, Franny Dennison, and Bob
Larson, while the second team Was composed of:
Bob Laird, Bill Boniger, Jim McCarthy, Frank
Ptowalski, Frank Greiner, .lim Bogers, and
Doug Matson. The team played various local
outlits such as the "Aris Clicksl' and the
Academy High J-Y teams. A journey to Oil
City for two games with local squads was a
special feature of the basketball season. Tumb-
ling and Wrestling teams were organized during
the year to further supplement the sports
program.
Bob Laird, the guiding light of the Hi-Y
group, served both as Co-President and as
liditor for the lli-Y newspaper. The paper
is issued once a month. Containing news of
Academy Hi-Yers, it helps to stimulate interest
among the members.

Cheerleaders
The Academy Cheerleaders closed their
season this year in lille forin. Their ellorts.
as usual, have been an inspiration to the teams
and to the spectators as well.
If you think il is easy to be a cheerleader,
you are mistaken. It is a hard and exhausting
grind. At the beginning of the football season,
the squad must practice every afternoon, after
school, and what with a game every week and
a rally or two, sometimes two in one day, the
going is tough.
Tryouts for tl1e squad are held in the
spring, and in the fall the candidates are
chosen, not altogether on the basis of cheer-
leading ability, but for leadership, scholarship
and ambition as well.
Prior to the year l938, the cheering squads
of Academy were composed entirely of boys.
Since then, however, girls have participated
and many of them have proven themselves to
be welcome additions to the squad, not only
from the standpoint. of cheerleading ability,
but for inventiveness as well.
'lille cheerleaders contriie most ot' their
cheers themselves, in addition to songs and
other novelties which go to enliven games and
rallies. lfanyone happens to get an inspiration,
he relates same to Mr. Hale, the squad's faculty
advisor, who presents the idea to the rest of the
squad for approval.
A few years ago it. was decided that the
cheerleaders should have some kind of uniform,
and money was raised for it through student
contributions.
Audrey Meyers was kept on as Captain
again this year, no new election being held.
Members of the "first string" are: boys,
Dick Kennedy, Glen Smith, James Staaf,
tieorge VValt.ersg girls, Audrey Meyers, Audrey
Owens, Carol Rupp and Peggy lianigan.

Machine Shop
Our Machine Shop at Academy was estab-
lished in September, WI38. lt was first in-
structed by Mr. Graham on a half and half'
basis with Industrial Arts being taught during
the first, three periods in the morning and the
regular Trade Course during the remaining
three afternoon periods. lndustrial Arts is
taken one hour per day or five periods per
week while the Trade Course is taken three
hours per day or fifteen hours per week for two
years. A Trade Certificate is issued to the boy
who completes the necessary requirements.
The Trade Course was discontinued in 1910,
and a full time Industrial Arts program was
started due to a large demand and has con-
tinued ever since.
The type of work that the boys turn out
gives them a variety ofoperalions on the liathe,
Shaper, Milling Machine, Grinder, Drill Press,
etc. Accuracy is very important in producing
the various parts and in assembling the finished
product. Projects on a lathe consist of a Tack
llammer, Plumb Bob, Screw Driver, Center
Punch, Pin Punches, while on the Shaper
Parallel Clamps and Bench Yises are manu-
factured. Milling Machine work which is very
complicated when cutting Gears or making
flex Nuts requires an attaclnnent called an
Index flead. This attachment divides the
circzinnference of' the work into equal divisions,
such as a square head on a bolt, Hex Nuts,
Gears that have equal mnnber of teeth, alsow-
Cams, litc.
The machines are numbered, and each boy
is assigned a machine at, the beginning of' the
semester for which he is responsible throughout
the time he uses it. Safety as well as the proper
operation of his machine is stressed. livery
Machine is of' the most. modern type and
identically the same as used in Industrial
Xlachine Shops.

Junier liirl Reserves
The Junior High Girl Reserves is a young
club, organized last year. With our advisors,
Mrs. Lake, and Miss Schneider, we have done
service and social work of every kind.
One ol' the services the Junior lligh Girl
Reserves did last year was to make friendship
boxes. These boxes were packed with neces-
sities such as soap, socks, tooth brushes, and
other articles. Iiach girl also wrote a letter
which she put in her box, for the receiver in
another country: to read and answer. Another
very successl'nl service was the toy shop, held
at. the Y. W. C. A. All members of the .Iunior
Girl Reserves in the city gathered toys, old
and new, for children who were not as fortunate
as they. These toys were given away shortly
before Christmas to the families that needed
them.
Among our social functions was our dance,
The Snowball. which was held at the Y.W.C.A.
last January for Junior Girl Reserves and their
escorts. The chaperones for this dance were
our two advisors and Miss Rruninger, head ol'
102
the Y. VV. C. A. We have also had parties and
suppers where the girls have had good times.
The Junior Girl Reserve Council is an
organization ol' all Junior High Girl Reserves
in the city. It meets every month and is made
up of oflicers from the different clubs. We
discuss different problems and head many
projects. Each Junior Girl Reserve club tl'our
in liriej has a basketball team. We all practice
after school and meet our opponents on Satur-
days. The Junior Girl Reserve Council and
the .lunior Girl Reserves ol' Academy are
planning many more projects for the future.
