On February 20, sixty girls reported to the Eagle gymnasium for the first volley
ball workout of the season, under the direction of Miss Nina Woods, girls' atbletim
director. Among the sixty reporting were six veterans of the i932 team that went to
the finals against Albany last year. As volley ball is becoming more popular in
high school, the girls went to work in earnest, qualifying for positions on the team
Working out nearly every afternoon, the girls developed considerably, and won all
their practice games with Oplin, Potosi, Elmdale, Caps, Trent, and Wylie. Having
eliminations for the tournament volley ball team the first of April, Miss Woods
selected eight girls to represent Abilene in the District Meet. Her selection included
,luanita Petree, Kathlyn Roe, Esther Lee Clark, Violet Barley, Nettie Rae Bartlett
Mary Powell, Margrette Weed, and Dorothy Horton.

ing, April l5, to determine the championship of District 8. Albany, the two-yeal
defending champion, along with Abilene and Roby, proved to be the outstanding
contenders for the title. The veteran Abilene sextet of Kathlyn Roe, Juanita Petree.
Nettie Rae Bartlett, Violet Barley, Esther Lee Clark, and Mary Powell, with high
hopes of taking the cup, easily defeated Westbrook, their first opponents. Advancing
to the semi-finals, the Abilene representatives successfully disposed of one of the
favorites, Albany, l5-7, l5-8. ln the final contest, the Abilene sextet was defeated
by Roby, l5-2, l5-2.
