Mr. Cearhart coaching in his "No, 2" home.
Mr. Gearhart reclining in his "No. I" home.
The staff of the 1958 TATLER dedicates this
publication to Mr. Eldon Gearhart. XVC take
this means of showing our appreciation and
gratitude to a man who has devoted so largely
and unselfishly of his time and talents. Mr.
Gearhart has served not only as a teacher but
also as coach, class sponsor, and a friend to all
here at Abingdon High School. Again we say,
"Thank you, Mr. Gearhart, for your 'helping
hand, during our last four years."

Memoriam
To SALLY
The Frost Thar Killed The Other Flowers has
beautified the crimson rose. She wears a string
of frosted pearls-and in the wintry sunlight
glows-red and lovely, standing bravely in a
world that's cold and grey. The rose I thought
had breathed its last has lived to bloom another
day.
The frost of grief can strike the spirit,
blighting, freezing, withering-so that in the
heart bereft no hope unfolds and no birds sing.
But like the rose that has survived the touch of
winter's bitter breath-Love remains forever
fragrant: Love outlives the change called Death.
-Pfilierzzw' Strung
To JOHN
I can not say, and I will not say
That he is dead.-He is just away!
W'ith a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you-you, who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step and the glad return,7
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here.
-Iumfx Wbilwnzb Riley
To MARGARET
No, not cold beneath the grasses,
Not elosewalled within the tombg
Rather, in my Ifather's mansion,
Living in another room.
Living, like the one who loves me,
Like yon child with cheeks abloom,
Out of sight, at desk or school-book,
Busy in another room.
Nearer than the youth whom fortune
Beekons where the strange lands loomg
just behind the hanging curtain,
Serving in another room.
Shall I doubt my Father's mercy?
Shall I think of death as doom,
Or the stepping o'er the threshold
To a bigger, brighter room?
Shall I blame my Father! wisdom:
Shall I sit enswathed in gloom,
W'hen I know my love is happy,
Waiting in the other room?
-Rolfrrf l"n'i'n1ur1

turned to satin and lace and the junior-Senior
Prom. We chose the theme "Deep Sea Dream."
As the curtain fell on the third act, fourth

ended the year's activities.
The fourth act sees our cast as Seniors+our
long awaited dream had been fulfilled. Close

stage production, "Onions In The Stew." The
three act comedy proved to be a huge success.
During this act, our money-making projects were
in preparation for our trip. In the wee hours
of the morning on May 16, we had at last saved
enough money to start this trip. XVe journeyed
to Chicago and our memories of the play, "My
Fair Lady", the amusement park, the ballgame,
and shopping will never be forgotten.

COMPLIMFNTS OF
AMERICAN SANITARY
MFG. CO,
directed and helped us were Mr. Gearhart, Mrs.
Shipplett, Mrs. Breiner, Miss Ehrenhart, Mr.
Viar, Mrs. Cramer, Mr. Clark. Mrs. Wenzel-
mann, and Mr. Wimer. To these people, who
have been our teachers and friends, we are so
grateful. It has been with their helping hands
and assistance that we have had four "spectac-
ular" years.
Commencement, diplomas, and fifty-six capped
and gowned figures brought the curtain ringing
down on the final act of a "spectacular" which
lasted four years, but will last forever in the
hearts of its cast.

This year our football team had several boys placed on the
Little Six All-Star teams. jerry Severns and Rod Gustafson were
chosen for the first team, while Pete Carter and Tom Tucker
were chosen for the second team. john Sullivan received honor-
able mention. Other honors went to Pete Carter, Captain, jerry
Severns, Valuable Lineman, Rod Gustafson, Valuable Backg and
Tommy Courson and Terry Landon, Managers.
Abingdon High Schools football team turned a moderately
successful football season last fall by winning four games, tying
one, and losing three. Abingdon had a heavy line and a fast
backfield. Wlien they were playing their best, they were a tough
team to beat.
The Abingdon Junior Varsity gridiron eleven had a great year
being undefeated and untied. Witlu this kind of record, Abingdon
should have the players to fill in the places left by the Seniors,
thus heading toward a good season next year. This team was
under the direction of Coach Dean Hill.

ence and size of the other teams on the schedule.
Next years prospects look good, as there are many
returning players besides those coming up from
junior high.
One win and eight losses was the seasons rec-
ord. Our one win was over Bushnell while we
lost two each to Knoxille, Roseville, and Corpus
Christi, and one to Monmouth and R.O.V.A.

The first camera of the year 1957-1958 was focused on
the Senior Spectacular, "Onions in the Stew." The capti-
vating comedy depicts the island life of the MacDonald
family and their hilarious misfortunes with the plumbing,
the many unsuspected guests, and the yellow jackets. The
characters were all ably portrayed by various members of
the Senior Class. At the end of the play their troubles
were just beginning.
Under the expert direction
of Mrs. Wfenzelmann, this
year's Spectacular will forever T
linger in the hearts of all those
included in its production. .

The Junior Special was presented in color on November 22 on the
A.H.S. Sound Stage 9. This comedy centered around a teen-aged girl
who wished she were older. Her zany ideas and impractical jokes
provided many a laugh for the viewers, but much discomfort for her
beautiful older sister and her parents. Mr. jordan and Gram, with the
assistance l?j of Harriett the maid, finally helped bring Terry to her
senses and to the conclusion that it was better to be just herself than
to try to "dethrone" her sister, Phyllis.
Under the able direction of Mrs. Cramer, the play "Too Young, Too
Old" will long be remembered by all. As the juniors' first play, it was
a big success.

On the evening of April 26, the Seniors were
guests at the Junior Premier, a yearly spectacular
where "celebrities" and "little people" rub elbows.
The Premier was at the Abingdon Grade School all
purpose room. The theme was "Deep Sea Dream,"
which transformed the room into an underwater
fantasy-complete with mobile fish and sea-horses.
First event of the evening, all guests and faculty
were served a three-course banquet dinner. After
this everyone enjoyed dancing to the music which
was provided by the Rich Ring's Orchestra.
All too soon, the magic night of Prom had
passed, but with it, a wonderful memory of a per-
fect evening, "a soirde under the sea."
Dancing in underwater fantasy land.

Mr. Rich, Principal
Mrs. Dahler
From 1946 to 1950 when my
husband was Knox County
Sheriff, I was .1 deputy sheritl.
Mr. Murphy
I wrote the suing-"Will You
Love Nle in I.ife's Iivcning
As You I.ove Nle In l.ife's
Spring?" Copyrighted, 1925.
The late jimmy Xvalker, gave
expression to a similar thought
in his song entitled-"XX'ill
You Love Me in December as
You Do in May?
Mrs. Pence
The day honor students were
announced was my biggest
surprise, for I was it!
Miss Ray
I passed the county eighth
grade examinations with the
highest grade in my class.
P.S.-I was the only eighth
grader in our selmnl.
Mrs. White
I taught Dutch I.eonard's son
Mr. Whitmer
I fell asleep while the dentist
was drilling my teeth.
COMPLIMENTS OF
ERNEST ROBIZRSON
90
Although the junior high is set apart
from the high school in buildings, they
have joined us in enjoying many assem-
blies and activities this year.
The teachers have been a great help to
us and we would like to thank them for
the help they have given us throughout
the years.
