Ecnos D'UNE CLASSE DE CATECHISME Che-res enfants, Quand vous m'avez demande ce message pour votre livre-souvenir, je venais de vous expliquer la Communion des Saints et je me suis demande s'il n'y avait pas lieu d'etablir quelque relation entre cette derniere et celle qui devra unir les eleves de la classe 1949. Parmi vous il y en aura qui, favorisees de la fortune, se REJOUIRONTQ d'autres, victimes d'un sort moins heureux, SOUFFR1RONTg d'autres enfin, et ce sera le plus grand nombre, obligees de subvenir ai leurs besoins et cle pourvoir au bien-etre de ceux qui dependront d'elles, LUTTERONT et travailleront. Cest entendu qu'il n'y en aura pas qui seront rejetees de cette communion. Aux premieres cle se rappeler qu'elles tiennent tout de Dieu et qu'elles doivent aider les moins favorisees de leurs compagnes, surtout celles qui souffrent. Quant a ces dernieres, qu'elles ne perdent pas courage, mais qu'elles s'efforcent de tirer le meilleur parti de leurs souifrances et de leurs epreuvesg qu'elles n'oublient pas que Dieu les a placees dans la sociere comme des paratonnerres pour arreter sa juste colere par leurs prieres et leurs sacrifices. Pour ce qui est des troisiemes, qu'elles se rappellent constamment le Tu mangeras ton pain a la sueur de ton front. Qu'elles n'aient pas peur dans leurs besoins de recourir it leurs compagnes de la premiere Categorie, leur fournissant l'occasion de 'faire des heureux avec les biens qu'elles posseclerontg qu'elles soient bonnes pour celles qui souffrent et qu'elles encouragent celles qui comme elles travaillent et luttent. Quand arrive le 21, chacune est surprise de n'avoir pas eu le temps de s'ennuyer a l'Academie. . Le mois de fe-vrier donne a onze eleves l'occasion de participer at deux journees d'etude a Lowell. Elles sont si impregnees pat ces journees qu'au soit de leur retour elles presentent un petit programme de resume pour que toutes les etudiantes sachent aussi Vimpottance de l'amitie, de la vetite de l'ascese etudiante: cet effort de methode que nous inttoduirons dans nos vies pour gtandir. To us, the new Seniors, this last year would not only mean a fruitful harvest in knowledge but also in the field of sports. Basketballs were taken out of their summer hiding places and began immediately to be pushed through the baskets. October 12 was upon us before we realized it and rumors buzzed throughout the house that the Sophomores were very liable to kidnap the title of Championship from their elders. The juniors were easily defeated by the fleetness of their Senior opponents . . . but the major battle was still to come. Both the second and fourth year teams having been victorious in one game were entitled to the championship. The playoff started and before the end of the first half we were quite confident of victory. The whistle blew, the second half of the duel began. Contrary to our expectations the ball kept making baskets on the opposite side. The score began to even up and we, Seniors, began to sit up and take notice. The victory would be worth the fighting. At last after a basket where the score was one away from being tied, we man- aged to get the ball through our basket. The victory was ours! Our Lady had led her color-bearers cn to the victory we had craved since freshman days. .431 5 4 After the excitement of Field Day, thoughts turned to other sports. The Seniors, ever willing to try out something new, became interested in roller-skating. For a few days, one could see some of the more experienced teaching the ABC's of the two-step to the beginners. Eventually skinned knees disappeared and many girls could be seen grace- fully skating doubles around the recreation yards. Davy Jones, as usual, came to spend the month of November with us. As the days grew more chilly, many newcomers fell into the ranks of this popular sport. The activity of the game warmed cold limbs and gave increased energy to those who did not mind being pushed around. December lessened the enthusiasm for sports but not for the real Christmas spirit which had entered our hearts. The evenings were spent in happy companionship around the Crib, the tree, and the fireplace singing the songs that have been ringing through the ages since the First Christmas. Wlien we returned to school after the holidays, the arrival of the beautiful new ping-pong table re- conciled us to the fact that we were having a green winter. The table attracted many and balls were kept bouncing continually over its new shiny green surface. The mild winter did not give us the oppor- tunity of much outdoor activity, but the few times that the old northwind did blow our way, tobog- gans, sleds, and skis crowded the slope and roses bloomed in everybody's face. Although we stayed indoors often our eagerness for competition did not die out. A wealth of games, belonging to the recreation department, was discovered and we could always find a few interested Seniors playing carom or other popular table games. At last we greeted the spring of our graduation year. Tennis rackets that had been out of practice for long months were dusted off and began to hir flying balls back and forth over the net . . . more often over the fence. The bat was taken out and the softball was put into action, racing from the pitcher's hand, to the batter and then into far off corners of the yard. Many of us were content to just walk around the campus among the apple blossoms talking about I remember , and after graduation . And so, as we say farewell to our Academy let us remember as part of our training theisportsmanship we have learnt from our games and recreations. A travers la loupe, les plus petits meme reverent des formes . . . Voici un groupe vivant qui surgit . . . Ah! nous y sommes, c'est l'annee 1945. Nous apercevons quel- que 72 arrivantes essayant leurs premiers pas un peu timides, sur le chemin de la vie etudiante de l'Acad6mie. Bien vite leurs grandes soeurs mettent a l'aise par une bienveillante sympathie ces jouven- celles que nous sommes. Bientor, il nous semble que nous sommes ici depuis toujours. Le 12 octobre qu'on celebre le 10 cette annee, nous initie aux traditions sporrives de notre Alma Mater. Cest un bon as de fait dans Vamitie er nous l'accom lissons e grand coeur. Naturellement, nos gran es soeurs de la deuxieme annee sont victorieuses dans la joute de balle au panier. Nous nous reprendrons l'annee prochaine. Cette annee garde les vestiges de grands person- nages entre autres le docteur Deferrari et l'impera- trice Zita. Nous suivez-vous? Pressons un peu le pas! Cest le 11 novembreg nos talents sont mis at 1'epreuve dans la production musicale La Nielle des Blesf' Le temps s'ecoule et nous voici deja au mois de mars, au 30 mars, qui nous voir a Roxbury pour assister au magnifique spectacle de Pilate's Daughter. Une semaine plus tard, M. R. Viau et sa splendide Chorale nous servent un delicieux concert. ES Et si tot, le mois de mai. Nos grandes soeurs nous initient at la joie etudiante dans une Campagne de Joie chretiennef' Enfin, le 51 mai, nous cou- ronnons notre chere Maman du ciel. Cest une des dernieres etapes de notre premiere annee. Et voici que les empreintes commencent a se faire rares sur la route ecoliere. Ah! oui! c'est que nous deposons nos livres pour reprendre haleine, afin de continuer ensuite plus vaillamment. DEUXIEME ANN EE Septembre 1946, dit le poteau d'enseigne. Cette fois, le sentier ne sera pas si apre car notre route s'ameliore, elle nous devient familiere. Pour la majorite, la valeur n'attend pas la hauteur des coudees, mais ce n'est certainement pas notre taille qui nous empechera d'envisager les ptoblemes de la deuxieme annee. Nous le prouvons par notre victoire sur la premiere annee le 12 octobreg nous avons failli gagner la joute contre la quatrieme annee, mais nous avons cru sage de laisser les lauriers at nos ainees, car l'empreinte d'un pareil pas nous aurait peut-etre donne trop de confiance en nos capacites encore bourgeonnantes. Le 1er novembre. - Au-dessus du feuillage emerge le toit rouge d'une maisonnette, la petite Ecole Rouge! Que de doux souvenirs nous rap- pelle le rimbre de la petite cloche qui nous appelait toutes! nos jeunes voix s'y melant pour chanter In the Little Red Schoolhouse, enlin les gentilles poupees fabriquees par nos plus tendres efforts et qui devaient etre pour les nouvelles une marque de bienvenue. Ig.. Puis nous nous reposons un peu car maintenant le trajet est en autobus. Nous Hlons vers Worcester pour applaudir le Noel sur la Place, presente par les Compagnons de St-Laurent. Nous fetons notre Campagne de la Decouverte. Sous nos yeux, grandit une jeunesse appelee a un brillant avenir, car nous prenons toutes des resolutions de mieux nous connaitre les unes les autres. A un tournant du chemin, nous trouvons de la diversion dans la seance des graduees, Too Many Marys. Nous avons une petite part at cette seance et nous sommes fieres de nos jolies jupes longues aux couleurs pastelles. juin . . . et nous marchons plus solennellement car c'est la Fete-Dieu. Cest un grand honneur que cle former le cortege du Roi des rois. Une autre etape: c'est la graduation. Et voila que nous avons fini la moite de notre long voyage. TROISIEME ANNEE Redoublons cl'effort car la route pour le pays de la troisieme annee monte toujours. Cest une nou- velle Superieure, Soeur Marie-Magdalena, qui sera notre guide cette annee. A un tournant du chemin, s'eleve une croix: nous nous agenouillons, car c'est notre retraite annuelle prechee par un Pere Passioniste. Et vient le 12 octobre: encore une fois, nous cedons notre place a nos grandes soeurs dans la joute de balle au panier. Il faut bien faire honneur it notre titre de jolly juniors. Pour cette raison, nous portons le capitaine de la quatrieme annee, Agnes Hanks, en triomphe sur un trone majestu- eux fa notre avisj. Sur notre route, nous rencontrons plusieurs delas- sements, et encore plus, des surprises! A l'horizon traine un nuage sombre . . . Est-ce un mirage ou une hallucination? Mais non, c'est bien ga! une tribu d'Indiens nous encercle. La deuxieme annee nous entretient a la facon indienne et rien n'y manque, pas meme le feu de camp! Quelle est cette gentille demoiselle qui vient a notre rencontre, sinon notre compagne, Anna Keenan, qui vient d'etre couronnee Miss St. Ann. C'est la premiere it jouir de ce titre honori- lique dans l'histoire de l'Academie. Huit decembre . . . les voyage-uses s'arretent pour une soiree de Beano, Maitresses, grandes soeurs, petites soeurs, toutes ont joui de notre veillee au programme marial. Quelque semaines plus tard, la quatrieme annee nous donne le vrai esprit de Noel par une jolie representation. A leur tour, nos voisins du college de l'Assomption nous charment par une operette H, M. S. Pinaforef' Au loin s'eleve un mince brouillard qui devient bientet une fumee invitante. Autour d'un feu nous discutons quelques problemes . . . resultat: un film commente au point de vue moral, Jane Eyre. Mars: que se passe-t-il? Les habitants de cette jolie maisonnette sont elfrayes. Et avec raison, car elles sont at Mystery Island. Nous passons du mysterieux au comique dans la jolie saynete, Mademoiselle je Sais Tout. Nous avancons tou- jours en culture dans ce milieu choisi: les col- legiennes d'Anna Maria nous offrent un superbe recital. Nous fetons les noces d'argent de Soeur Superieure en lui offrant tous nos efforts dans l'operette Bernadette Le college de l'Assomption nous invite at une interpretation du Barbier de Seville et nous allons, toutes fieres, applaudir aux succes de nos confreres franco-americains. Encore une fois nous voici rendues au mois de juin. Mais ce n'est pas tout a fait un repos. Au contraire! Cest la marche et encore la marche! car les graduees sont devenues des militaires, ayant it leur tete le general Soldani. Elles ont recu leurs papiers d'enregistrement apres un examen tres rigoureux par deux medecins confreres. Mais il n'y a pas seulement du travail pour elles, car elles ont un U. S. O. ou elles viennent se divertir. A vrai dire, nous nous amusons autant qu'elles, de cette mysterieuse partie de plaisir preparee a nos ainees. Retournons au serieux, car ce sont maintenant des demoiselles graves qui defilent pour recevoir leur anneau de classe, du Maire Rose-Marie Vincelette et qui se reverent fierement de la toge et du beret: c'est l'investiture! QUATRIEME ANNEE Maintenant nos pas sont plus raffermis. Il le faut bien, car nous sommes les Seniors, et sur nos brisees, les plus jeunes marcheront . . . Nous commencons bien l'annee en initiant les nouvelles le 19 septembre. Les empreintes nous dirigent ensuite vers un lieu plus recueilli, car c'est le 22 septembre, ouver- ture de notre retraite. Le 6 octobre . . . jour solennel: la chorale execute une messe toute neuve et nous recevons Soeur Superieure pour lui offrir nos souhaits de bonne fete. C'est la premiere fois que nous mettons nos toges et berets comme graduees . . . flne thrill of fi lifetime! Nous- fetons Vempreinte ineffacable du pied de Christophe Colomb sur le sol d'Amerique. C'est le 12 octobre et pas mal different de ceux qui l'ont precede. Toutes portent une jolie jupe de la couleur de leur classe. La parade est un vrai coloris ambulant, et la roue dont les rayons convergeaient vers la Vierge a du faire plaisir a la cour Celeste! Arrive le moment Oil tout coeur bat plus vite: la joute de balle au panier! Nous remportons une victoire facile sur la troisieme annee, mais avec la deuxieme, nous ne cueillons pas nos lauriers sans une lutte inquietante! D'ici, nous faisons une petite randonnee en Chine l'aide d'un tapis magique car c'est le 24 octobre, dimanche des Missions. A notre retour c'est l'in- vestiture du Chef de justice, Anna Keenan. lci, les traces s'arretent au bord de la mer, car nous sommes invitees par la deuxieme annee a faire une petite excursion en bateau. L'evenement du jour: Sailor's Holiday, pour feter la Toussaint. On couronne aussi Miss St. Ann of 1949, et at son tour, Suzette, l'elue, est Here de couronner la statue de Sainte Anne. Le 11 novembre, nous executons la comedie Comme dans le Grand Monde. Oui, nous voulons laisser des exemples de serieux, mais cette fois encore, nous decidons de devenir comediennes pour une soiree de parler francais. Le Glee Club de nos petites soeurs de la troisieme annee fait ses debuts au beau soir de l'Immaculee Conception, et le succes leur sourit, nous jouissons toutes de cette soiree. Vingt et un decembre: nous laissons nos traces dans la neige immaculee. Nous donnons notre seance de Noel, Lights of Christmas et Noler joIi, car c'est a nous de voir it ce que nos soeurs cadettes aient le bel esprit de Noel. Apres un repos de deux semaines, nous revenons, pretes it marquer le pas jusqu'au jour tant desire de la graduation. Nous ne passons pas sans saluer Saint Valentin, en l'honneur de qui les externes de la troisieme annee nous preparent une agreable soiree de Quiz. Pour Ie 22 fevrier, nous fetons Washington par un banquet, confectionne de nos propres efforts. Et vient un grand pas dans notre vie etudiante: la retraite des graduees, prechee cette annee par le Pere Lavallee, o.m.i. Dans nos cerveaux enlievres senchevetraient des visions et des projets de toute espece, mais dans nos coeurs incerrains, se projette une lumiere pacifiante, et le calme trouve une place stable dans nos ames. Grand pas en effet! Le conge de sortie en une fm de semaine de mars est une halte bienfaisante pour maitresses et eleves menacees de la grippe. Notre Class Day nous delasse et nous en reve- nons ravies. Le 1er maifmois de Marie, et nous recevons de grand coeur nos grandes soeurs, les Amicalistes, qui avaient laisse leur empreinte dans nos vies. Comme il ne faut pas briser nos traditions, nous executons a la seance du 50 mai pour les veterans, Patriot Girl. Le 31 mai: nous nous reunissons pour couronner notre Mere du ciel . . . prelude des derniers jours . . . Quel cachet de solennite dans tous ces gestes que l'on accomplit pour une derniere fois . . . Et l'heure est venue de transmettre le flambeau en remetrant la toge et l'anneau it nos petites soeuts. Notre voyage est fini, nos derniers pas reverent un caractere de gravite inaccoutumee. Parfois, la route a ere un peu diflicile, mais tout de meme, nous avons fair bravement l'etape. C'est une grande oeuvre de parachevee. Maintenant, la route qui s'ouvre devant nous est encore plus large: c'est la route de la vie. Que nos traces guident toutes celles qui nous suivront! voila notre plus grand desir. 'July 23, 1959: - Two members of the staff of this paper were among the injured when a large airliner was forced down early today . . -Seattle Daily. We were taken immediately to a hospital where we were treated for our injuries which were not, however, serious. While there, we discovered that our attending nurses were two of our former classmates, ELIZABETH GALLAGHER and LOUISE DELISLE who literally kept us in stitches and told us that MARIALYSE ROY was also in the same hospital but in the pediatrics department. This chance meeting of old friends prompted us to continue our trip by auto so that we could renew our acquaintance with some of our other classmates in the towns and cities along the way. And so after those trying days in a hospital bed we resumed our journey eastward. While passing through Wyoming, we remembered that ELOISE GRENIER was one of the most prominent ranch owners in the area and when we stopped by for a short, visit we found, as her secretary, ALICE-MARIE LAVOIE who told us of a letter received recently from LORRAINE MENARD, who was making her second trip on a slow boat to China. From Wyoming we traveled onward to Iowa. There, in Des Moines, we attended a general assembly of the United Nations, where, as the presiding officer Secretary General, ROBERTE THIBAUDEAU, delivered the opening address. Among the many reporters and photographers at this assembly were the renowned SUZETTE LEMIEUX and PAULINE DAUDELIN of the Associated Press. Leaving Iowa for Chicago, our next stop was at a roadside restaurant owned by THERESA BOISVERT and in whose employ was Chef JEANNE ROUGEAU, famous for her Irish srews. While in Chicago, we visited the ultra-modern airport, designed by Architect TETRAULT and built under the critical eye of the nation's best woman engineer, JANET RICHARDS. Employed at this airport were those familiar air hostesses, THERESA TRUDEAU, CLAIRE GAUTHIER, and JEANNETTE NADEAU. From the airport we went to the University of Chicago where we found VIOLET POULIN teaching philosophy. In the science department, Professor GUTHREAU was conducting a research on the further uses of hydrogen peroxide. From the University we called on Professor MANNING at the Higgins Institute where she was giving a series of lectures on the Greeks, Ancient and Modern, Their Language and Customs. Also attending this lecture was housewife ELIZABETH DOWNEY who herself had recently written a supplement for Emily Post on How to Conduct a House Party. Betty told us that she had received a letter from ANN GOULD, stating that she and SHIRLEY GREENE, interior decorators, had just refinished the White House for the First Lady, the former RACHEL ARCHAMBAULT. Along with this information, she also told us of a concert given that evening by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with LORRAINE BUISSON, pianist, and JOYCE BOUDREAU, conductor. The following day, with our farewells said, we drove down Chicagds magnificent Lake Front, and took our last look at the colorful Buckingham Fountain and the majestic Wrigley Building, prides of a city we would never forget. We still had many long miles and hours to travel but when we thought of the joys of the first half of our trip, we drove eagerly onward. Akron, Ohio, was our next stop. Here we met perhaps the most successful of all our friends, PAULINE DAIGNAULT, now married to a prominent city ofiicial, was holding a tea that afternoon. Among the invited guests were MARY THERESA AVERY, VERNELLE THOMAS, and HELEN GIARD, all married and with growing families. Immediately afterwards, we proceeded to nearby Cleveland. The first thing to come to our eyesight was a HUGE building with an extra HUGE sign entitled, Reinikainen Furniture . We didn't think it possible that Theresa should be way out there, but through curiosity we inquired about it. Sure enough! It was none other than THERESA REINIKAINEN, formerly of St. Ann's Academy. Vice-president of this firm was MISS CECILE CROTEAU and upon further inquiry we discovered that a MISS ALICE LAVOIE, had recently been employed. That evening, on our way to a local theater we stopped at Beauregard's Sport Shop to ask if ESTELLE and her partner ROSEMARIE DENONCOURT wished to join us. Montgomery Clift was making a personal appearance that night and you can imagine our surprise when he was introduced by his Secretary-Manager, JOAN LAVALLEE. Also appearing in the show was the acclaimed queen of ball-room dancing, ANNA KEENAN. Going backstage after the show, we chatted for hours with Anna and Joan. In the course of our reminiscing, Anna told us that JEANNE BENOIT was a nurse at St. Vince-nt's Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. The next day, we bade good-bye to our friends and went on to New York. There, we spent a few days, catching up on shows, concerts and operas. We were very fortunate in getting tickets for vocalist DORIS PREFONTAINE's debut at Carnegie Hall. Her accompanist, DOLORES LETENDRE invited us to the Opera to see Manon starring DENISE LEMIEUX, soprano. At an art exhibit, the following day we saw GERTRUDE VALADE's latest painting, The Lady and the Watermelon. The model for this masterpiece had been ELOISE MILLETTE, On our way back to the hotel we were attracted by a window display at Nicole's the greatest name in fashions. With the purchase of a few dresses foremost in our minds, we entered the shop and were presented to the buyer of the concern, THELMA MAURICE. Thelma, in turn, introduced us to Nicole , ELIZABETH PIETROLUONGO. Our last day in New York, we attended a debate at Columbia University, given by the pupils of FRANCE SAVOIE's English Class. LENA BOLDUC, just back from Paris, had accepted a position to teach French at the University. In the exciting tales of her life on the continent she mentioned a reception given for the new ambassador to Spain, JACQUELINE LAREAU. Another bit of news from Paris was that WINIFRED CARTIER and JOAN BRIGHAM had been successful in establishing their new fashion salon. Back in Boston again two days later, we encountered SHIRLEY BROOKS, governess and LORRAINE JALBERT, music professor at the Conservatory. We invited them to our apartment and gave them an account of our trip. In two months time we had had the thrill of touring the country and had expe- rienced that special joy attached to meeting once again with old friends. .
