F ORE WORD 'In the bosom of the plow- land sleeps the promise of the wheat. As Kansas, the nation's breadbasket, supplies the wheat, and as the mills sup- ply flour which is sent to all parts of the world, so does Abilene high school, in the heart of Kansas, help to supply the world with the educated men and women needed to furnish the man- power in this complex world in which we live. just as the wheat is planted in the fall, and continues to grow through the winter and spring to finally reach the harvest stage in the early summer, so does a student enter high school to continue his learn- ing four years so that he is finally ready to graduate as a finished product. Therefore, the staff, has chosen the theme 'Wheat' to show the progress of the school year in this 1954 edition of the 'Orange and Brown. fm' QQQ Our dedicatee examines sample of this year' wheat crop. .4- AHS, THE MILL K1 S rv?

WE DEDICAT E- - the '54 'Orange and Brown' to Leonard M. Pike, vocational agriculture instructor, who has dedicated ten years of his life to AHS. On the job continuously, Mr. Pike devotes twelve months of every year to counseling and guiding 'his boys' wheth- er their problems concern their farming projects or I0l1Cl1 their personal lives. He is interested in both. Holding a BS degree in agriculture from Kansas State college, Mr. Pike is a member of Phi Delta Kap pa, honorary professional teacher's fratemity, Lambda Chi Alpha, social fraternity, and the State and National Vocational Agriculture teachers' associa- tion. Active in the civic and agricultural life of the community, Mr. Pike is a member of the Farm Bureau, USDA County council, and has been a member of the Central Kansas Free Fair board for ten years. Because he has set such a high standard of performance as an educator in AHS, we dedicate the yearbook to Leonard M. Pike. OF KNOWLEDGE Leonard M. Pike 1-df
