COACH IJFIWIQY A. IVIAYHICW
Dewey A. Mayhew, head athletic coach, served his position well during the past
year. Although his football squad was barely beaten out of a District Championship,
four of his men received All-District berths-the greatest number selected in any
school of the district. He sent a basketball team to the finals of the District Meet,
but probably his greatest achievement was his mile relay team, which broke the State
record, running the fastest time of any Texas high school team. This same team went
to the National Track and Field Meet at Chicago and took away first place honors.
His l33 track squad also won first place in the District Meet. During the five years
of his coaching career in Abilene High School, Mr. Mayhew has sent three football
teams to state, winning the championship twice, while his track squad has missed the
District Championship only once. All of these glories were brought about by the
untiring work of our beloved coach, D, A. Mayhew, a leader of men and a master
mind of sports.
Coach Mayhewls sole aim and purpose-to develop real fighting Eagles with
poise. courage, and spirit-was fully carried out, as he tried to develop good "win-
ning losersw as well as good winners. He firmly believes that it takes thc "ever-
lasting teamwork of every blooming soulw to win any kind of game. May his future
as an athletic coach be as successful as has been the past.
